The studio provides a safe and supportive space for children to experiment, learn, and discover the magic of art. They are also very pretty flexible with rescheduling classes. The instructors, Maria and Lana, are…read moreabsolutely amazing--they have been incredibly helpful and supportive throughout both of the courses I've taken (Key Elements of Fine Arts for Beginners and the Realistic Open Art Studio). Even though I had some prior experience, the classes on portrait drawing and proportions were highly valuable. While the abstract art component wasn't for me, every single skill they taught was ultimately put to use in my final project. Thanks to their wonderful guidance, I've created paintings I never thought I was capable of making. I highly recommend this school!

My almost 7-year-old has been attending this school since she was 5. Why? Because she genuinely…read moreenjoys it. She loves that she is never bored. Every week she learns something new: new styles, materials, and techniques. Sometimes they focus on painting, other times on sculpture or different forms of art. Katia and Sara have both been her teachers, and she has felt happy and supported with all of them. Like with many activities at this age, it took a couple of weeks for her to fully adjust and feel familiar with the environment but consistency made a big difference. As parents, we appreciate seeing her come home excited and proud of what she created. It is easy to notice how much she has progressed over time and we get very excited when we see her project. We also appreciate the communication style of the school. They provide a high-level overview each week of what the kids will be working on, which keeps parents informed without overwhelming us with too much information. On the administrative side, tuition payments and renewals are simple, and the staff has always been friendly and helpful whenever we have had questions or needed help resolving any mistakes on our part. We also love the location. Depending on the day and who is with me, it is easy to wait nearby at the library, a coffee shop, or a restaurant while class is in session.

Everything was going ok however, at some point Sirron asked if I had "conservative" ideals. I was taken aback a bit, but I answered honestly that I said that I am conservative, due to my experience being inside of Google and how I saw them become evil and how I'm trying to stop their agenda. He literally then goes into a tirade about how everyone who's conservative is evil, and how whites have ruined the planet and how I should move out of San Francisco because no one wants conservatives here, and how he will never work with anyone who is a conservative -- Wow. Really unprofessional attitude. And just to set the record clear, I didn't insult Sirron or anything like that. He just tore into me because he wanted to. He could have just been professional and declined the work offer, thus avoided sharing his intolerant, prejudicial and inflammatory remarks. But nope. I really wish I had recorded the conversation somehow because this sort of encounter would have gone viral on social media. Seriously, it was that bad. Other's be warned!

Most of the activities are for older teens to adults so I was excited when my son fell into the age group for ceramics class so he could work among older artists. I'd never been inside the cobble-stone building that I know best from its annual Christmas Tree lighting so I was surprised when an instructor told me the building dates back to the 1880s. (For all these years, I thought the building was a cheesy 1940s replica with its Flintstones-like appearance). Inside, it gives away its age with squirrelly warrens of rooms and tiny doorways- high Victorian. Artists were busy upstairs drawing and the hallways were decorated with work in progress and schedules regarding pottery firing, class registrations and notices about broken plumbing. There was a quiet hum of people speaking sotto voce, a clatter of brushes and the scritch scritch of charcoal on canvas. Programs here are largely lead by SF Parks & Rec, one of the best resources for activities for San Franciscan residents of all ages.

I initially found the center through an instagram ad that was advertising their free open studio & decided to check it out. The intuitive painting course is not your typical course. The focus is being in community, learning to listen in & lean into your own intuition & creativity. There's no formal technique, no critiques or comments, but there is a lot of guidance & prompts to help you tap into your creative spirit. The goal is to create a painting from within & quiet the inner critic. It's about the process of letting go of "perfection" & to be create whatever comes up. It may sound a little woo-woo but the beauty of this process is that there's no right or wrong or good or bad painting - it's about your experience. If you're still unsure, I'd recommend dropping into a class to see what it's about. I definitely plan to take more classes in the new year.
