I came to Montreal for a work conference and I fell in love with the city. For me, the city brings a plethora of activities and its bustling streets are spectacle of their own with many sites to visit. The French influence on everything is very real and welcoming, I enjoyed it all. Besides attending the conference, I found time to explore, and I highly recommend it by walking. One of the attractions was the Mount Royal Chalet, which offers amazing views of the city and beyond. Sure you can Uber to the top, but I recommend expanding the extra energy and walk the trail/stairs to the top of the city. The trail is a mix of cobble stone, packed gravel, concrete stairs and wood stairs. I was worried that my business casual attire would get in the way of hiking this trail, well it didn't. No hiking or workout clothing or shoes required, just go! The climb is roughly 600 feet of elevation gain through a forest and the distance can be lengthened by avoiding the stairs and zig-zagging up the switchbacks. Either way, you will arrive at the top of Montreal and the views are well worth it. The chalet at the top is not the attraction, the views are, but it does offer restrooms if you need them. I highly recommend this when visiting, especially for sunsets with city backdrops and nearby landscapes.

I'm reviewing just the Chalet and not necessarily the hike/walk to it or the viewpoint outside of it. L O C A T I O N The chalet is located at the top of Mount Royal Park. I hear there's a parking area closer by that would remove the hike from the bottom if you're not ready for that ascent at the end with the stairs. I N S I D E There's apparently a cafe inside which I think was in the back which cannot be really seen upon entry. There's a few seats and tables to catch your breath and also restrooms. I just wish folks didn't hoard the seats or make it look like they're waiting for people. There was a person who basically took over a corner with a whole set of benches, table and seats and it was just him and his computer as others were trying to find places to set themselves down to catch a breath. It's a beautiful building and if you look up, there are squirrels! There's really not much else inside but then again, I only explored the front main area. There were a lot of people when we went so there wasn't really a place to sit. Though as mentioned earlier, there was space...folks just weren't keen on sharing. O V E R A L L It's free minus the cafe of course! It's a good space to catch your breath, get warmed up, take a restroom break, before you head back down. Or even just get alway from the elements outside. Right outside is the view of the city which is beautiful especially on a clear day.

Yes, there is a great panoramic view of the Montreal skyline but I've visited many other fantastic city viewpoints without the hassle. Not likely to ever return and wish we had used our time visiting there enjoying something (i.e., anything) else in the city. Here's our experience: * GPS initially directed us up through the adjacent cemetery, which was crowded with visitors and a slow speed drive. Back down to Côte-des-Neiges was more direct, but moved at an equal snail's pace. * The trip to the parking lot, that is the closest you could get to the chalet to visit, was solid, excruciatingly slow traffic, exacerbated by the people directing traffic. (They need a better system!) * You have to pay for parking in the park lot, even on Sunday. * There are no public restrooms by the parking and Info Center, only a porta potty for people with disabilities (that I was told was disgusting). * The hike to the Chalet from the parking lot is manageable, yet steep. * The entire Chalet, despite having a pretty hall, smelled like poop as if there was a sever sewage backup. I don't know how people could wait in line (or work) at the indoor Chalet café. My friend told me their public restrooms were a mess. Totally gross!!! Given the popularity of this destination, you'd expect whoever manages this public Chalet and park to make it a better, easier experience.

Situated in Mount royal park, the chalet provides a cafe and restrooms for when visiting the lookout where you will get a panoramic view of Montreal and a great spot to see the Leonard Cohen mural but beware it is very busy with everyone trying to get that shot. Afterwards you can head down lots and lots of steps to street level and visit St Catherine street or peel street and do some shopping and have a very enjoyable day out!

Moderate walk by path and little more challenging by stairs. Not for the faint of heart. Lots of places to step out to take a rest. But if you are out of shape, the path is a more gentle way up. Chalet at the top of the hill has bathrooms, cafe and gift shop. You may have to wait a while to get a spot at the esplanade as everyone stands at the wall taking selfies and group photos with Montreal in the background. Great view of the city and nice workout.

Great place with wonderful scenery. Unfortunately, since it was New Years, the cafe within the park was closed, which I honestly think they should have remained opened considering there was A LOT of people who came by. I mean, if there was a staff at the information desk, then it would have been beneficial to have a staff at cafe.

Chalet du Mont-Royal or Mount Royal Chalet was the highlight of our visit to Mount Royal Park (Parc du Mont-Royal: https://www.yelp.com/biz/parc-du-mont-royal-montr%C3%A9al-3). I think any visitor to Montreal has to go see it. I'm not sure where else outdoors in Montreal has such beautiful, wide, sweeping views of the city. It's like the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, but with less traffic and people, and better views. Mount Royal Chalet is located on Mount Royal, the small mountain in Montreal the city is named after. We took the long way to the chalet by hiking up the mountain from the west-side entry point at Pine Ave W and Peel St. The quickest and easiest way to get to the chalet is by parking in one of the lots off Remembrance Rd and walking up the Olmsted Trail from there. It's probably about a short 10-minute walk from the lots. The chalet, which opened in 1932, is home to what's called the Belvedere Kondiaronk. It's really the belvedere that's the main attraction here. It's spacious and has quite the overlook. It's large and faces southeast over the city. The vista is breathtaking, day or night. We came at sunset. The chalet itself, which is open daily 8am-8pm, offers Wi-Fi, food and drink, a gift shop, restrooms, and an information desk. If you're visiting Montreal and have never been to the Mount Royal Chalet, I definitely recommend checking it out. The small walk/hike is worth it.

Quite a hike to get up here especially from the southside of the park and especially when you are wearing snow boots in the winter. It is a beautiful view when you get up there but should be quite honest, it's nothing spectacular. As a tourist, I would do it just to say that I've been. There is a building here where you can buy coffee, tea, baked goods and use the bathroom. I bought the hot chocolate and it was absolutely disgusting. I was furious. Bathrooms were clean though.

Kondiaronk Belvedere is one of the best touristic attractions in Montreal. Situated in the park of Mont Royal it offers gorgeous views south including downtown Montreal, Saint Lawrence river and even Mont Saint-Hilaire. The Chalet du Mont Royal located at the same spot is a beautiful building one should visit. It also has some important facilities such as coffee shop and bathrooms. The view point can be reached easily by car from Cote de Neige. Parking space is abundant and payed. Alternatively take the Rue Peel Steps, 15 to 20 minutes of climbing and you will be rewarded with beautiful sights. Must do during every season!

The Long Version: Shaughnessy Village is one of my favourite neighbourhoods in Montreal. Its northern boundary is Sherbrooke St. W. and spans as far south as Rene Levesque Blvd. To the east is Guy St. and to the west is Atwater Ave. Lots of Concordia University students live in this area and as a result, there are lots of cheap eats to be had. Once upon a time when I was living in Montreal, $0.99 pizza slices were ubiquitous, but there was this one pizza shop either on St. Marc or St. Mathieu that had $0.49 pizza slices and I'd go there often. The place is long gone, but you can still find food for pocket change in the area. Supermarche Bonjour (de Maisonneuve Blvd W) has fresh pork or vegetarian bao buns for $1.50 each (the beef baos are $2). These prices are a bit of an outlier though, but I'd say you can eat well for about $10-$15 a meal easily in this area. There's a good variety of cuisines in this neighborhood, which has only gotten even more diverse over the last few years. PA Supermarket is in this neighbourhood. It's an independent grocery store that usually has great deals. I used to shop there a lot when I was a poor and starving student and all these years later, they are still around. And they've expanded too and have opened new locations since I left Montreal. Great little neighbourhood, especially for diverse inexpensive casual eateries. Review #235 (2025)
