I have noticed some of the negative reviews here of the castle, but, it in no way fits with our experience. The historic grounds are well maintained and there is so much to see. During our stay, we dined in the hotel for both breakfast and our dinners. Our dinners were excellent. The fish dinner was beautifully prepared and presented. There was a cheese selection that featured local Welsh cheeses that was first rate. Note: Our server was excellent. Her was a local woman who had a complete knowledge of every dish, dessert and cheese. So, a tip of the hat to Rhianne, the Chief Steward who made every effort to serve us well.

Fundamentally it means that people fill a place full of tat and upsell by saying their bed and breakfast is now a 'Boutique Hotel' and charging double or even triple what the going rate is. I have paid far less in London for hotels far better than this. I paid a Kings ransom purely because it was a last minute booking and I was going to be out until the wee hours at a local gig and it seems this was enough to bump u the price. To top it all, I missed the roll call for breakfast and they didn't even offer to make up a small plate or pot of Tea in lieu. I managed to get a laff out of the experience though, as I was leaving it started to piss down and, because they don't have parking, I had to walk half a mile to recover the vehicle. The 'Manager' opened the door for me and basically shut it immediately behind me without a word of goodbye or the offer of an umbrella. I felt about as welcome as a fart in a spacesuit. It was so existential it actually made me laugh out loud. For the record .... A boutique is "a small store that sells stylish clothing, jewelry, or other usually luxury goods".The word is French for "shop". By literal definition, it is not a fucking hotel.

I am not a fan of modern art but even I was intrigued by the unusual photographs and paintings which apparently change out from time to time. In fact, it felt a bit like being in a hip fun art gallery. Our room was well appointed with a comfortable bed, a flat screen TV, a DVD player and excellent reading lights. The hotel has a small sauna, a delightful reading room/library filled with the latest design magazines and large selection of current DVD's to play back in your room. We booked a half-board stay and really enjoyed the food at the Manorhaus. In fact, the best dessert of our trip to the UK was their Lemon Tart with homemade Honey Ice Cream! We even tried to get the recipe but they politely refused as there are plans to eventually market it. (it is THAT GOOD!). There were several breakfast offerings ranging from healthy to typical fried breakfast foods.

The main bar area was quiet for a monday night, but there was a pianist in the corner and the atmosphere was really cosy, not to mention a good range of real ales that the barman informed me were all local. The room we stayed in was clean and tidy and the staff were all excellent, couldn't have asked for more.

We were treated like royalty, reception booked us in for our evening meal at Castell Deudreath (the more modern hotel and restaurant in Portmeirion Village) and even booked the complimentary taxi service for us so we didn't have to walk up the hill. The meal was superb and the taxi brought us back to our hotel when we were finished. Our room was perhaps a little dated but charming all the same and very pretty and this was all forgotten the folowing morning when we woke up to breakfast in bed and the gorgeous view of the estuary as the sun slowly rose in the sky. I long to return to The Hotel Portmeirion again to fully explore the village and enjoy the tranquility and service we experienced there.
