I've been coming to Castro Valley Coin for about 4 years now, after dealing with a bunch of other coin and metal shops in the Bay Area, and Greg and Apollo are hands down the most honest and fair I've worked with. They've helped me facilitate several large precious metal transactions, both buying and selling, and every time the process has been straightforward, transparent, and professional. What really set them apart for me was when I needed help selling my grandfather's Babe Ruth autograph. Greg and Apollo basically acted as a trustee and escrow. I placed the item in their custody, they handled shipping it to an authentication service back east, and once it came back verified as genuine, they worked with that authentication company to get it listed and sold on eBay. The whole thing turned out perfect with smooth communication, careful handling, and no drama. Their fee was totally reasonable for the amount of work and responsibility involved. As a side note, I follow Bix Weir on YouTube and I know he's been here too, which honestly tracks because this is the kind of shop serious people stick with. Don't let their character over email fool you. Complete waste of time. Emailed the business prior with a multitude of pictures. Was quoted $91 , lol, not $90 not $95 for my Olympic set Proofs $ silver eagle buillions etc because one of my coins "appeared" gritty / hazy THROUGH THE PICTURE. Looking more HANDLED than originally intended, I figured I'd give them a shot in person because they seemed so "helpful" via their email, but as soon as I walked in I knew exactly what time it was. Awkward stares from behind the registers like what's this type of person doing here & a fake greeting of can we help you? Told the guy behind the counter I emailed prior and he didn't even ask my name or bat an eye. Didn't even ask me too take a look at my items. As soon as I took the first coin out the bag he said my coin had been "handled" and he couldn't make an offer on it. Even though in the prior email with clear pics & multiple pics from different angles, I was quoted "$91". From that moment, again, I knew what time it was. Took my business elsewhere and literally JUST got $110. Listen, I've worked for Apple, Microsoft , Adobe , Nordstrom & Nike, Bloomingdales went too Brown University for college so if you're going too run a business, you shouldn't acknowledge your customers with blatant racism. Straight forward coin shop. Had a decent supply of silver, not great though. Owner did not seem to want to bargin, and since it was my first visit, that might have been the reason. So what did he charge for a 5oz bar of silver you ask? Pretty much the exact price for one on apmex. So the question is, why wouldn't you just order from Apmex? At least you have a way less chance of any of it being fake. Now I am in no way suggesting that's the case here, the silver was 100% legit. Still, there is money to be made for both buyer and seller, but this shop wants all that premium when you buy, but not when you sell. read more

First off I would give 10 stars if I could. This store is under new ownership and I have seen nothing but old reviews on the previous ownership... So I would like to tell everyone about my experiences with the NEW ownership.(Greg & Apollo) I would like to start where I had originally called Castro Valley Coin, just to to ask them if they would simply show my son & I some coins & educate us on coins / bullion? (basically, will you give us a free field trip lol ) Greg one of the owners answered my initial phone call to see if that would even be possible,and to my surprise Greg said "yeah sure come on in" And to be clear...why I say to my surprise, is that I told them I am not sure if we are buyers other than looking for something other than Xbox to possibly spark an interest. And one of the owners (Greg) said sure come on in, (not to many places around that will give a possible buyer their time. But Greg at Castro Valley was willing to share with us regardless. Our first visit to the store was very educational on numismatic values as well as spot values. While being educated we were shown some scrap or junk silver and my son found a key date coin in good condition while looking through the (junk silver) Greg was such an honest guy he gave us the credit on what would have been the numismatic value of the nickle my son found toward the ounce of silver we had decided to buy that day. (what rewarding us for for finding a diamond in the rough? YES they sure did) The other owner there Apollo is amazing, talk about customer service! l went to Castro Valley Coin with some items from my grandmother's estate. The guys there quickly evaluated what I had, weighed and tested every piece and told me which pieces of jewelry they could buy and which ones they couldn't. The entire process only took about 20 minutes, I thought I was going to be there at least an hour with the amount of stuff I brought in! I had hoped to raise enough to send my parents to Tahoe with the proceeds. After adding up all the gold I brought in, there was enough to send the folks to HAWAII.
