A 13th-century castle sits above this city. This is said to be one of the seven historic townscapes of note, which sounds like something UNESCO dreamed up. The historic center is pure magic. Christmas markets! Straight out of a Hallmark movie but with cool architecture. There's even a Christmas street. In love! This is an amazing day trip from Prague.

Yes, its definitely touristy, all the locals live on the outskirts, but you'll still love the much smaller crowds compared to Prague, especially in late September when I was there...it never felt crowded like London, Paris, Rome, Prague. The historic buildings, amazing architecture, trees, the Vtlava River, and Cesky Krumlov Castle from above...its all so breathtaking and heavenly, especially for photographers and social media addicts. All the restaurants I ate at were wonderful. Its impossible to accurately write about it...just look all the pictures, and make sure you add Cesky Krumlov to your Czech Republic vacation/holiday. Other Yelpers say you can see this town in a half day as day trip from Prague, but that's not enough time. You'll definitely want to stay at least one night to see this gorgeous town at night...I stayed 2 nights and could've easily stayed a 3rd.

The visit is worth a few hours and I highly recommend stopping in for a Piro or a nibble at one of the many options. For those that enjoy the villages above the large cities this is an excellent 2:2 day trip. It is a mini Prague from the early 90s with none of the potential stress of large crowds and uncouth tourists - mostly. While the big European cities make excellent gateways, these hamlets always stay in my mind the longest.

It's bustling due to the tourists and less so because of city activation. On the square you'll see the police office, several hotels, museum of torture, alleyway to the Muchá art exhibition and around six alleys/streets that pour into this center space. Cars are allowed to pass through although it's minimal. There are several benches near the fountain for folks to stay while and soak in the space. From the square, it's a five to ten minute walk to the castle, monastery and brewery.

Our Waitress was friendly, attentive and willing to please. We had some wine and the thickest hot chocolate ever. The outside is a cute unassuming restaurant front. Downstairs you have the kitchen and a gorgeous staircase up to the dining area. The restaurant seating is small so coming early or making a reservation is a great idea. The food here was top notch Italian food. The pizza tasted fresh and was authentic. The pasta was equally amazing. Prices are fair, albeit in cash. I do wish they had some different beers on tap as there is something inherently wrong with drinking Budweiser in one of the beer capitals of the world. Overall, NG is really top notch and one of the better meals I had in weeks of eating out throughout Czech Republic.

The atmosphere - some might love it and somebody might be freaked out by the stuffed animals. They have also real fish swimming around artificial stream. In general kids love it there (maybe they have never asked if the animals were ever alive? }:) The 4 stars are the reason of confusion made by changes every time I visited this place. I suppose there were owners changed in a matter of past few years - changing menu and unfortunately leaving some great stuff out. Still very tasty though It also looks like favourite place for weddings, so you might prefer to come different day than Saturday.

Not only is the whole area breathtaking but just knowing the history that this area has seen gave me memories to always remember. Its worth every step up .. I can't wait to return.

This is the Castle where Richard the Lionhearted was held captive when he was kidnapped on his way back from the crusades. To stand atop this hill and know the kind of history that has taken place in the region is simply a priceless experience. Visit Durnstein, and everyday while you're there make sure to climb the hill all the way up to Kuenringer Castle.
