After 4 years of living in Chile, I still can't fully dance Cueca, but I try...oh, do I try! Club…read moreMatadero, although somewhat far from downtown, is the place to learn Cueca Brava. Cueca Brava is a spin on Chile's traditional dance, "Cueca", making it more urban and sexy.
With a live band, amazing dancers and where wine and empanadas flow, the party doesn't stop at Club Matadero. When I'm not dancing, I love to watch the dance floor, where generations collide. Young 20 somethings dancing with older men in their 70's they have never met --this has to be the most interesting coupling, but it is totally normal and in no way creepy-it is all part of the dance.
Another unique thing about Club Matadero is, because of its cozy setting, you feel like you are partying in someone's home. This makes dancing more fun, since many people switch partners and at times everyone dances together. While the Cueca band takes a break, Cumbia is usually played and everyone floods the dance floor to sing along.
Tips:
Everyone pays entrance fee of about 4 mil (this is to pay for the space and live band)
Prices are very decent: A bottle of wine is 3 mil, Terremotos 2mil and soda 1 mil
They also offer Cueca Brava lessons every Friday from 8-10pm & costs 10 mil for the month!
This is a community run Cueca club so it is not always open. Check their Facebook page to find out when they will have their next event and don't forget your handkerchief!
