I matter at Awaken Church…read more Being a Jew and unsure what I was even looking for in a church, I selected Awaken one Sunday and sat down to listen. I was impressed but had very little to compare it to. A few weeks went by and I received a few invites from friends to join them at their churches. (Seems like there may be extra credit points given to people who recruit new souls, but I'm not 100% sure) I date a lady who, a few weeks later, invited me to her church. It was a MEGA church, very plush with police directing traffic and even had an upstairs basketball court. In fact, I was very impressed with the giantic video screen and the smoothness of the presentation. I've see the Stones, U2, Aerosmith and Lady Gaga in concert and that church might share the same production-manager as those bands. (based on how fancy the place was. Lights dim at just the right time... It was big time show business BIG!) I never got to meet anyone running the place. The congregation was nice, nothing bad to say about anyone there. It's just... I was invisible. I was looking for a place where "I MATTERED". A place where I could learn, but also make me feel like I was part of the entire church eco-system. Not just, sing, give, leave, sing, give, leave. At Awaken, sitting in the small audience, I feel like I matter. The Pastor, whose name is Elliot (I know this because as we shuffle in each Sunday he walks up to everyone and says "hello" and welcomes us all) Last Sunday I invited my lady-friend to come to my church, Awaken. She did. Smiling she said, "I really like your pastor. I've heard the story he told a thousand times before, but I have never heard it told that way. I really like him. I really like this place." And now we come together. Sure it has childcare, free coffee, a modest band and all the standard things a church needs to have .... But we have Elliot, and all the nice people that Elliot attracts. I like this place : ) Hopefully, you'll be standing there, close by, when he stops the service and asks you to "say hi to someone standing close to you."

Today, we arrive and it is a full house. The first two times we came, we watched the pastor preach via a live broadcast. The pastor was at another local branch, but the message was meant to every branch of the church, so it was broadcast to everyone. I inquired if it was like that every Sunday. It was explained that they only do that when a message is part of a series, so that if people go to various branches of the church, they won't feel lost. This third Sunday, the pastor was at this Weslaco branch and other branches were receiving the broadcast. Newcomers aren't put on the spotlight and embarrassed. As a newcomer, being asked to stand up, or worse, to go the front of the church with everyone watching can be intimidating. However, at this church, at the end of the service, they dismiss the congregation and ask for newcomers, who want to, to approach the front if they wish to be prayed for. We approached the front and Dina, the choir director, prayed for my family. We were given a tour of the facility and explained things we had questions for. Overall, this continues to be a good experience.
