The Waterton staff picked her up in their van and brought her to Waterton upon admission. The staff was very attentive, professional and friendly. They took very good care of my mom. She was extremely pleased with the care she received and none of her family worried about her while she was there. The staff remembered our names and were so nice. My mom said the food was excellent and the staff were just fantastic. If she had a question or need they were right on top of it. The nurses and med aides were great at making sure they stayed on top of her pain, giving her pain meds when needed as ordered by her doctor. We all were so relieved that she was getting the best care from all the staff, nurse aides, nurses, administration and therapists. They called me and her husband and included us in her care plan meeting. They answered all our questions and eased our minds. I can't thank them enough for what they did. She is home now and doing great.

On March 9th 2000. I used drugs for the last time, and then went to get on a bus to report to…read moreprobation. I did this knowing I was going to fail yet another drug test. I lived in a world where things were starting to close in around me. I was on probation for drug misdemeanor drug possession. I was doing things that if I had been caught would land me in prison. That report to probation I told my PO that I was at the end of the line. It was either jail, or somewhere away from where I had come from. We called over 30 facilities trying to get me in. All either would not take me, or had a 30 day waiting list. We both knew something had to give. We prayed together. He gave me directions to a local motel that I could afford to stay in for the night. We wold try to call more places the next day. 2 hours later as I was eating my dinner there was a knock on the door. I looked out the peep hole it was my PO, and behind him was a very large black man. My thinking was that he was there to take me to jail. He had gotten the biggest guy in the place to come with him. In case I put up a fight. I opened the door, and he introduced me to Isaiah. As a leap of faith. I got into the van with him. I gave my word that I would give 6 months of not using, and applying myself to the program. Later that night he dropped me off to the bus at a church in Ft. Worth. I rode 3 hours on that bus not knowing where I was going. Nor what I was getting myself into. I had a $5 bill in my pocket, and pack of cigarettes with me. I did not even have a change of clothes with me. The staff helped me to get some more clothes. I will point out some things to cut to the chase. The place is not heavily structured. They get to most things at least 15 minutes late. You are going to have to get used to hearing the word No. You will need to understand that at times people are going to say one thing to appease you. Then do something else. Outside the gates of the place you are going to encounter a whole lot of that, and not have as many folks around to talk to about it. My breaking point came there. After 6 weeks there, and not using the whole time. Rock bottom for me was not being broke. It was not having to do without. I went through that while using, and managed to attain the ends, and means to get by, and keep using. I was holding onto thoughts of using once I was away. It was when I faced some cold hard realities that something in me broke. I cried out to God. For the first time in as long as I could remember at that point I felt peace inside. I dedicated my life to Christ, and would share the Gospel with all that would hear. I graduated at 6 months to the day. I went to the recovery home in Ft. Worth and was not able to get work until I cleared up my probation status. Isaiah brought me back to the ranch to help out around the place until we could meet with the judge. We later met with the judge. The judge was impressed by the change he saw. My probation was extended. I stayed and worked for HOI for 4 years after that. It was hard. It was tiring. Days off were very few. God has since greatly rewarded me for that sacrifice. I have since then worked at a few different jobs. I am typing this as I pack to move to another state. As I am starting a new career that pays more than twice what my last job did. I would not be where I am today without God, and the House of Isaiah. As far as work, and careers goes. I have had to pass drug test for every job I have held. My last job I was drug tested 16 times in 10 years. Not a single one failed, I never had to worry about a single one. I would not be going to a better job now if I had not been able to pass the drug test either. If you have a set back. Do not take a step back. God has a comeback.

But when I was a kid, I was the definition of a troubled teen. And if it wasn't for Sundown Ranch, there's a good possibility I wouldn't be around to make this post today. Although this was many moons ago, 1997. But it being that it's still around today tells me that its fundamentals haven't changed. Is it glam whistle summer camp, no. It's still a treatment facility but compared to inner city facilities their approach and environment is the difference. It's light years apart (I went to all available in DFW at the time). Not only did it help me recover from severe addiction and depression. Social anxiety the list goes on. But it also gave me tools to deal with obstacles still to this day in life. So if you're having issues with your teen do not look away because of negative reviews coming from patients that likely couldn't cut the mustard and or get honest w themselves . This place and the staff truly saved my life and I am forever grateful.

I will post the same review here that I left on Google. Sundown is on my mind today after sharing…read moremy experience with someone who is making a documentary about the abuse that happens at Sundown. Solitary confinement is not an effective correctional tool for clients who are a danger to themselves. In fact it creates lasting psychological damage. I beg any parent considering Sundown Ranch to read the multitude of traumatic experiences detailed here and elsewhere online. Every adolescent treatment center is going to have mixed reviews because obviously it is common to have a disgruntled teen who is angry that their parents forced them to attend treatment. I speak from first-hand experience when I say the abundance of traumatic stories online about Sundown are very real and the shear amount of them should give pause to any sane person. Please compare the reviews here with any reputable treatment center. Read the articles and reddit posts about the horrors experienced here. Sundown is not the only treatment center I went to as a teen and I have nothing but positive things to say about the other places I went. There are hundreds of treatment centers out there helping parents and teens to heal and get their lives on track without using the harmful, barbaric methods used at Sundown Ranch. As a grown man I cannot imagine experiencing the things that happened to me here as a child. I was tackled and physically restrained for raising my voice in a group meeting. I was held in solitary confinement in a locked pink room with no windows or human contact for periods of 5+ days at a time, multiple times. I came to Sundown as a survivor from a violent abusive household and I was only further traumatized when I left. I am now a sober adult in my 30's. Living with the PTSD I incurred from Sundown is one of the greatest hurdles in my recovery. Words cannot express how much Sundown takes away from children and families who need real help. There are thousands of adults living with trauma because they were sent to Sundown as teens. Read around online, call around to people in the industry, Sundown is notorious for the abuse that happens there. There is not a shred of research that supports solitary confinement as an effective correctional tool. As I said before. it is proven to cause further damage. Which should be obvious to anyone with a brain or a heart. They are masters of manipulation and they prey on families who are in a state of crisis, profiting by selling hope to desparate parents. If you work for Sundown and you are reading this you should be ashamed of yourself, but I know you are too brainwashed to accept that kind of personal accountability.

I will be forever grateful to everyone at this facility. I recommend this facility to any person that wants to learn tools and put in the work to find a new way to live. The treatment team (and it was a team including a medical professional for med management, therapist for mental health, addiction counselor, case manager, and nursing staff) worked tirelessly to ensure I received all the support I needed to start my recovery journey. The curriculum is the best I ever had at treatment. Choices of morning meditations, DBT, CBT, Trauma Therapy, Art Therapy, Music Therapy, Yoga, Wilderness training and then treats, as long as you were participating in therapy, such as horse back riding and zipline. Shae at the PHP level also was so amazing! But I have to give this warning, the program director JON, is very difficult to deal with. I know I can only speak foe myself but I have also heard from multiple people how he doesn't really seem to care about his clients that PAY to come there. He doesn't seem so out anymore effort into writing updates for your insurance company and he is vey judgmental as him not being an addict/alcoholic himself. But other than him I love Vertava!
