Second time there wasn't near as good. I had the ribs and was very disappointed. They were very dry and flavorless. It seems that they didn't add the bbq sauce until right before serving. Cattle Baron has been a go to for "nice" dinners for our family (that is huge) to celebrate special occasions, together. The western decor focusing around the large Salad Bar is very clean and on par for the vibe. There is a bar area for dining, as well. If you ever pass by here at peak lunch or dinner hours, the large parking area is packed! A reservation is recommended or wait times should be expected, unless it's an off peak hour. This past Tuesday we had a party of 10 for mi abuelas 90th birthday celebration with a 3pm reservation, since that is when my grandmother typically eats. They sat us at a very nice wooden table, but we were a bit crammed in with everyone elbowing each other as we at and a few on the ends having to straddle a table leg. Service was on the slow side with apps coming out before our drinks were delivered, and without offering appetizer plates for the large table to share. No clearing of salad plates or drink refills when the food arrived, but we stacked and cleared some space ourselves. The food was all really good. Grandma loves the Cheese Sticks and Sautéed Mushroom appetizers so that is what we had. Several of us had Chicken Fried Steak, a few had El Rio Pollo, one steak, one salmon, one Salad only and one Crispy Chicken salad. We all loved all the food! My local Cattle Baron closed during the pandemic and is sorely missed. When I read that another location had closed, I decided to drive to Hobbs to support that location. It may be nostalgia, but I think it was better than the one I used to frequent. It's all about the salad bar here. It's extensive, with constantly rotated fresh ingredients. I also had the green chile and pepper jack ribeye medium rare, and it was cooked to perfection. The old west atmosphere is pleasant, and our service was prompt and polite. Bumping my previous rating of Cattle Baron up to 4 stars. This is the best place in town to chat with an old friend and enjoy a salad bar lunch! Their prices for said soup/salad bar are $12.95 per adult (as of 10/31/2022) not including a drink. I like that they give you a ginormous plate to stack all the fresh veggies onto... and they have quite the array. Plus homestyle Ranch dressing--so good! The soups are decent, but they also offer a few side dishes that are good. Not bad because you are allowed to return for seconds, thirds... Our waitress Aylin didn't kick us out or pressure us when my friend & I were deep in discussion about our pasts. Large parking lot. Cozy atmosphere. Full bar. I'm a fan of this lunch routine. Great salad bar!!! With fresh vegetables, fruits, pasta salad, banana and chocolate mouse pudding and delicious soups!!! Bread and butter served at the table and went nicely with the salad bar items. They also have the good ranch!!! Ordered cocktails at the beginning of the meal and received our appetizers AND dinner and we ate half of our dinner before they were received. Service was almost at par. Waitress could have been a little more friendly. Ordered the catfish with a loaded baked potato. Fish was fresh with just the right amount of cornmeal breading and paired well with the tartar sauce. Baked potato cooked perfectly and the sour cream, bacon bits and green onions made it even better. Medium prime rib - cooked perfectly but a little bland. Ordered the steak fries and were ok as well. I always stop in at Cattle Baron when visiting my parents in NM - it is a tradition. I was shocked the reviews were so low when opening my app but could not disagree more with the opinions of others when I've always had an awesome experience! I joined 5 other friends for dinner recently during Thanksgiving break and we walked in and had a table within 5 minutes of arriving. We started with the sampler appetizer plate and the delicious bread they bring out when you sit down. It was all amazing and our favorite was the wontons and definitely would recommend. I ordered the steak NM with green chili and pepper jack cheese on top. It was cooked medium to perfection and had a loaded baked potato on the side. Not to mention - SALAD BAR! $4 more to add the epic salad bar is worth it to your meal. They have anything you could dream up for toppings and have a selection of soups too. I enjoyed the chicken enchilada soup the day I went and it was sooooo good! My friends also ordered steaks and one had the bourbon glaze and says it's to die for. I'm not a whiskey fan but if you are, it's a must try! I will be back soon. I always look forward to having dinner here when visiting in NM. read more

It's been more than three months since I have ate there but the food has always been great and the service too.

My server was Jerry and was very attentive, professional, and on top of his game. I appreciated him being observant and noticed me inspecting my wine glass (as it came thru from the wash w lipstick marks) he quickly asked if everything was ok and replaced it quickly. The food is great, my favorite is the Steak New Mexico. It's a New York strip with hatch green chili and Monterey Jack cheese. The service is beyond the best, we always try to get seated in Crystal B. Section but if she's not there we'll sit anywhere. Cattle Baron could work on the ambiance in the restaurant. My wife and I just enjoyed a wonderful meal at this restaurant. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who's hungry for steak and a super salad bar. Seems to be going downhill on the steaks. Steak was seasoned very well, but extremely tough and slightly over cooked. Staff was great and the salad bar is still great although due to our governor's order it's limited and not currently self serve. You get a paper with the limited options and fill it out. Wasn't as good as normal since the portions of items I'd normally do were off. Not their fault though. Hope they can get the steaks figured out. It's pretty bad when Texas Roadhouse has much better quality and cooked steaks and you're a steak house. read more

I come here a lot. This visit I learned that first come first served in the bar doesn't apply all the time. Apparently you can hold a table for your friend (1 person) if you are the waitress. Not really a way to keep customers (4 of us) coming back. Bad servers kill a business no matter how good the food is. read more

Stopped over in Hobbs on way to Eunice and saw this place - decided I was starved for a steak and wandered in. What a very nice surprise - seemingly like an old timey steakhouse, the place was filled with charm and the delicious aroma of grilled beef and chicken. I ordered a NY Strip and enjoyed a long stay over at the salad bar, which was clean, and filled with fresh fruit, veg and all the fixins you could ask for. The steak was cooked perfectly at a medium-rare and not too heavily seasoned. The baked potato was large and tasty. With a glass of ice-tea and tip, I was out the door and well fed in under 45 minutes and under $45. The only thing preventing 5 stars was an error on my bill that involved a cranky staff manager who complained about the staff to me while fixing the bill. An apology and a free slice of pie would have been just fine. read more

This my second visit to this location and I have also eaten at the Roswell location too! A co-worker told me that he had a bad meal here last week. So, I decided to try it again-I called first to see if they were busy and the gal that answered the phone said they were not busy and I didn't need a reservation. When I got there 15 minutes later, she told me it would be a 15 minute wait. Unless I wanted to go into the bar, I looked around the corner and said okay. I sat done and while I was reading the menu, a lady asked me what I wanted to drink, but she never brought me anything. Several servers walked by me pretending I was invisible. I sat there waiting for my drink or someone to stop and take my order. Finally a blonde waitress (Bre something) stopped and asked me what I wanted to drink and brought me my drink and bread. Her timing was perfect because I was ready to walk out. I ordered a salad and NY strip steak. She promptly delivered my salad, which was very good. I was about halfway thru my salad when another lady brought my steak-now this is one of my pet peeves-not giving me enough time to digest my meal. My steak had great flavor, but had too much fat and gristle. Without my server this rating would definitely be 3-star, but the service provided elevated the restaurants rating to 4-stars read more

Zero stars! This place is disgusting. There was a hair (very long) in my food. It was 10 min before someone even came back to our table for me tell inform them about the problem. When someone finally showed up there was no apology. No one cared. I asked to speak to the manager and said I didn't like the fact that no one cared about hair being in the food and I found it gross and no one even apologized. He then says oh well sorry you took it so personally. What in the world??? Are you kidding me. How on earth is this the manager. We went here to have a drink or two and maybe an appetizer. When we entered, the hostess was kinda standing at her post, slouching over to the side a little, and just staring at us without a smile, grin, or even a hello. FINALLY, she spoke and asked us how many was in our party. We told her we would just sit at the bar. We walked ourselves to the bar and sat down. The bartender, Marissa, was very nice, attentive, and quick. She made a good Moscow Mule. My husband got a beer. We ended up not eating any appetizers because we weren't really that hungry. The bartender made it a pleasant experience, but the hostess was not friendly when we entered. We were VERY surprised when the hostess told us to have a good night as we were leaving since she was so rude when we entered. We will return to try the food one day.
