GENERAL/MUSIC: This was a lovely UMC nestled in a beautiful neighborhood. The facility is huge and gorgeous, with a beautifully wooden paneled high ceiling and exposed organ pipes. (And I only visited the sanctuary on campus!) I went for the 9:45 AM contemporary service, which meant updated music from The Faith We Sing (projected on TVs and overhead screens) and contemporary Christian hits from the radio. This congregation is led by a very talented tenor/pianist.
SERMON: I found the pastor's message to be really good here and well delivered. He's got a good sense of humor, balanced with heart and a bit of a history lesson when pairing with the scripture. He has a nice, slower way of speaking and also ASL signers for those who are harder of hearing. (As you walk in, sit in the front or on the left side while facing the pulpit to see the signers.)
WEBSITE: They have a great website with facilities maps and video podcasted sermons if you want to get a feel for the service or the church.
WHAT TO WEAR: As for attire, I would say most people are in something like business casual, and ladies seem to wear more skirts and dresses. (My Californian-self was sitting in the back with the other jeans-wearing visitors.)
PARKING: Though the place is huge with extensive parking lots, if you come on-time you may find yourself parking on the streets. This service is between two others, parking was just hard to find in general. There are police that help manage the situation. No one seemed to give me the stink-eye for having to park far away and therefore arrive late.
HOW I FIT IN: I may still look around for a jeans-wearing, 20s/30s-something crowd at the next UMC I visit, since that is the demographic I'm searching for. Here, I was lost in the post-benediction shuffle. I didn't see any post-service greeters or a place for coffee/fellowship. And so for me it lacked that smaller, more personable feel. read more
