It was a fine morning and I was on vacation, so it was time to get out of the house and go somewhere new. The place? Cellon Oak between Gainesville and La Crosse.
I seem to recall being at this park one time before, many years ago, but realistically nothing really reminded me of my visit there, so I may be completely wrong and had never been there before.
The park is a simple one... no playgrounds or anything like that, just a large open field, a couple of picnic tables, and one massive oak tree dominating the Western edge of the park. Let me say, this oak tree is truly massive, definitely outstripping the old Live Oak that was outside of the Physics building on the UF Campus (until it fell down a couple of years ago).
Just walking under this tree you get a sense of majesty and age. Oddly, it is a bit like the feeling I got when I walked underneath a large ship that was in drydock. Everything gets very quiet, and you have this strange feeling of weight above you that you don't get anywhere else... except for this oak tree for some reason.
This park is a nice place for a picnic, and the tree is definitely an impressive sight. read more
