Catered Manor is an upscale Skilled Nursing Facility in North Long Beach (CA). The Facility itself is quite nice. This review is about the staff interactions and my experience as a patient/resident there for five (5) months last year 2025. Bedside nursing care was good. However, the facility was undergoing a management change when I arrived there. Tension among the entire staff was high. The Charge Nurses were obviously used to functioning more as 'administrative' rather than 'supervisorial' staff. So when they realized that they were to participate in bedside care under the new management, they gave me the impression that they thought that was beneath their level of expertise and some of them were quite snooty about it. The Activities Director and assistant did a good job of keeping activities interesting, however, the Assistant seemed to have a chip on her shoulder and she was outwardly mean to me, as well as all but one of the front desk Receptionists. Food at the facility was quite good. However, the food service was stingy with snacks and never prepared enough of the at night. Overall, my rating of Catered Manor is between 3-4 stars. My hometown is nearby (approximately 15 miles away). I wouldn't mind going back to Catered Manor as a patient, but only temporarily, as my hometown is where I'd rather be. I rate this facility 3-4 stars. read more

Our family is very grateful to Catered Manor for the quality of care they gave for our Mom. I have to say, it was overwhelming at first, not knowing what to expect since this was the first time we had to have our Mom stay in a facility. From day one, we were so pleased with the attentiveness. The staff were very friendly, supportive, professional. Bobby and Yuly (to name a few) put our mom's mind at ease. She really enjoyed her stay and got better in about a month or so after having her surgery. She just loved everything about this place! And we can't thank everyone enough for everything. My grandmother has been here already for months and I have to say this place is nothing like any other nursing home. It is clean everyone's polite everyone's on top of everything. It's just a really nice place to have your loved ones in. I had to remove her from a different one which I won't mention, but that place was awful. My grandmother is comfortable here and it's really difficult to keep her happy but she's actually good here she's 100 years old. We only want what's best for her we know she needs 24 hr care and this is the place. My grans mother is oriented and remembers everything. It's amazing. Dont send your family here. my grandfather had aphasia (inability to form words) after a fall. they did not know why he was there. he deteriorated over the course of 2 days. he had completely stopped speaking, walking, and went unconscious. But it wasnt until i was yelling at nurses to call 911 that they did anything. when he arrived back at the hospital he had to have another craniotomy. when they took him into surgery they found food left in his mouth and his teeth fell out. I came here after being in the hospital. The staff and nurses here are really great. I came to Catered Manor because I needed therapy to walk again. I love the activities room they have as well. And I have some favorite nurses. When I have to go back in the hospital for another surgery. If I need more psycal therapy. I want to come back to Catered Manor! read more

I called to schedule an appointment for next week and Derrick said he would be too busy to meet me today and next week. I was surprised to be turned away and directed to look online for pictures and saw the negative reviews. I am disappointed that I wasn't offered a date to tour. Hmmmm.... I'm very pleased with the level of care the facility has provided for my mother, who suffered from a brain aneurysm and has dementia. I was looking for a facility that would take care of her needs even when family was not around. Although all staff members are attentive and compassionate in what they do, Alejandra Fernandez has gone above and beyond in making sure my mothers is taken care of, I know this because I notice her checking in on my mother even when she is not assigned to her. I also noticed that she communicates with other staff members about her needs. Another person that has truly made my mom feel at home is Alicia the activities director, she is always in good spirits and makes sure the residents are having a great time during activities. Loved Ones Beware!!!! Do not send your family here!!! My Mother-in-Law is currently a resident at this facility. No one ever returns phone calls, and the staff is clueless. She was admitted for rehab after being in the hospital for a week. Additionally, she has Dementia and requires help with eating, drinking, sitting, walking, all daily activities of life. Just to name off a few of the deficiencies: They failed to transport her to her surgery follow up appointment. No one at the facility seemed to know anything about the appointment, and placed blame on the ambulance company for the failure. Family has visited by appointment from 2:00 - 4:00 pm and by appointment only. Family has found her laying flat in in the bed. Lord knows if they are repositioning every 2 hours as is required. They did no rehab for the full first week of her admission and have made no attempt to get her out of bed. When we call to speak with her nurse, the question is always "why?" For an update of course! Unless, your intent is to just dump your relative/loved off somewhere and be done with them..I suggest another facility. So disgusted! read more

The staff at that facility does the minimum work to taka care of old patients who had advanced dementia and couldn't talk or requested anything. My mother passed away after 3 weeks there, transferred to Saint Mary hospital in a terrible pneumonia and urine track infection. She was there for rehab after a fracture of spine. The fist 100 days at rehab or nursing usually pay by social security, please visit several nursing homes, rehab centers prior to make decision. Make sure that your family doctor is allowed to come to take care of the patient. The staff of this facility is not truthful, the facility values financial interest over the health of patients read more

Don't send your loved one here if you can avoid it. No one from the facility called me with updates on my mother's condition or her discharge. I had to call them to ask about the discharge process and what needs to be done. They literally told me to be there at 11am and they would walk me through the process. When I got there at 11am the next day that "process" was putting my mom in my car, handing me a bag of medications and instructions with no information about refills or follow up appointments. They said "someone will call" with that information, which they didn't. Today I found out they didn't give her the paper prescriptions on the date of discharge and now they want me to go back just to pick them up. If my mom ever needs another SNF stay I'll do whatever I can to keep her out of here. read more

The staff are friendly and caring. The nurses are friendly and understanding. Alicia, the Activity Director really cares about the residents. The Rehab Team is fantastic and encourages patients to participate in therapy, get stronger and go home. Alex from Social Services is extremely helpful. This is the worst nursing facility I have encountered. The staff are rude and unprofessional (or simply not right for the job)nobody will give you information about your loved one. It seems like each employee holds a piece of the puzzle and you have to put everything together to figure things out. The following are some of my own or loved one's observations/experiences while in this nursing facility. 1- we did not get a tour nor were explained how things would work 2- my family members and I had to constantly call and find out what was going on with medications and medical issues that arose 3- communicating with your loved one is an ordeal. The facility has one phone for patients. Most of the time, that phone number is busy, not being answered or another resident has it and does not return it to the nurse. Have to call numerous times or the front desk to track the phone. 4- visitation is scheduled by one person (Alicia) only and most of the time she is unavailable. You will get scheduled a week out for 30 minutes only. We would get attitude because several family members wanted to schedule visits. 5- my loved one shared that there were numerous times when he waited more than an hour to be cleaned after using the restroom and ringing the buzzer. Other times he waited 30-45 minutes to be moved positions or have other basic needs met. 6- on one of my visits, one of the long term residents (Hermelinda), fell off the wheelchair while roaming the hallways; instead of all the employees around her helping her, they all laughed and made jokes about the incident. 7- appointments were forgotten or not followed up on by the "new social worker Alex." 8- the doctor assigned to the facility, Dr. Young, is never around or nearly impossible to get in contact with. 9- the first day my father arrived he was not given breakfast until he reminded the staff he had not eaten 10- waited 2 hours for my father to get discharged after notifying the social worker we were there and the time being arranged by him/social worker Alex. Later I found out he had not told the nurses my father was being discharged at that time and he lied to me about the hold up saying it was due to my father getting a treatment last minute. The discharge was done hastily at the door. The social worker was more worried about moving his car which was parked on the street on street sweeper day. He was discharged with one day's worth of insulin. I called the social worker to follow up on some things and never received any calls in return. 11- my father shared that residents who are unable to communicate their needs get it the worse because they get ignored and neglected. 12- father shared that breakfast is the same 7 days a week; no variation. He was also denied food after scheduled meals; employees would state that the kitchen was closed. 13- asked for a meeting to discuss my father's discharge date, I showed up and was told the chief nurse, Bernie, was busy and would have to reschedule. Meeting was held by phone after me inquiring about it several times. The physical therapist was not part of it as I had requested given that was what was holding up my father at the nursing facility. 14- cash was "lost" from my father's wallet Overall, this was a HORRIBLE experience all around. I was angry and saddened for the residents who don't have anyone advocating for them. Don't wish this experience on anyone. My observations are probably only the tip of the iceberg. If your loved one must be nursed here, ask a lot of questions and stay on top of everything. I don't know how this facility is still operating and has not been investigated. read more

I was looking for a safe, comfortable, welcoming place for my mom to recover from a painful pinched nerve in her spine, and Catered Manor was on the short list of places her insurance would accept. STAFF: As with virtually any facility like this, the staff is extremely busy and they are required to care for quite a number of patients. It seems really unfair to burden a caregiver to this degree, but to keep costs down, I understand that's the way it usually is. Despite this reality, all of the caregivers are unbelievably kind, compassionate, understanding, and hard-working. They don't want anyone to suffer, do all that they can to improve a resident's circumstances, and listen when you share a concern. They are responsive to problems and work hard to find solutions -- I appreciate that and think they should all be given capes to wear with their uniforms, because they are SUPER HEROES, for sure. FOOD: The food is simple, but my mom has enjoyed it. The first night, she got a tuna sandwich with some cole slaw, creamy soup and fresh cut melon. Other meals included turkey and mashed potatoes with gravy, scrambled eggs, a pancake, and a variety of other things that she's also liked. Okay, so it's not Coq a vin, Vichyssoise or Truffles, but my mom struggles to use a fork and knife sometimes, so occasionally, basic, easy-to-eat, nutritious food is just what the doctor ordered! Yes, I know it's difficult to please everyone's tastebuds, but the nutritionist here works hard to accommodate special patient requests, and if you ask me, that's the best anyone should ever ask. ACCOMMODATIONS: Yup, there are three beds to a room, but given what insurance will cover, this isn't surprising. Despite the limitations, the staff works hard to protect privacy, make things comfortable for patients, and answer their calls as quickly as possible. While it's true that sometimes, my mom has to wait a bit for this or that, the waits are generally more uncomfortable than anything else and NEVER endanger her health. This isn't a 5-Diamond Spa, but then, needing medical care isn't a walk in the park, so the lack of putting green, tennis court and sauna didn't factor into my review! AMENITIES: Nice little PT room with caring therapists; roll-in shower; dining room and patio; chandelier in the lobby, uplifting pictures and art on the walls. Sounds silly, but they work together to create a loving and peaceful environment, perfectly suited to healing. TAKE-AWAY: If your loved one is sick or incapacitated, a place like Catered Manor will be a Godsend, and I mean that with my whole heart. My mom is surrounded by angels here (despite some of the crabby, demanding, difficult, struggling residents) and for that, I give them tons of heavenly credit! If you are looking for a safe, clean, caring place, you probably can't do better than Catered Manor. After reading horrific reviews for other places, I was understandably nervous, but the team here calmed my frayed, panicked nerves, and even gave me reason to smile. Maybe it was the luau (and the male attendant wearing the grass skirt), or maybe it was the kindness of every staff member I have met, but this is the next best thing to home, and I encourage you to at LEAST check them out if the need arises. My mother was discharged from the hospital and sent to this place. After two days they sent her back to the hospital because they didn't feel equipped to take care of her. They sent her without all of her things, including her purse, so she had no glasses or cell phone. I then had to call catered manner today and talked to her social worker, Nancy, who said they would do what they could, or mail it. I insisted, they could not mail it, as my mom needed her things immediately, today. Nancy became very flip with me, saying okay sir, sure, thank you, goodbye. Right now I'm waiting to talk to Nancy's supervisor.I would never wish this kind of treatment on anybody. read more

What a horrible and horrific place to have your love ones in their care! They did nothing for my brother, except feed him well. My brother, who has dementia was there for 3 months, until he was transferred to a memory care facility. I am disabled myself, but had to start loading up my walker to take my brother's laundry home to be washed or otherwise all of his clothes would been stolen. Alex was the worse. Totally unprofessional in his position and always says, "I'm sorry," with such a patronizing tone. Never return phone calls and when you ask to speak with someone else they are always in a meeting or busy. All medical appt. and medical transportation had to be made by me, as their competency in doing little things were a nightmare. Only reason I am giving them a one star is because there is no zero star. read more

So happy to say my 92 yr old mother arrived late last night and so impressed with ALL of her care. Covid arrival and protocol are still in place, which is appreciated.... But it's the personal, continuous care she's receiving that our family is comforted by. Our focus is to get her home asap as her issue is blood pressure only. The entire staff understands as "a team player" on the goal. My mom has been a patient there twice now over the last year. Her first visit was post covid, so I was able to visit her. Everyone was very nice, the place was clean and she was cared for. She did have her own room, however the room was intended for three people and maybe that was just a result of them not being full at the time. The food is just okay, but you can bring in food - which I did for my mom. No issues with her stay at all. The second visit was during covid so I wasn't able to visit her. She was there for about two months, unfortunately caught covid while in the facility.. but was treated great, they kept me posted every day. Never made me feel like I was bothering them when I called every single day, twice a day checking on her. I feel like these places in general just aren't the greatest but I always felt like my mom was safe and well cared for. I would give five stars if the food was a little better. But the staff deserves five stars. read more

My grandmother was hospitalized and her doctor highly recommended going to a nursing facility mainly for the physical therapy and occupational therapy. Prior to her hospitalization, she was mentally well. I did a lot of research and found catered manor to be the most acceptable option. Or so I thought. The ONLY reasons I am giving two stars is because the PT and OT staff are seriously amazing. They are patient and caring and really tried to help in any way that they could. The food was also good quality from what I saw. -three people to one small room with an old school tv in the middle. Elderly people can't even see that far on such a small screen! -The nurses and CNA's couldn't be bothered to help. My grandmother had to get up to use the restroom (at this point she couldn't walk on her own) so I pressed the call button and it took ten minutes for someone to come help. I know it was ten minutes because I timed it intentionally. My grandma couldn't remember that she had a call button and really had no idea where she was. It seemed like the only people that got care were the ones that could ask for it themselves. -I went to visit her every day for several hours. One Sunday I came in later than usual and found my grandmother laying in her bed, with no clothes on, shivering, and the curtains drawn around her. THE STAFF LEFT HER UNCLOTHED AND JUST PULLED THE CURTAIN SO NO ONE COULD SEE. She couldn't call out for help and she wasn't strong enough to get out of bed by herself let alone dress herself. I about lost my mind and confronted the CNA assigned to her excuse was that she undressed herself.... the poor woman wasn't even strong enough to eat by herself! And there were no clothes in sight! -By day three I asked if they were ever going to have her shower. The CNA's response was that she didn't want to shower. She was not mentally well! Of course she doesn't WANT to shower! The whole point of being there was to learn how to take care of herself again! They also hadn't given her a tooth brush or brushed her hair the whole time she was there. When I asked they told me she was given those things at check in.... Well I was there at check in and never once saw a toothbrush. No one tried to help her with it. I just started doing it for her myself when I realized that they didn't care. No one took the time to make sure she ate either. -I told them I wanted to do her laundry for her. I even wrote it on the paper in the closet. They took it anyways and lost two days worth of clothes. We never got those back. -My grandma's main issue was that she wasn't absorbing oxygen into her bloodstream and was instead retaining high levels of CO2. When she was in the hospital they did daily arterial blood gas tests. She arrived at the facility on Tuesday with normal test results (the reason they discharged her). By Thursday morning she was acting more delirious again and I begged the nurse to talk to the doctor to get an ABG done. They ignored me and didn't have anyone there to do the test until the following Monday. If they had done the test sooner maybe she would still be alive. She passed away two days after they did the test from low oxygen levels and an infection. OVERALL: I would say if your loved one is able to communicate their needs to staff and to you then maybe this place would be ok. Especially if they are mainly there for the therapy. If that is not the case then stay as far away from here as humanly possible. read more

My mother-in-law has been a full time resident and she gets the loving care she needs and that our family expects ... Catered Manor exemplifies what a true devoted nursing home should be.
