We stayed at Ferndale House 12mths ago and really liked it. Clean, friendly welcome, great cooked breakfasts and reasonably priced. Now, all of the above also apply to The Abbey Guest House 'Hotel' (not quite sure where the 'Hotel' reference comes from on the sign outside as this is definitely, in nice way, a cosy 'B&B!'), but there just seemed to be something missing. The afternoon tea we were welcomed with from Darren was truly, very appreciated (tea made in the pot and a tasty range of biscuits including an orange club - when was the last time you ate a club biscuit?!) and gave us a great first impression, but somehow this B&B lacks the warmth and atmosphere of 'The Ferndale' around the corner. Our twin and single rooms were cosy, clean and comfortable with firm mattresses and some lovely touches with throws and cushions, but a couple of small attentions to detail were missing; mis-matching decor and soft furnishings work well if done properly, although all rooms were attractive, a good eye for bringing everything together was somewhat missing, cheap toilet paper in tired, plastic dispensers in the en-suite brought home memories of shiny, cheap paper in my high school toilets! Brown limescale/mildew build-up around the shower and tiles was unfortunate. Both areas are very easily fixable and if dealt with, would have drawn our attention to the better aspects of the Abbey Guest House, which made for a comfortable stay. The iPod docking station built into the flat screen TV in our room was inspired for example and the freshly cooked breakfasts with (award winning!) sausages and bacon supplied by a local butcher were a real treat and made us feel good for eating locally sourced ingredients. Homemade blueberry jam put other B&Bs to shame with their plastic squares of marmalade and Robinsons jam. Toast and fruit-filled jam to follow a good cooked brekkie was definitely a winner! The fact this B&B is so central and only steps away from the High St make it very convenient for a night out in town, just maybe pick-up your own softer loo paper from Waitrose over the road before checking in!

We were in Kenilworth for a friend's birthday party and we couldn't have wished for a more home-from-home experience. Liz (the owner) greeted us when we arrived and made us feel very at ease when we explained we were in Kenilworth for a friend's party and wanted to know if the front door would be locked at a certain time. She assured us we could come and go as we pleased and come in as late as we wanted! This made for a really relaxed and assured stay. Rooms are really reasonably priced with a double or twin - £55 and a single - £36; both including a tasty cooked breakfast with locally sourced sausages and bacon (all cooked admirably by Derek, Liz's husband!). We enjoyed breakfast in the bright, traditional dining room and it set us up nicely for a day exploring Kenilworth until lunching later with friends. Authentic, warm, welcoming and within walking distance to town. You couldn't wish for anymore from a good ole British B&B!

Longtime innkeep Martha runs this quaint B & B close to Royal Leamington Spa town centre. I booked…read morean en-suite single and the room was as expected from its listing on Hotels.com. Tucked up just under the eaves, it was a cozy little space. Perfect for my two-night visit. Room had a heater, hair drier, iron and board, mirror, TV, small closet to hang a few items, chair, lamp, drawers, comfy bed, bathroom essentials, and fair water pressure. Hedley Villa is walking distance from everywhere in town. That's not hard, in Leamington Spa, but it's great to mention here if you haven't been. The B & B is close to the train station, gardens, museum, shopping, dining, and historic spots. Breakfast is delicious, and can be altered to suit vegetarian, vegan, lactose-free, and gluten-free diets. The dining room is a bright place to start the day. Aside from the cooked breakfast, refills on tea or coffee, toast, and cereal are offered. Martha is friendly and easy to chat with. She knows her town and country, and has recommendations if you have something in mind. I enjoyed my stay, and you will too. P.S. I sleep with ear plugs. You might want to bring some if you're a light sleeper as it's an old house.

What a fantastic day out! We drove down to Shropshire to meet our friends who suggested an…read moreexploration of the fantastic Hawkstone Park and Follies (to where, despite growing up in its backyard, they had never been either). There's lots to do here-- a hotel, outdoor activities like off-road driving, archery, balloon flights and, of course, hiking. Open year round, they have specialty activities around all the major holidays and there's something for the whole family. The hike through The Follies is pretty spectacular. The circular trail takes you through forests, terrific rock formations weathered from, well, weather it seems!-- and caves (you need a torch!). It's not an easy hike-- the uneven surfaces, steep inclines and equally steep (and narrow!) steps cut into the rocks are daunting. If you add rain into the mix (which we had), it makes for a bit of a precarious (and slippery!) adventure. But well worth it. There are picnic tables and benches dotted along the way-- and on a nice day, it is a fantastic place for a picnic-- if not only for the excuse to take a bit of a breather when you make it to the top. Estimated to be a three-hour round trip hike (depending on your pace and how long you stop to admire the plethora of incredible views), it's well worth your time. Plus, if you start early enough, you can make it back before the little tea room with veranda at the visitor's centre closes to reward yourself with some well-earned sweets and of course, the quintessential English cuppa (in a little teapot and everything). Well worth the trek-- we will be coming back here again!
