This is such a great tour, and a fun way to learn about NYC. i am a local and always wondered what…read moretales and mayham lies beneath these buildings. The 2 hour walking tour of the hells kitchen area is a must book! I booked online directly with the website and paid about $35 per person. On a friday night at 8 pm, this was a great way to kick off halloween season with my friends. I had a few questions along the way, but owner Elise always answered my emails quickly. Meghan our tour guide was incredibly informed, animated and a sweetheart to spend the night with. she was engaging and really was into the stories and facts about this area of town. My suggestion? Meghan should have a microphone or something better to project her voice. she was great, but it was hard to hear at times due to the loudness of the city and her voice being on the lower side. I also think her candle lit lantern should be brighter or bigger. we had issues finding her, but to our surprise we were within a few feet from her. my favorite part of the tour and what made this unique were the candy that Meghan gave us in the beginning, and the sheet at the end with all of the facts and story names that we heard. i have been on so many tours and always have to rush taking notes or googling things as the tour happens that i end up loosing info or missing out on hearing items, but this printed out list of facts was a HUGE help.

Actually, "tour guide" brings to mind those boring school trips we all inevitably experienced at some point during childhood. She instead gifted us with a lively, fascinating journey, which was equal parts TED Talk, one-woman-show, & incredible (as well as incredibly macabre!) NYC history lesson! The whole experience was as wildly entertaining & informative as it was inspiring, even to this jaded, native New Yorker. Highly recommended!!!

On this walking tour, we will first meet in the West Village in front of the historic Village Vanguard, New York City’s oldest operating jazz club since 1935. We will give a brief history lesson about the world famous venue and its humble beginnings, where such greats as Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Mary Lou Williams, Keith Jarret, Stan Getz, and the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestra performed regularly. Next we will make a stop at one of the nearby Village coffee shops, cafes, or specialty shops. The highlight will take place during the final hour, where we will attend a live jazz concert (one 45-minute set) at one of the historic jazz clubs in Greenwich Village. The club will vary each walking tour depending on who will be performing that night; however rest assured, we will secure the best performances and spots available. Don’t be surprised if we get to see up close some of the greatest jazz musicians in the world and even occasionally the famous jazz musicians themselves. There may be a chance (no guarantees!) after the band’s set, to get a group photo-op with the band or performer, depending on the show chances can be good.  This will definitely be a truly unforgettable experience for all lovers of NYC history and jazz.

I'm going to try to entice you and not spoil the experience because it is thoughtfully curated and should be experienced live, in person. We started with one of the inspirations for Ghostbusters! Right off the bat, I was hooked as I love that movie and anything Dan Aykroyd. We learned about a Secret cave in Central Park, the iconic Dakota Building, we passed by Needle Park, where "Waiting for Mr Goodbar" was filmed in 1977 (RIP Diane Keaton!), and saw, among other sites, where James Baldwin lived and discussed art and films, like "The Exorcist" with Toni Morrison. That was a fascinating film review to read and learn about! You finish the tour where Edgar Allan Poe wrote and first published one of the most famous poems ever written, "The Raven", in The New York Evening Mirror on January 29, 1845. I had no idea I lived so near to such fascinating history! I'm grateful to B.O.T.D. for being such cool teachers! I am very much looking forward to taking additional tours with you to continue this unique journey of my complex and beloved City.

Our group booked the tour in honor of the Stonewall riots' 50th anniversary and it certainly didn't disappoint. We had a little trouble finding the meeting place and ended up a few minutes late, but luckily Joe waited for us, and also didn't mind taking extra time to answer questions or to let everyone take photos/videos before moving on to the next site. At the end of the tour, he gave out drinks coupons for one of the establishments, which we took advantage of to discuss what we learned. Hearing what the community went through in the 1960s and onwards in the face of such adversity, and how the seeds for the U.S. movement were planted was immensely fascinating and inspirational. For anyone looking to learn more about NYC's history and those who stood up to be able to openly be who they are, this tour is highly recommended!
