My biggest pet hate ever happened in this Spar today. I went to the counter with a drink costing…read moreunder £1 and they told me they didn't accept card for purchases under £5, even though they had contactless installed, which meant the transaction would have been quicker than paying with cash. So I then had to go outside use the on site ATM and withdraw £20 (they didn't have any tenners) for a 98p drink! Surely it's time to accept card for all sales? The shop itself is actually quite good, it's in the heart of student Belfast so it stocks all the essentials, party snacks, energy drinks, pot noodles, ready made sandwiches. It also has a coffee machine and as mentioned an ATM on site! Losing a few stars for their ridiculous card rule!

As far as convenience stores go this Spar is actually pretty good. It has a great deli counter…read moreselling a range of cooked breakfast items, freshly made sandwiches, wraps and salads. Additionally they have a coffee machine and stock freshly baked croissants, pastries and cakes. There are a lot of other items too - magazines, stationary, prepackaged sandwiches, fruit, ready meals, bread, confectionary, household cleaning products, painkillers, deodorants and shower gels etc. Much better laid out than a lot of similar shops and the prices are reasonable, plus there's an ATM outside. Only one drawback exists - this Spar is located near Queen's University and in a main student residential area, hence it's swamped with customers during uni term time. Can be extremely busy, especially around midday.

Formerly known as Russells Cellars they've now dropped the Cellars as they want to appear more current and chart in the top 50 (that last bit was made up) - much like our old pal Prince did. See, told you that was going somewhere. Anyway, this morning I was undertaking some pre 9am arts and crafts and I needed a few bits of equipment (scissors and tape) so I popped in to Russells to grab them. At first I couldn't find what I was looking for but turns out they keep these items behind the counter. The diversity in stock sort of sums up Russells - they literally sell everything from wine to polly pockets - hear that students, they sell stationery, so stop asking your mates to borrow a pen in lectures and go buy some here. Price wise it's pretty good value, this is because it competes with The Centra a few doors down but the major difference is that it sells booze. All in all a good 'jack of all trades' convenience store. Good name change too, I think it works.

I think Russell's is one of the best convenience shops in Belfast and this is largely due to the…read morefact there's a very well stocked off license section instore selling a great range of wines, beers and ciders. Other than booze you'll find bread, olives, hummus, sandwiches, crips, nibbles, chocolates, snacks, some frozen and chilled foods plus magazines and newspapers in Russell's. A one stop shop for all your needs!
