However, inside, despite the rather dire colour of the carpet and the continual background humming of some form of generators, is an environment which many students thrive in. During exam time, the library is teeming with people cramming their notes and if you want to find a secluded spot, it is often worth coming in a bit earlier. There are numerous computers and a clever express station area for quick email checks, which makes the wait for a computer never long. The library has an extensive collection of books and the recalling system is easy to use. Also, DVDs may be borrowed - certainly a cheaper alternative (i.e. free) than borrowing from a store.

The computer systems they have in place are easy to follow and the staff are always willing to share their knowledge and the assistance is provided in a friendly and positive manner. They have been invaluable in assisting me with paperwork and gathering information. Also this summer I was fortunate enough to attend a lecture in their facilities too. They provided a comfortable well lit and airy environment that was very well suited to the lecturers needs and sign language interpretation was available too. What a wonderful service and community feel this library has it's a privilege to be a member and it's a facility I now feel more likely to use .

The Central Library is a great haven of peace and general silencio on George IV Bridge, if you're in that mood where loud noises and crowds and traffic are annoying you. It's a pretty big place, with several floors of...well...books, tables for reading and studying, and some computers as well. As long as you have a library card, you can get free internet access here for an hour or so. There's also Wi-Fi now, which has been brilliant for me, because I am the most susceptible person to distraction ever, so working at home can sometimes be almost impossible, and I struggle with cafes at the best of times too. There's just too many people to watch and outfits to analyse. Working at the library is always a good concentration call, and they have plenty of space for people to beaver away at their homework/articles/crossword etc. There's an awesome feeling of history to the building too, so while you're working away you can imagine yourself one day, after that long awaited intellectual breakthrough, being written about or being a writer and then placed in book form on one of the shelves. I needed some documents printed for the same day, so I thought to head to Stirling's library,…read moresomewhere I'd never visited before. In my former student days, I'd head to the on-campus labs. So, somewhere that offers printing isn't something I've really thought about until now. You don't need to be a member to print but if you're thinking of becoming a regular visitor, it's worth joining so you can just get on with whatever you need to be doing, after showing your library card at the desk. In order to gain entry for the day, I had to show something official with my name on it. - A bank card was just fine. I was then sorted with a PC log-in. There were just four PCs, all free at the time. The library was very quiet when I visited around midday but perhaps busier periods can become a little difficult with so few available. The Windows systems running on the computer was a really out-dated one, and the computer itself was a little bit slow. I get the feeling that the computers are mainly to be used for searching the library's book collection, as I was unable to close this function, only minimise it. I printed the three documents I need and an additional copy of one of them. Unfortunately, only the three separate documents came out and not the extra one. This wasn't such a big deal, and I could do without it. I had what I needed and I had plans approaching. So I paid 15p for my three black and white A4 prints and I was on my way. I got just what I was after and there was the added bonus of pleasant, helpful staff. This would certainly be a good place to spend a few hours on something productive, if you can't quite find peace at home.

Bleachingfield is East Lothian Council's main office building for the Dunbar and East Linton area…read more It pretty much has everything that you would need for a council-owned building. Dunbar Library was relocated into here a few years ago and although the new building does not have as much character as the older building on Belhaven Road which is now an art school with a hideous pink door, you do not go to the library to stare at the building all day - you go there to look at books! The new purpose-built space is bright and clean with friendly staff, and as I mentioned before, lots of books are in-store. As well as the council offices, the centre also has a sports hall which is used for the polling station during the elections as well as a small coffee shop which is run by a local charity called The Ridge which helps people find jobs. I feel that it serves its purpose and that is why I often drop in when I am in town.

There is a separete chidlrens department with books at their level and smaller chairs for them to sit on. There is free internet access and a good refernce section as well. There is plenty of helpfull staff who will show you around and help you find what you are lookin for. They will order in books that are not stocked in the library if there is enough demand for the book. Parking can be a bit of a problem but there is a local supermarket quite near by and it is only a short walk from the town center. There is also a lift available.
