I love Winnie and Garfield.

In April, we adopted two litter siblings, a brother and sister. Linda asked us to bring them back if it didn't work out, we assured her we would. Garfield and Winnie were perfect. I couldn't wait to spoil them. Garfield loved exploring our home. Winnie did too but she was more shy at first. Once she got comfortable she came out of her shell and was very sweet. Time passes and one day I saw that one of them (or both?) had peed a good amount on an upholstered chair in our bedroom. I cleaned it, threw out the cushion stuffing and was able to get the smell out. Later, I witnessed Winnie peeing in the corner of our gym room carpet. A day or so later, I witnessed Garfield peeing in that same corner, and about that time, I began noticing a strong cat urine odor. I read black light flashlights are used to find urine so I bought one. With that, I found there were many spots/areas they had peed on carpeting. I contacted Linda by email and she gave me some suggestions, one of which was to put a second litter box in the gym room, which eventually I did. She didn't like my Litter Robot even though I told her the cats use it fine. I never once got mad at the cats for the peeing. I just took care of the spots using the appropriate remedies. These things weren't working so took them to the vet and she diagnosed them both with FIC, FLUTD, Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease. I had never heard of it. Poor Garfield was in a lot of pain, his bladder was inflamed. I felt terrible for him. The vet told me there is no cure and put them on a 14 day pain and inflammation medication and said it might or might not help. A week later, on July 4th, I didn't realize it at the time, but because of the popping sounds that night, I guess it made them anxious and they both peed all over the place. I found this out early morning of the 5th. Even though the second litter box was in the middle of the gym room and the Litter Robot they also used was right there, too, they still peed in 5 new places on the carpeting in addition to the 25 places they had already peed. I know it's not their fault and never blamed them. I wish we had hardwood floors or tile throughout our upstairs, then it wouldn't have been an issue. We cannot afford to replace our carpeting with a hard surface, it's a large house. Upstairs is plush carpeting, downstairs is hardwood. They never once peed downstairs. July 5th, I surrendered them to Catmandu. I was a mess having to return the kitties I have fallen so in love with. Our neighbor, Kelly, drove me because she and my husband didn't want me to drive because I was so upset and crying. When we got there, Linda treated me as if I was a criminal. She had no empathy for my feelings whatsoever. Kelly said she never witnessed anything like it and that Linda was very unprofessional. I miss Garfield and Winnie so much my heart aches for them. I wish I could have kept them but they were unfortunately ruining our house. My heart wanted to keep them and put up with it but my mind told me otherwise. I feel as if Linda thought I shouldn't care about my house, that the cats mattered more. She made me feel like a bad person for not wanting my carpets peed on. As much as I love Garfield and Winnie, I knew I couldn't keep them. My heart was torn. I sent Linda an apologetic email and asked how Winnie and Garfield were doing and she has not written back to me. Not a peep. She was so rude to me. I think she sees herself as a cat savior and does not care for people's feelings. I see that she has Winnie up for adoption on Home to Home and she is not mentioning anything about specialized care. The vet put them on Hills Prescription Diet Food and said they had to be on it for the rest of their lives. She saw lots of crystals in both Garfield and Winnie's urine samples. They also need filtered water, not distilled, tap or bottled, it has to be filtered water. Given that she is not mentioning these things, she is misleading the next adopter into thinking the cats are healthy. Nothing is mentioned about peeing outside the litter box. She has all my documentation from the vet. Now, I am not trying to hinder Winnie being adopted, I want the best for her, but I believe that this information needs to be known to whomever wants to adopt her, so they are aware and can be prepared. I think it's very possible Linda knew about these issues when we adopted them in the first place. The vet office I took them to thinks it is likely she knew. They think because she is not being up front about the issues on the current adoption site with Winnie, very likely she was not up front with me about the their health issues. I believe Linda's goal is to adopt out the cats no matter what, omit information about them, let the people get bonded to the cats and then hopefully keep them dealing with whatever. She was mad at me because I returned them. I wanted to give them the best home ever and spoil them with love. I love Garfield and Winnie and will always love them.

He loves his new cat tree!

The potential future cat owners are screened well to make sure the cat will fit in well to its new forever home! I appreciate the care Linda and her helpers put into the efforts of helping us find the right kitty to join our home. These cat caretakers do wonderful work!

Precious Penny Lane (formerly known as Socks). Adopted November 2015!
Kelly E.

Adopted a kitten from Catmandu in November 2015. Firstly, these are cat people- and if you don't plan on being devoted to your cat, save some time and go elsewhere. IF you are ready to give a cat or kitten a loving forever home, then Catmandu is for you. We have had our precious kitty, Penny (formerly know as Socks), for about a year. She is happy and healthy- we couldn't have asked for a better cat. Consider adopting and donating regularly to this amazing non-profit shelter.

People started lining up at 11 AM for their pantry, which runs on the first and third Friday of the month from 12 noon to 4:30 PM, and on the fourth Saturday of the month, from 1 to 3 PM. Clients may come twice a month. Typical food selections for a family are some meats, fresh milk, juice, cheese, canned goods, some fresh fruit and vegetables, sweets, and packaged goods. It depends on how big your family is. They also have a small clothing pantry here. And just today, they started offering cleaning supplies and toiletries, like body wash, conditioner, toothpaste, sponges, cotton balls, shower poufs, luffah scrubs, make-up remover, glass cleaner, powder cleaner like Ajax, toilet bowel cleaner, and laundry detergent. They were lots to choose from. As clients waited in line, another volunteer brought out chocolates and nuts for them. They provide boxes and bags for the clients, and even push carts so they can wheel the goods to their cars. I was very happy to be a part of this wonderful organization today. Please note that the location can be hard to find. It is in the back, in a converted storage unit of iStorage, along with other small businesses nearby. It is directly to the left of "Buy It For Less" once you get to the storage rows. You can enter the business at an entrance off US 50 immediately to the west of Classy Seconds, or use US 50 to take Brown Street south, then make a right onto Gordon Street. They are in the western row of the businesses in iStorage (left part of the "U"-shaped storage rows). The location is marked incorrectly on Google Maps (they are off by one storage row), but I will correct it today. --------- EDIT: The location has now been updated on Google Maps.

I wanted to make a Yelp event from this info even though I do not have any pets myself. The office is the national headquarters for all their outlets in the U.S. It is on the second floor of an office building on West King Street, called King 400, in Carson City. Most of the offices here are state offices, such as the Department of Agriculture. As I entered the suite, there was a large open area with offices around it. There was a small customer sitting area right at the entrance and a display case. A woman there walking around seemed to ignore me, but I think she was just a volunteer. A few moments later, the main employee (director?) came out. She explained what they do and the programs they have. They supply food pantries all over the country with free pet food and supplies. There is a map on the wall with pins that mark each of their locations. And the corporate office is here, in Carson City! How lucky am I to be living here?! :-) (They do not do pet adoptions, by the way.) Anyway, the for the event, the first 100 pets (not people) in line whose owners are homeless or low income will get the following for free at the Free Pet Wellness Clinic: pet exam by veterinarian pet vaccinations dog license pet nail trimming voucher for free spaying or neutering (limited supply) pet food pet supplies People start lining up early at 8 AM I was told, so you better get there early of you are interested! Cats must be crated or in a box, and dogs must be on a leash. The following are donating their services: Sierra Veterinary Hospital Timberline Animal Hospital Nevada Humane Society Carson City Crazy Cat Grooming and Canine Academy The employee asked me not to put this as a Yelp event, since she feared this would attract too many people. There are posters for the event, however, at various locations in the city, such as FISH, and there doesn't seem to be a lot of interest in the Yelp events I post anyway, so I am not sure if it matters. If people are low income or homeless why not get the word out? So I thanked her as I left, and she said I could get more information about what they do on their website: https://www.petsofthehomeless.org/.

On the other hand, so many people make it less enjoyable. All the lines were so long that we ran out of time to try everything. We started at 5:30 and left by 7:30 with only trying about maybe a half of the businesses due to time and effort. Everyone seemed packed like sardines which was a bummer. Other than that, I love that it goes to a good cause. The food was great and there were a lot of options! Portions were small.

Pre purchased tickets at a discount of $40 a month ahead online. Picked up at will call in the afternoon before the lines started. The event doesn't begin until 5:30 pm. Several blocks of Carson Street is closed off for the event. Good thing, there are a ton of people at this Saturday night event. There were 33 spots to try- Carson Nugget- cheese ravioli with marinara Caraway Charcuterie- cheese, pepperoni and hummus Sumi Sushi - four choices of a sushi bite Thai Basil- pad Thai, curry beef and rice Squeeze In- mini walnut pancakes with a honey butter sauce Arby's- roast beef slider, no sauces Juan Mexican Grill - mini burrito Great Basin- sausage with grilled onions on pretzel roll, and tiramisu Cocina Lupo- we never saw it, disappointed. Always enjoy their food Bully's- mini burger right off the grill The Mix- ran out of time Feel Good Food- choice of Buffalo Mac n cheese or burrito bowl La Capital- mini birria quesadilla Code 4- was bbq. Missed it Keva- passed Lady Tamale- choice of tamale or birria bite Bubble Tea Corner- 4 choices of tea Johnny Rockets- burger Trader Joe's- passed cookies and snacks Starbucks- teas Red's 395 Grill - a large rib, pulled pork sandwich and baked beans. Stellar Snacks- missed Bella Vita Bistro- chips and dip Boba Babes- 2 teas Shoe Tree Brewery- missed Lady Griller Catering- slider Flavors of India- butter chicken, mango beef and rice. Jimmy G's- flavored cigars Obviously there was a ton of food and I just couldn't try it all. Some portions were a meal in themselves, others were the perfect bite. There were also several adult beverage options for purchase and could be carried around the event. Three different bands to listen to. Some people danced, others came prepared with chairs to sit and listen to the music. Experienced locals had wagons with built in mini tables and cup holders, coolers, wet ones, and utensils. Brilliant!! There's street parking and several lots a block or two off Carson Street for use during the event. I would try it again. But maybe consider splitting a lot of the bigger portions.

I went here twice, on Thursday, March 28, 2019, and again on Thursday, April 4, 2019…read more This building is the new location for all Salvation Army social services and church services. This location used to be a Greater Nevada Credit Union with drive-thru, and the old sign for them is still there. This Salvation Army Corps Community Center used to be at 661 Colorado Street, but they moved a few years ago. They are still trying to sell their Colorado Street location. Please note, their Thrift Store (now called the Family Store) is located at 3320 Research Way, next to Maverik, off of East College Parkway. The Thrift Store used to be on East Winnie Lane, before they outgrew that location. Please also note that these two new addresses have not been updated on their website or Facebook page. The were not also updated on their Yelp pages, until I created them, today and last week. I guess they are not good at doing that. I hope Yelp believes me and approves this new page. The entry for the food pantry and other family services is off S. Harbin Avenue. For youth services only, you have to use the doors in front, on East 2nd Street. There is also a church, which has service on Sundays at 10:45 AM. The woman who runs the food pantry is on leave, so a cleaner is filling in for her the next month or so. so things are a little disorganized, as the fill in does not want to disturb the folders on the desk of the regular employees. So the forms I gave her the week before can no longer be found, and I had to complete a new form. Their food pantry is self-service and small, mostly non-perishable goods, since they are stored on shelves in an office. I did grab a bunch of green bananas though. They also have items like conditioner, medicine, and hand sanitizer. So you fill up one bag with whatever you need, subject to the limits they have written on each shelf. They also have a regular refrigerator for some items like milk, yogurt, and limited fresh vegetables. Few people go there, at least there has never been a line when I went. I am not sure why. Someone told me this is Carson City, so there is rarely much of a line, like in my former home of the San Francisco Bay Area. The rules listed are you can go once a week, and they limit you to one bag of items of your choosing, But the woman there said those rules are not enforced. Nevertheless, please take only what you need. They do have fresh meats and vegetables on Wednesday from 1-2:30 PM, but I have not gone yet. The employee said there are all sort of trucks in the parking lot that line up to give away fresh food that day. The hours for the regular food pantry are Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 9 AM to 12 noon, and 1 PM to 2:30 PM. Services require a card, which they issue to you after you provide ID, proof of residence, and proof of income, and fill out a short application. Parking was easy, as they have a big lot.

I had seen them on a Pets of the Homeless referral flier, and I…read morehad never heard of them, so I thought I would check them out and see what they had to offer. I met Dee Dee, who is the director of the two organizations, and receives no salary. She answered my numerous question and gave me a tour. She is a very motherly and pleasant person in her 60's or 70's who has been in Carson City since 1969 I think she said This is actually two organizations under one roof and management: the Rural Center for Independent Living (RCIL), which used to be on Fairview Street, has independent branches all over the country; and the Do Drop In (a day center for homeless and low income people, who need a respite in the day time). What their office does is basically connect people with services, like finding vocational rehab if you are disabled and want to work, or helping homeless people fill out housing and energy assistance applications. They also have a small food, clothing, toiletry, and pet supply pantry; as well as some warm and ready-made food for people in need. You can go there during the day to rest up, watch TV, get coffee, use the restroom, or grab a bite to eat. They are open from 9 AM to 3 PM weekdays. Supposedly, according to their sign, they also go to the farmer's market in Carson City on Saturdays during the season. This organization is also all volunteer. Dee Dee said they are not rich like other Carson City organizations such as FISH, the Ron Wood Family Resource Center, or the Salvation Army. She said other RCIL's get funding, but for some reason, she said they are considered the ugly step-child and get no money. And they get no Federal, state, or local funds either. That is why their offices are small and sort of run down, from my tour. Dee Dee also said that not getting funding is also good in a way, as there is a lot less bureaucracy to deal with, and they can do things more quickly, their own way. To help with funds, they are having an Italian Feed fundraiser on Friday, May 31, 2019 from 5 PM to 8 PM at the Governor's Mansion at 606 Mountain Street in Carson City. They are having a dinner, entertainment, raffles, silent auction, and a wine bottle ring toss. Tickets are $20. You can get more info, reserve a seat, or volunteer/donate at 775-301-6929. Please see the Yelp event that I created: https://www.yelp.com/events/carson-city-italian-feed-fundraiser?utm_campaign=www_event_share_popup&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_source=(direct). You can tell Dee Dee's passion. As I came in, she was on a phone call with a client, and spend at least the next 20 minutes with her while I waited. She told the client to call her back on her cell phone number, which she gave out, every two days until she found a solution. The client, a medical assistant, was looking for a job, health insurance, and anything else. Some of the info she gave out of the phone or while talking to me was incorrect, such as there is a fine if you don't have health insurance in Nevada (in fact, the Federal government ended that after tax year 2018), or there is a long waiting list for housing at Foothill Gardens (a low-income HUD project-based voucher housing complex in Carson City). She was also unfamiliar with Spanish and did not know how to pronounce a client, named "Dulce"'s name. I told her it meant "sweet" in Spanish. My father had the same problem when he first moved to California in the 70's and called the place "Luh Joe-luh" instead of "La Jolla" [la hoya]. Dee Dee believes in housing first and scatter-site housing. She is also is angry rents have gone up so much recently in Carson City and wants to get the municipality to do something. On the tour I saw a small day room with a TV and a homeless man sleeping on the couch. She showed me their small food pantry and toiletry pantry. She opened their refrigerator and freezer where I saw items like ready-made salads donated from Trader Joe's. She also has a crock pot so clients can always get a warm bite to eat. That days, there was potato soup. She made very little eye contact with me while giving me the tour, tending to things instead that she found. There was a single bathroom next to the kitchen area, which was small. The entry room where I waited was like a throwback from the 80's. I saw a huge boombox with two cassette decks. I also saw old, worn-out, and mismatched furniture there, like the kind you would see at your grandparents' house in the 70's or 80's. I will be honest: I was almost scared to sit down there, for fear of bed bugs. The front room/office was also super cluttered, with all kinds of file cabinets, garden hoses, Christmas lights, donated clothing, and everything else you can imagine packed in everywhere around the chairs and desk. Regardless of the negatives above, this organization does good work on very little funds and is all volunteer. The people their are passionate about helping people. That is all that matters.
