This beautiful castel built in the 11th century is perched on a hill reigning over the Italian city of Gorizia, at the border with Slovenia.
The castle is truly a gem of the middle-age architecture and well worth a visit and the entry fee is really reasonable.
It was the residence of the Counts Mainardi of Gorizia and Tirol who for centuries reigned over an empire spread all over Europe.
The Castle was carefully restored to its former glory after World War I and inaugurated by the Duke of Aosta in 1937.
It is very well kept and it's possible to tour most of its many rooms which are decorated with original furniture and furnishings.
The central courtyard is beautiful. The castle hosts many exhibitions during the year and you can also enjoy a breathtaking view of the city from the second floor, also called King's observatory (osservatorio del re). read more
