Hiro Classic Okonomiyaki
Didi N.

Came here for lunch on a whim and it was fantastic! It was a bit crowded during lunch time and is a smaller space but we made it work! It's a self service station so you basically go up to the counter and order your food and pick it up when they call your name. It's a very modern Japanese diner type feel and I loved the decor in there. I was mostly ecstatic that they had my favorite Japanese street food, Okonomiyaki (savory pancake) as I cannot get it back home. They have other street food like beef bowls, katsu, katsu curry, etc and also drinks and sauces too. My husband and I had the following: Beef katsu curry - 8/10 - The beef was grilled well and we loved the smokey taste but it was just a tiny bit dry. The curry was legit!! We've been to Japan and had plenty of curry and the flavor was on point. It had a strong curry taste just how we like it and the potatoes and carrots were tender. I can't tell you how much we loved that curry! The meal came with rice and picked yellow radishes too. The radishes helped cut the heaviness of the curry with it's acidity. They give you a pretty huge portion as well too and we had plenty leftover to take home. Hiro classic okonomiyaki - 9/10 - It had a crepe base, yakisoba noodles, cabbage, leeks, bean sprouts, fried egg, furikake, seaweed flakes (aonoriko), tempura crisps, and house okonomi sauce, and Kewpie Japanese Mayo. I chose to have pork belly as my protein and when I tell you this was one of the most delicious things I've EVER eaten, I'm not lying! The portion size was huge and all the flavors were just WOW! The noodles were tender, the pork belly just melted in my mouth, and the combination of all the fresh, crisp veggies and sauces on top was chef's kiss. Everything worked so well together! I loved how they put tempura crisps on top because it needed that textural element. I loved how I could taste a little bit of acid as well because the okonomiyaki was pretty heavy but the acidity helps with it. Food didn't take long to come out and everything was fresh, hot, and steaming! Portion sizes were pretty huge and the price was worth it. We will definitely be coming back here again when we're in the area!

Really enjoyed the food at Chandon, it came out steaming hot. The service was self service at a kiosk which was pretty simple to use. The food was ready super quick after ordering which is appreciated. The ambiance is groovy here with low lighting. I got the Japanese grilled chicken curry with a spice level of high. Everything was spot on, wouldn't change a thing and ready to go back to try a different dish! Yum!

We just grabbed take out but will be back. The vibes seemed like a diner fun when we picked up. Food was ready and service was quick. We got the karaage rice bowl and the pork belly rice bowl. Huge portion sizes for the price and the pickled radish and slaw were a great addition to the already amazing flavor. The calpico was also a nice little sweet drink to top off a great dinner. Already recommended it to a few friends and want to go back asap!

The inside is so vibey.

I must say this place has become one of my favorite places to eat at after just one visit. The vibes are so good, with it being a repurposed diner into an Asian restaurant. Not much seating inside but it's manageable and there is also outdoor seating if the weather isn't bad. The parking is also on the smaller side but there is nearby street parking as well. The food was so good at a decent price and we didn't have to wait too long to boot. The service was kind and everyone seemed to have a good time, would highly recommend.

Uhhhh amazing!! This is definitely going to be my new Japanese spot. You walk in and order on a kiosk. Wait maybe 5 minutes and the food is out hot and ready to eat! This is an introverts dream! Don't have to talk to one person if you don't want to. Spicy Karaage rice: 5/5 Beef rice: 5/5 Strawberry matcha soda: 5/5 Usually when I order spicy food I don't assist will actually be spicy but their sauce definitely is! Everything is so flavorful and I'm still thinking about it ever since. The place has all kinda of figurines and anime vibes so if you love anime, you will enjoy looking around!

Situated inside of an old diner, Chanko offers traditional Japanese cuisine. They have an automated ordering by system. As soon as you walk in you'll be met with two screens to place your order. They provide pictures and printed descriptions of their sauces and seasonings. I ordered the katsu with curry and vegetables. It comes with three thick slices of daikon on top of a bed of rice. I haven't had katsu curry that good since I've moved. Seating can be limited as they do get a lot of foot traffic. There are additional seats outside. Beverages include Japanese sodas and regular fountain drinks. Once your order is ready, you go to the pick up window and grab necessary utensils.

What a find!! My adult kids have all bern and loved it so of course I had to go too! We have been fortunate enough to have Okonomiyaki in Hiroshima and Chanko's Hiroshima style okonomiyaki does not disappoint.

This might be known to others but definitely a new find for us. Efficient self-service model in an american dinner setting but serving japanese dishes, great food and more than AAAAMPLE but GENEROUUUUUUS portion. Hindi tinipid especially taking to consideration their prices for each dish. Suulit! We'll not shy away in recommending others to give this place a try if you're at the area. This is Chanko in Tampa. The beef with rice, chicken with noodles and some crispy stuff (dont know what it is called and lazy to look it up) were yum!

Ordered on Ubereats since the prices were reasonable and the portions looked big! Overall, I would give this place a 3.5 on food but rounded up because of the reasonable prices. - Hiro Classic with chicken katsu: genuinely enjoyed this dish. It was very different from what I was used to and it had great flavor. The chicken katsu was delicious. The slaw and vegetables helped cut through some of the grease. Very big portion which makes it worthwhile ** GET THIS IF YOU COME HERE - Pork Belly Rice: simple and straightforward! Lots of fat and very filling. I really liked the Chanko spicy sauce but the overall dish wasn't memorable - Chicken Karaage on the side: they gave you great portions here! It was crispy and I loved the spicy sauce with it!

There was very limited options when I visited. I don't know if it was the day but after seeing many reviews I was disappointed. The staff were very friendly and the wait time was short. Though my portion was good and the food tasted fine but I was expecting more. My friends' dishes did not turn out great. Their pork they ordered was very dry. I hope to have a different experience when I decided to visit again.

Yumz!

Absolutely incredible from start to finish! This place is so dope! Used to be an old diner & has been revamped! Ordering was easy peasy on the screens at the counter & our food came out so quickly! The chicken & rice with Chanko sauce was definitely some of the BEST I've had! Still dreaming about it & will be back when I visit friends in Tampa! Bonus little lore for you is there is a booth there where Elvis used to sit when he dined there! You absolutely have got to check this place out!

Oh my goodness. I came here to eat with my Dad (he found this spot!) and I am so impressed and pleased!! I created a vegan veg okonomiyaki with the customizations on the kiosk and my dad got the shrimp rice bowl. I will say, initially I was hesitant because I've made my own Japanese curry at home and I really didn't want this one to just be a copy and paste of the instant curry cubes (because it's not any more unique to me than making it at home) and I am so happy to report, the curry does have a typical Japanese curry flavor profile but it's definitely spiced and zhuzhed up and soo flavorful and spicy! basically, I could not replicate it. I was completely blown away by the vegan oko, it's HUGE (like probably going to take me 3-4 sittings to eat) and it's got crazy textures, cabbage, bean sprouts, noodles, tempura crunchies, the soft crepe, and of course the fried tofu. It comes out fast and hot off the grill. My dad said he liked his meal and would go back, so I would say overall, it was a 10/10 experience! Also I noticed a lot of cool people inside. I will be back to try the tofu katsu.

Really great concept, Charles's and self service, you order on the monitor and cashless payments. Grab your utensils, napkins and food as it comes out from pick up counter. You oh do clear your own table and throw out all your used containers, or can pack up left overs yourself. No waits very smooth, easy parking. Cute retro diner look with so many different Japanese / Asian drink options! Also lived the tofu and rice and their sauces! Kiddos loved the drinks and noodles and tofu! Would definitely recommend!

Cool decor and plenty of drink options.

Is this a place to dine with a party of 7?

Its pretty small tables, meant for a max of 4 per booth / table. There is one section on the right where you could all sit together, but if it's taken, you might have to sit at two separate tables.

When I first arrived the parking lot was packed, & I was worried there may be a bit of a wait, especially since this was a spur of the moment stop so I didn't have a reservation. My server was very friendly & went over the menu a bit with me since it was my first time here, & I decided on doing the AYCE dinner that way I could try a bit of everything. I got some hot green tea as well as a bottle of Peach Soju. I got a whole pot for the tea, & the soju was served in a small ice bucket, which I thought was cool because I love to keep mine chilled! I started off with a couple appetizers & some sashimi, the presentation was amazing & the freshness of the seafood delicious! My favorite was definitely the Blue Fin tuna, & apparently I wasn't the only fan because they had run out of almost all of it which was a little sad but just means I'll have to come again to try some more lol. The sushi rolls were fantastic & rolled perfectly, my eyes were definitely bigger than my stomach because I wanted to order 1 of every roll but after my fourth roll I could feel myself getting full & sadly had to stop there. I did order some fried oreos for dessert which just hit different when they are done in tempura batter, I love it! The only thing food wise that I could critique is definitely the miso soup, while it looks really good, it was bland & just tasted like warm water & tofu. The restaurant itself is styled really well, I remember when this location used to be a Red Lobster but looking at it now there's no way you could tell. Even though the booths are pretty close together they were surprisingly quite, I could barely hear anyone that was around me, it felt like I was in a coffee shop instead of an actual restaurant.

The two not so favorite dishes for me were the fried rice topped with fried chicken. While chicken was very tasty the rice was extremely basic. Could have used eggs or other ingredients to elevate this dish. Also the Volcano roll was extremely disappointing. Normally the volcano topping is cooked or (torched) and this topping was cold and very unappetizing. Would not recommend this roll. Overall this place is a hit or miss. Service for our large party wasn't bad and everything came out pretty quickly!

My least favorite was the duck, I wished they had replaced that one with a seared wagyu dish, especially for the price we paid I was kind of expecting something like that. Also, was a bit disappointed we were not served tuna belly. I'm not a huge fan of tuna because there isn't much flavor.
