Toys N Things is a great little independent toyshop on the Wellfield Road. It's not quite as big as…read moreits competitor, Stepping Stones, a few doors down, which acts as a distribution centre as well as a retail outlet, but Toys N Things is, in many ways, just as good. It seems that they both share a similar ethos, with Toys N Things supplying educational games and toys for children of all ages, just like its counterpart. Stepping Stones is not as colourful as Toys N Things, but that's mainly due to the fact that the latter cashes in on all of the ultra-popular big brand names like Barbie and does a fine line in fancy dress with all of the usual suspects covered. It is also a joke and novelty shop that supplies fireworks. I'm not so keen on fireworks but I am rather partial to whoopee cushions and things of that ilk... perhaps with exception of stink bombs and bangers. Toys N Things is not a Stepping Stones copycat. It is very much doing its own thing. I think the latter is more commendable in many respects, but there is definitely a place for what Toys N Things is doing.

Great to see that Wellfield Road has such a good independent Toy Store! The toys on offer are…read moregenerally rather modern, and most are brands such as Barbie, Playmobile, and Doctor Who are on offer. What I really like about this place is that the prices range from the very cheap (ideal for pocket money) to the more expensive, so if you need to buy a toy for someone, you're bound to find something suitable. I think the items in this store would mainly be suitable for 3-12 year olds, however older children (and adults) may enjoy the board games on offer. They do have a small fancy dress selection (mainly wigs), but unless it's an emergency and you need something quick, I would recommend you go to one of Cardiff's excellent fancy dress stores instead!

Cardiff model-makers will already be very familiar with Antics, as it's a shop that's packed to the…read morerafters with model planes, boats, cars, railways, and all the accessories that go with them. They have diecast and display model aeroplanes from various top brands; war gaming and figures; military models; Scalextric kits and cars; steam powered models; radio controlled systems; and maritime models - amongst other products. Then once you're set up, they also have lots of the little extras you might be looking for. If you're after some landscaping materials for your model railway, for example, you can pick up individual items such as miniature trees or whole kits with a variety of scenic materials to create a realistic-looking environment. Usually populated mainly by men and boys, this is a great shop for any keen model makers.

First off - great name for a hobby shop. Second - I can't believe their ranges of radio controlled…read moremodel cars, boats, planes, toys, vehicles, plastic kits and model railways. Antics is the stuff little boys' dreams are made of, and its location on the castle end of St Mary's Street means it's perfectly positioned to catch the hordes of tourists in that area of town. It packs a lot of stock into such a modest shop - the list is seemingly endless: flying models, military models and figures, Wargaming figures, Scalextric (my personal favourite), educational kids, books and DVDs. If you can't find what you're looking for - which would be a stretch of the imagination - Antics has an online shop with more than 10,000 models in stock.

Oh, Games Workshop…read more This shop is a gaming and hobby shop for all those people obsessed with fantasy and role playing, in all its guises. You can makes your own figures, paint them and create scenery. You can buy books on how to do just this, or just a good old plain fantasy book. But this shop is also so very much more. In the centre of the floor are tables where epic battles are fought and lost/won, where heroic deeds go on a few metre from the pavement. Oh, Games Workshop. How you suck in the lives of teenagers (and, admittedly, lots of adults too) and chew them up. Hours of role playing later, the little tykes will stagger out into the harsh sunlight and feel a staggering loss at there being no orcs or wizards on the high street. This is a shop and social club for all those people with a sense of miniature adventure.

Games Workshop offers a wide selection of figurines, accessories, and books for games of all sorts, including Warhammer, Lord of the Rings, and other specialist games. The range of stock here is impressive, and I'm sure if you're a gaming enthusiast, you'll be able to find what you're looking for.

There aren't many toy shops in the city centre since Toys 'r' Us moved so I am quite glad that The…read moreEntertainer is still here because it makes Christmas shopping that much easier. The Entertainer has a good range of toy from pre-school up, including lots of board games, lego and more specialist toys like Hornby trains and Scalextric's. The people who work here really know their stuff too. I was totally lost about what to get a four year old, and they were more than happy to give me a few suggestions in different price ranges. I really like that you can see what your buying here and get a feel for it. Its a really good place to shop, I only wish it was even bigger!

Ahhhh, The Entertainer…read more Do you remember that scene from Home Alone 2: Lost In New York when the kid goes to that really boring looking toy store, and is given the chance to choose any toy he wants from that place? I still haven't gotten over the fact that the stupid brat picked a turtle dove. How is that even a toy? How is it suitable for any kind of fun at all? I always assumed that whilst the part of the toystore we saw was pretty lame, the part out of shot that the Macaulay Culkin could see was even worse. Probably filled with Transformers knock-offs and those really racist black dolls that my best friend's nan used to collect and saw nothing wrong with. That's why he picked the turtle dove; because it was either that, or be labelled a horrible little racist. ... the point of that is, The Entertainer is like someone watched that scene over and over and over, Clockwork Orange style, and then at the end went "I'mma make the best toy store ever, just to make extra sure that no poor child has to play with a turtle dove ever again!" The Entertainer is that store.
