I didn't realize until I visited that the museum is located on land that was once the home to Cherokee Indians who were forced to leave in 1830 by the Indian Removal Act. Many ended up in Cherokee NC as they escaped by the Trail of Tears. I like that the museum is trying to reserve history. The museum wasn't large although I think I missed the permanent collection and just saw the current exhibition which was great. I enjoyed seeing the work differently looking at it from different angles. I wish I was given more guidance if more work was on the second floor. But I can check it out next time. The work presented does focus on the big issues like climate change; social justice; women's rights; and immigration. So if these types of issues are important to you, I think you will enjoy the art created by these artists.

It has well laid out and informative permanent exhibits, giving you a great overview of the history of the region without it being information overload. They have a fairly large theater that plays a film if you're not too interested in walking around the exhibits. It's fairly compact in size, so you can visit both floors quickly if you are in a rush, or take an hour or two depending on your level of interest. They have several rotating special exhibits, which I feel is essential to keeping things fresh and encourages repeat visits. On my visit, I found both the special exhibits on the Avengers and Lady Bird Johnson to be of excellent quality. However, there was a dinosaur exhibit which I felt was of poor quality and not very informative, and it seemed to be more of an area for younger kids to play rather than have visitors learn. They are setting up to have a Looney Toons special exhibit some time in the next year. There is a small gift and cafeteria area with vending machines on premises. They participate in the Bank of America Museums on Us program, providing complimentary visits to cardholders the first full weekend of every month. Overall, I'd rate the Upcountry History Museum a 4.5 stars out of 5 for a small city museum, but happy to round up since I enjoyed my visit and found it vastly superior to the Greenville County Museum of Art a few minutes away.

It's a bit tough to get your bearings at first since the property is really spread out, and requires quite a bit of driving to get from place to place, where first time visitors (like me) are sure to get lost along the way, even with a map of the property. I recommend starting your visit with the visitors center, carriage house, and geology museum, which are adjacent to the desert and Jurassic gardens. I tried to get intel on best places to see blooms at the visitors center, but staff weren't overly helpful in assisting where to explore, so I basically grabbed the map and drove off meandering around the back roads, winding up at the Hanover House (super friendly staff here) and the Caboose and President's gardens (some blooms in this area). Despite feeling a bit lost while exploring and encountering very few blooms, I did overall enjoy my visit to the South Carolina Botanical Gardens. I would rate it as a 3.5 out of 5 experience overall, as much of the land on property seemed not to serve much of a purpose, and you really have to spend time exploring (and getting lost) to find interesting blooms.

We were greeted at the entrance and they explained about standing 3 feet back from the art on the wall. I was given a sheet of paper explaining what exhibits were on each level. The works of art were displayed nicely with cards listening Artist, title and mediums used. Also on the walls were interesting facts about the featured artist and their works. The Andrew Wyeth pictures were a beautiful representation of his work spanning several decades of his life. There was also a wonderful exhibit of American artist Bob Ray's work. I was not familiar with his work but it was lovely and intriguing. There are elevators and stairs and ramps making transitions to each floor very easy for all. We went to the top floor and a wonderful gentleman who works there, John , told us quite a bit about the mixed media bird sculptures that were made by Grainger McKoy and and featured at the museum. Gravity defying and extremely detailed we were in awe. John was enthusiastic and knowledgeable and we had a wonderful time. There was a delightful group of young children on a school trip, that were at the museum and were incredibly well behaved. They were listening to their guide and I was smiling as they were told to discuss with their partners different aspects of the works..... their sweet voices sounded like music as I was behind a wall. The gift shop was small but lovely and I bought some cards and beautiful paper masks. There is no admission fee, so we took an envelope to send in well deserved donation.

We marveled at the displays, wondering how long they took to complete, how many people worked on the display etc. It's just so amazing to see that all the displays were made out of Lego pieces. There were some interactive displays which was nice for the kids since they were unable to touch most of the displays in the exhibit. There's a section where the kids can be master builders and time themselves on how quickly they can complete a miniature display, they ranged from easy, medium and difficult. At the end of the experience there was an entire city made of Legos, with loose lego pieces for the kids to be creative and make their own lego creations. It was a great finish to the experience. This exhibit is every lego master builders dream. It brought me back to my childhood!

This wasn't advertised anywhere.
