Water heater installed May 2024 by CHAMPION--since that time I have had to call them back twice. Each time I get conflicting statements on the problem. This time I refused to pay the $90.00 house call--only to get a call from the supervisor to explain to me --how a water heater works--I have to adjust the temp dial according to my needs--like a thermostat-regulating your room temp. Sometimes you want the water hotter than other times. I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF SUCH A THING-- DO NOT EVEN CONSIDER CHAMPION PLUMBING--the last plumber didn't know which way to turn the temp dial, admitted that he gets confused with his directions and counterclockwise/clockwise situations. Got call and text message from Champion Plumbing almost immediately saying that Meghan was on her way to pick up new water heater at our local Home Depot store and to install it at our home. Champion Plumbing deserves 5 stars! I cold called them on a Saturday morning when I had a backed up sewer. I knew nothing about them except they were a 24 hour service. They were responsive and had a plumber at my house before noon. He diagnosed the problem as requiring a trench to be dug and pipe repair. Okie-1 was dispatched on an emergency basis on Sunday to flag the yard and Champion's crew arrived on Monday to begin the work. Service was restored on Tuesday. I was very pleased with the professionalism and problem solving of all Champion employees. They were prompt and polite and I would be pleased to use them in the future. read more

My previous experience with a home repair contractor was horrendous - I wrote a scathing review for that vendor on Yelp. So to experience the exact opposite of that with Champion Plumbing reinstates my faith in knowing there are still decent, professional and reasonably priced contractors in the Twin Cities. I would not hesitate to recommend Champion to any of my neighbors. Darnell was on time, courteous, and professional from beginning to end - he answered all of my questions, pointed out FYI's so I was aware of certain things about my new water heater, and provided a clear overview of Champion's MVP program. I'm sure these guys are scheduled for multiple appointments each day but Darnell never seemed rushed, I felt like he truly wanted to do a quality job, made sure everything checked out, and confirmed that I was satisfied with the installation. Customer service nightmare! Called two weeks ago to schedule a reconnect after we moved our gas meter inside to out. Refused to come give any quote prior to the day of. Once here, now without any gas to our house, he says the bill was $2,068! But it gets better we can't reconnect until after a plumbing inspection which was over a week plus out! Wanting to leave us without gas for heating or hot water. He also said he needed to rework all the lines and it would be six plus hours of labor. Thankfully, we called another hvac company who was able to be here within 1.5 hours to reconnect our line for $1,200 and did all the work in two hours! Called Home Depot because of their same day installation promise. While due to weather and the impending New Year's holiday it ended up taking two days, they sent RC out to my house today and he installed it so quickly I was convinced he had just painted my old one while I wasn't looking. The install price, even with whatever Home Depot takes as a cut, was very good. I had two requirements for the job. Don't blow up my house, and make my water hot again. It's only been two hours since he left, but so far RC is two for two. Doing such great work on the final day of the year, he deserves a fat raise and the employee of the month award. read more

Stay away from these guys!!! We needed a water heater replaced and Home Depot sent a guy out from Champion that told me my 9 yr old home that I just bought/ had inspected 2 years ago needed all of my venting completely redone due to state regulations- doubling the price I was initially quoted. I looked up reviews and apparently, this isn't the first time they tried to pull this bs on someone. Looked up the regulation (which took a bit since he didn't give me the exact section) and it looks like he was citing a regulation citing large commercial buildings- not residential according to section C. I'm a 50yr old retired disabled vet and my wife is a kindergarten teacher currently undergoing multiple surgeries for cancer but I guess since we live in a nice home they guy figured we were wealthy or something (we aren't) and would be an easy mark. Seriously pissed me off- especially considering this went down the Friday before memorial day. I hope karma kicks these guys in the face someday-- True scumbags IMHO. Looked up other local plumbers through the NextDoor app and had a new water heater installed for the exact same price I was initially quoted from home depot. RESPONDING TO THE COMMENT BELOW: I could easily deal with the minor charge of replacing the PVC pipe (which was replaced btw)- Your guy told me he had to not only replace the pipes but completely revent my plumbing into the next room over and cut through my ceiling/walls because my pipes were supposedly too close together (costing an extra $1200) and that I would also have to hire a separate person to patch everything up afterward (more $$$). I certainly don't claim to be an expert but this obviously sounded like BS since my house was built 9 years ago & inspected 2 years ago. This subcontractor installed Rheem water heater that was purchased through Home Depot. They efficiently and clearly communicated my installation options and costs. They arranged the installation of my new water heater and the removal of my old water heater. The two plumbers were knowledgeable and personable. They completed the installation within 2 hours at the cost estimated ($550 plus the cost of my water heater). This installation cost included the city permit and for taking away my old water heater. (My house is only 20 years old so my ventilation, gas line and water shut off were all up to code so no extra plumbing costs were required.) This would have been a 5 star review if my installation window did not have to be 4+ hours. I was called with about 15 minutes notice, about 2.5 hours into this window of time. They were also considerate enough to ask if I had any other plumbing needs. Some of my other bids wanted to charge more to install a 50 gallon tank instead of a 40 gallon tank, even though the height was similar. My 50 gallon from Home Depot was only $50 more than a similar 40 gallon tank. My other bids wanted $140+ more for the 50 gallon versus the 40 gallon equivalent. Overall this is what led my to Home Depot and Champion Plumbing. read more

I was very disappointed in my service. I normally use a different company but thought I would give them a try to help me with slow pipes and a leak in my upstairs bathroom. My clogged toilet is still clogged but has $241 worth of new innards. My toilet upstairs showed there could be a leak where the top and bottom connect. While he was tightening the toilet he cracked the top and water went everywhere. He came down and said that he would sell me a toilet for $200 bc "it was partially my fault". Who else did that? So, I am $400 in and one of my toilets works properly bc its brand new. I called the next day and she said she could send someone out for another Service call fee. I will never use them again. Now I have to pay someone else to help fix my downstairs toilet. read more

They installed a water heater I purchased from Home Depot. The plumber that did the installation told me that I needed a new ball cock valve. He said the green color was an indication that it had leaked. I said it wasn't leaking now. He insisted that the inspector wouldn't approve it. So reluctantly I said go ahead. So I got charged extra - i think it was $84.00 - but not sure. They failed to give me an itemized receipt. Moving forward...the inspector came out last week and signed off on the installation. I asked him about the valve and explained to him what the plumber from this outfit told me. The inspector said that it probably did not need to be replaced and that the green color was because the previous plumber that installed the valve failed to wipe off the flux and due to sweating the valve and over time the green appeared. I believe the inspector. I can't prove it because the installer cleaned up everything and never asked if I wanted it. I wish now that I had that valve. I think this outfit is just out to make more money. read more

I ordered a 75 gallon Hot water heater from Home Depot and they sent out Champion Plumbing to install it, when Lee came to my home he said he only had a 50 gallon water heater and no pvc power vent to do the job, in our home we need a 75 gallon heater because we have a whirl pool and I wash clothes daily as we told them this in the store! We are very upset because when we went in the store to put our order in, we told them what we wanted and now they are passing the buck and we sit with no water and taking the day off from work so we could get our new water heater. We decided to purchase a new high efficiency Rheem water heater at Home Depot and have them install it on a Thursday. Alex from Champion Plumbing LLC (a HD subcontractor) arrived and started the installation. He quickly removed our 14 year old water heater and installed the new one. Upon completion he opened one faucet to clear the line of air and after payment he quickly left. At first we thought everything had gone really well until 2 hours later when we noticed that our shower spout didn't have enough water pressure in either of the lines to get the shower diverter to work at all even though it was working fine prior to the water heater replacement. Also my Heating and A/C contractor pointed out to me that the vent pipe work that Champion had done for $69 additional was not done correctly. It wouldn't pass code (end cap was missing which could allow carbon monoxide to enter our home). We contacted Champion only to find out that they had closed an hour before (at 5pm) and despite their website stating they had emergency service, the person that answered their phone indicated that they could not send someone out until the following day. I left a message with that person to have the manager or owner call us back as soon as possible as they had left for the day. We then contacted Home Depot and again we were told that there was nothing that could be done until the following day. I asked for a manager and was told no one was available until Friday. I left a message to have someone call me back ASAP. On Friday morning it took numerous attempts to get a hold of someone at either Champion or HD as neither one had the courtesy to return our calls. I finally got a hold of someone at Champion and they indicated that they could send someone between noon-4pm. The plumber (Cole) from Champion arrived around 2pm and did rectify the vent pipe issue but told me that the shower issue was due to a bad mixing valve and wasn't their fault. He indicated that he would have to charge an additional $285 for that repair (this was in addition to the $1376 we had paid the day before for the water heater and installation) but wasn't sure if he could get the part (he said his part supplier may or may not get back to him yet today ) and we might have to wait until sometime the following week as it was now around 2:30pm on Friday. As this was our only shower/bathroom and not having it working for the entire weekend was not acceptable. As Cole was wrapping things up I called a plumbing supply house that indicated that they probably had the part in stock but if I could hold a moment they would check their stock room to confirm. Cole from Champion was about to leave and I asked if he could wait a moment to see if the part was available? He nodded yes but a moment later he went out the door and left. As it turned out I was able to get the part that Cole said we needed within the hour for $22 and due to the bad service from Champion I decided to install the part myself. As luck would have it ...Cole was wrong and that part didn't solve the issue. I called around a dozen plumbers late on Friday afternoon and couldn't get anyone to come out that day even with emergency service and the higher emergency rates. I finally found one company MSP Plumbing that could come out on Saturday afternoon. They quickly took apart the shower mechanism and diagnosed that the low water pressure issue was due to the pressure regulator valve that had been both clogged and destroyed by sediment not by the part that Cole from Champion had indicated was bad. The back of the pressure regulator valve has two ports for the hot and cold water feeds and both of them were plugged with sediment but one of them had been blown apart by the sediment being driven thru it like a bb fired under high pressure as this part is made of plastic (like many newer plumbing parts). Due to this the part was unrepairable and needed replacement but given the late hour no one was open to source the part. MSP Plumbing came out first thing Monday morning with the proper part and in less than an hour our shower was fixed. Nick from MSP Plumbing became our new best friend. In summary our water heater replacement cost $1369 + $22 for an unneeded part and an additional $423 to fix the damage that Champion caused for a total of $1814. Champion should have taken more care to make sure that the sediment was purged from the plumbing pipes as much Based on our experience it's evident that Champion is only interested in how many installations they can do each day and could care less about doing quality work. In our case this caused the inconvenience of not having the use of our only shower for 4 days and could have been tragic had we not discovered the potential carbon monoxide issue. read more

Champion was selected from Home Depot to come and do a same day installation of a 50 gallon water heater. When the tech arrived to my house, I showed him the old water heater which was almost identical to the new one. He starts inspecting the vent pipe for the power blower and says that it isn't up to code, and that in order to meet code, they would need to cap it off, and re run the whole thing. Part of the reason he mentioned was because he claimed the pipe that cannot be seen is of the wrong material (and different from the visible schedule 40 PVC pipe). In the he quotes me $850 to run new PVC, and $75 to cut off the old tube and fill it with spray foam. Then says if I want to schedule it to call the office and leaves - giving me no option to have them install the water heater same day. Well.... I ended up installing the water heater myself and saving the $728 they charged in labor for just that (I subtracted the cost of the exact same water heater at Home Depot, which is where I got it). I got my permit signed off, and low and behold, the PVC pipe that was there to begin with passed just fine. Also the pipe that was above and hard to see, was also schedule 40 PVC. I believe they were trying to SCAM me out of $925 by falsely claiming that the existing PVC wouldn't pass inspection, which probably scares most people into doing what they suggest. Take each quote they give you with a grain of salt because they're probably trying to screw you. read more

I would never use them again. We replaced a water heater and Champion came recommended by a neighbor. I should have known better from the start when the receptionist gave me conflicting quote and process information on multiple calls. Their pricing was above other bids but decided to go with them based on the recommendation. The workmanship was shoddy. The installers left garbage and both copper and PVC pipe remnants/shards throughout the semi-finished basement area. The same receptionist didn't seem to care when I called back to inform them. Champion also installed new gas lines and regulator that smelled of natural gas the moment they went in. We were told the smell would dissipate but never did. We just had a furnace tune-up and was informed the work done on the water heater install was incorrect and new gas regulator had to be installed. Magically, the smell is gone. read more

They were out within a 2.5 hours and quickly installed the water heater. They gave us a lot of helpful of advice and didn't try to scam us. Overall the price for the heater (50 gallons) and installation was $1,300. Another company wanted $2,400!! RC and Troy did a fantastic job. I contracted Home Depot, who contracted Champion Plumbing to install a new hot water heater. The plumber gave a window of noon to 6:00 and still arrived late. He offered solutions to installing the hot water heater which included now venting to bring it to code or install a power vent. Neither of which he had. The original cost was going to be $1000 and his estimate shot up to $1900 for one way and $3000 for the power vent. I in turn did the job myself for $700. I would have paid the $1000 very happily. They went from a $1000 sale to $0. Not happy. read more

Centerpoint came out yesterday and said we needed to replace the water heater and a plumber would contact us. Within 30 minutes Champion called and scheduled an appointment for this morning, they called early to confirm and then again when the plumber was on the way. Darnell was the plumber, we was very professional and polite. He took the time to explain what he needed to do and walked us through the new water heater features. This company came out to my house to install a new water heater as a subcontractor for CenterPoint Energy. The plumber tried to tell me that before he could install our new water heater he needed to bring our gas line up to code. He said the existing valve was a gate valve and he needed to install a ball valve. I asked him to explain the difference, which turned out to be so minimal that it didn't sound necessary. He said it was state code, so I asked which code, and he couldn't tell me. So with him standing there, I call the State of MN Building Code Division and spoke to an engineer with the Plumbing Dept who also is a policy analyst. The state engineer did some research and told me THERE IS NO SUCH CODE. The plumber insisted there was a code, and said he wasn't going to install the water heater unless I let him bring the valve up to the non-existent code. I said fine, just bring the water heater into the utility room and don't hook it up. He said no, he was leaving WITH the water heater THAT I PREVIOUSLY PAID FOR thru Centerpoint Energy. I told him I paid for it, he couldn't just walk off with it. He said he could because the price of the water heater included installation and since I wasn't getting the installation I wasn't getting the water heater. Thank GOD I paid the $1300 directly to Centerpoint and not the plumbing company directly! I called Champion's office and the receptionist was so condescending, telling me to stop yelling at her, meanwhile talking over me that this was indeed a code and they were keeping MY water heater and she would transfer me to the GM's voice mail so I could "vent". I vented, and then called CenterPoint. Centerpoint reiterated that was a bogus repair, there is no such code - all that matters is that there is a valve -- which I do have. CenterPoint said the plumber was wrong in trying to force that repair on me, and to lie about it being a code requirement. I don't think CenterPoint is going to use this company unless they demonstrate better ethics. I'm pretty sure the State Licensing Board, isn't going to be pleased either.. read more

Not only was he able to repair it without fuss, he also tightened the shower fixture and stopped my screen door from slamming - then showed me how to readjust it when it needs it. Overall, I was very happy with the repair work and knowledgeable plumber. I gave a one star due to their trip charges, should you decide not to hire them, and pricing structure. There is a reason they don't give pricing info over the phone. The pricing is crazy high. I needed a shower valve installed, which took Cole 45 min. Price was quoted at $450. The quote was around $1200 to come back and install the entire shower assembly. I had a couple other items I wanted done and the cost for every little thing was between $500 and $1,000. read more

I called 3 plumbing companies and Champion was the only one that could come within a day or two. The other two companies were 2 weeks out. Now I know why. Champion would not give me a quote, are outrageously expensive and work is substandard. They do not charge by the hour but by the task that is completed. The plumber reset a toilet stool that was leaking and connected 2 water lines that were already in place. The fee to reset the stool was $285 (took 15 minutes) and to connect the water lines $125 (took less than 5 minutes). Total $410 for 20 minutes or $20 per minute. That night the water line leaked all over the garage floor. When I called the company the next day to come out again I was told there would be another service call fee because it was not the same day. I am 70 years old and on a fixed income so I decided to forget it (not knowing how much it would cost this time). Unfortunately I do not have my shower. The plumber worked very fast and did not waste time but I would not recommend this company to anyone. read more

What a rip off!! I needed a leaky showerhead repaired so my options are to repair the leak or install new fixtures/equipment. The cost for both an installation of a new fixture or to repair was super high - so I opted to have the leak repaired on the existing fixture. The plumber seemed unable to remove a part and basically wanted authorization to cause more damage and thus may require new installation which was nearly double the cost of just the repair and didn't include equipment! I asked that no further repair to be completed. He wanted $50 for the 5 minutes and limited work that was completed!! And, he had the nerve to tell me he waived a $85 trip charge! (Of course, I was never informed there may be a trip charge!) There are lots of plumbers in the metro area - steer clear of Champion Plumbing. read more
