The castle is impressive, a huge structure on the mountain top. Built right out of the stone, this fortress was a critical Aragon stronghold for the Spainish Empire and was fought over for centuries.
The entire old town that sits within the castles walls is a great way to see and visit this 1200 plus year old structure.
Originally bulit by the Moors in the 900s on top of ancient Roman ruins this stronghold has played a part in Spanish history for thousands of years. From the romans to the Visigoths and Moors, El Cid rebuilt the castle in mid 1000s and in 1084 fought and defeated Ramirez at the battle of Morella.
