This past weekend I had decided to choose Cask Nyc for the location of my birthday brunch. I had seen previous reviews that the ambiance and atmosphere was modern with a hint of classical scenery. To my surprise I was sadly mistaken. Upon entering the venue we were quickly caught by surprise that despite having a reservation for a larger group, made several weeks in advance, we would only have a five minute window to order our meals. As most venues would have notified us of these time limits upon booking for a later brunch reservation. We were given zero notice in advance. Despite this we had still quickly made our orders to adhere to the kitchen's policies. Our waiter had sat us down and sloppy dispensed our eating utensils widely across our table and then to further the experience not even offer or bring water to the table. We still remained respectful, yet the unwelcoming nature of the staff and and lack of uncouth nature being displayed towards our party. When the food had arrived to the table another waiter had raised his voice several times while distributing our meals instead of simply having the decency for us to express which meals belonged to who. Our food seemed to be prepared by the end of day scraps from the kitchen that were left out to be dry, cold, and ill prepared.Unfortunately one of the meals were undercooked and instead of kindly offering to bring out a fresh plater without squabble our waiter continued to state that it was simply meant to be that way. Towards the end of our experience we were left feeling cheated and disappointed by the treatment here at Cask. I was meeting my friend here for lunch and ordered the Pat LaFrieda burger which was pretty good but the fries were mediocre at best. However, the Happy Hour drinks are worthy of taking note of, especially the Blood Orange Jalapeño Margarita. This seems to be their signature cocktail and it's easy to see why- has a unique (and great) taste and definitely is strong as well. I've always walked past this place and seen the outdoor seating full of people but never thought to stop by until a friend asked me to dinner here recently. The interior is larger than I expected and has a great ambiance due to the wooden interior and dim lighting. The menu has a little bit of everything so everyone can find something they enjoy. For a cocktail, try their blood and spice. It mimics a spicy margarita but with some added fruit and is not too sweet or too spicy. The Brussels sprouts are to die for. They may not be healthy at all but I'm just going to pretend I didn't know they were fried. The ahi tuna tower is also a great, and fresh, option for an appetizer if you're looking for something lighter. I recommend passing on the fries though. They were definitely lacking flavor and very soft. Personally, a crunchier, maybe even double fried, waffle fry with some seasoning on it is more preferable. I loved my veggie burger and appreciate that it was house made and not a frozen one from Whole Foods. I had been curious about Cask Bar & Kitchen for years - somehow always considering it for birthday drinks and other occasions, but never actually winding up there. So, when I needed to find a bar for a work happy hour in the Murray Hill area, my mind immediately thought of it as our destination. I reserved a table through Yelp without knowing much about their set-up. When I arrived and checked in, I was told that our table was not adjacent to the bar on the main floor, but was actually in their small bar room in the basement I was not sure what to expect as I descended the stairs, but I was greeted with a small, quiet space with 3 large booths and a good sized bar. We had one of the booths, which even came with our own server, despite the nearly empty room. Not having done much research on Cask's offerings prior to the event, the thought crossed my mind that they might not offer happy hour specials, but, thankfully, that was not the case. There were very reasonable discounts on select appetizers, beers, wines, and cocktails. I wound up ordering the Blood Orange Jalapeno Margarita, a tart and spicy blend of jalapeno tequila, orange liqueur, fresh lime juice, and blood orange puree. The drink was well-balanced and not overly sweet. In fact, I liked it so much that I wound up ordering a second round in a relatively brief time frame...The $8 price point only added fuel to my fire. From the friendly service to the comfortable and varied seating options to the delicious happy hour offerings, Cask Bar & Kitchen was perfect for our event and would even be an ideal spot for a weekend drink with a friend. Great gastro pub! I've come here 4 or 5 times for happy hour with coworkers, it's our go to HH place at this point, because it never disappoints. They have the most incredible pigs in a blanket, as well as their bacon that comes on this very fun display (the bacon is hanging from clips on a wooden display). The meatballs are always a hit, and their flatbreads are always good. We never have leftovers when we go here! I also like going on fridays during the summer when they have the oysters. I had the ribs with corn bread and slaw. It was a hefty portion and it was good. The ribs were meaty and had a sweet BBQ glaze. The cornbread was thick, fluffy and textured. And the slaw was a bit spicy. It had an extra Kick! The warm unlimited muffins that hit the table were yummy and I even got extra to take home from the server with my leftovers. Absolutely delicious! French toast is not too sweet and melts in your mouth. The bacon cheeseburger with a fried egg on top is an amazing savory choice but be sure to keep your silverware handy as the bun is a little small for all the brunch goodness on top of it. Now onto the atmosphere, for 1:45pm on a Saturday it was relatively quite and not necessary to make a reservation, but we did so anyways just to be on the safe side.
