Chagall stained glass is worth the trip alone but the Villon was likewise amazing In fact, this cathedral will fool you.....while it looks dark and gothic on the outside, include, it's a kaleidoscope of bright colors from ALL the gorgeous stained glass Peaceful, serene, colors coming in from all sides.....this is not a cathedral to be missed! read more

Timeline of construction 984-c.1040 Construction of an Ottonian basilica on an ancient shrine dedicated to Saint Stephen c.1180-1207 Construction of a chapel in Early Gothic style on the west side of the basilica 1220 Beginning of the construction of the Gothic cathedral within the foundations of the Ottonian basilica, construction of the aisles Basically it's been there a while and a must visit when in town. Exquisite gothique Cathedral... an architectural gem. If you are passionate about middle ages architecture, or simply visiting Metz, please make sure to visit the cathedral Saint-Etienne. It is not the biggest cathedral in Europe, but one of the tallest by its ceiling height, and has the highest percentage of window surface in France, and possibly in Europe. The result is an incredible feeling of peace and serenity. The outside renovation / preservation work is of an outstanding level of achievement. You will see middle ages windows, as well as remarkable windows from the XXth century masters Marc Chagall and Bissiere. The Crypte beneath the cathedral heart, with it's treasures is worth the visit. read more
