I matter at Awaken Church…read more
Being a Jew and unsure what I was even looking for in a church, I selected Awaken one Sunday and sat down to listen. I was impressed but had very little to compare it to. A few weeks went by and I received a few invites from friends to join them at their churches. (Seems like there may be extra credit points given to people who recruit new souls, but I'm not 100% sure)
I date a lady who, a few weeks later, invited me to her church. It was a MEGA church, very plush with police directing traffic and even had an upstairs basketball court. In fact, I was very impressed with the giantic video screen and the smoothness of the presentation. I've see the Stones, U2, Aerosmith and Lady Gaga in concert and that church might share the same production-manager as those bands. (based on how fancy the place was. Lights dim at just the right time... It was big time show business BIG!) I never got to meet anyone running the place. The congregation was nice, nothing bad to say about anyone there. It's just... I was invisible.
I was looking for a place where "I MATTERED". A place where I could learn, but also make me feel like I was part of the entire church eco-system. Not just, sing, give, leave, sing, give, leave.
At Awaken, sitting in the small audience, I feel like I matter. The Pastor, whose name is Elliot (I know this because as we shuffle in each Sunday he walks up to everyone and says "hello" and welcomes us all)
Last Sunday I invited my lady-friend to come to my church, Awaken. She did. Smiling she said, "I really like your pastor. I've heard the story he told a thousand times before, but I have never heard it told that way. I really like him. I really like this place." And now we come together.
Sure it has childcare, free coffee, a modest band and all the standard things a church needs to have .... But we have Elliot, and all the nice people that Elliot attracts. I like this place : )
Hopefully, you'll be standing there, close by, when he stops the service and asks you to "say hi to someone standing close to you."
