We stayed in the small village of Aignay-le-Duc for a few days in October of 2012, and had the pleasure of stopping in to this charming little local grocery. It was just like something out of a book or show. The selection is small but quality, and there is only one register, usually staffed by the owner while a villager or or two hangs around, chatting about the weather.
I was looking for a bottle of wine to replace one that I'd purchased elsewhere but didn't like. The owner was incredibly kind and chatty and very interested in why I didn't like the bottle I'd brought in so of course he had to find out for himself. He ran to the back of the store and got a bottle opener and some plastic glasses off the store shelves, and we proceeded to have an little wine tasting right there at the cash register with the wine I'd brought and a couple bottles off the shelf.
There was a guy from the village hanging out at the store (did I mention the part about it being a small village?) who also lent his opinion about the wines and half an hour later we were on our way with a couple of fantasic bottles of Burgundy and some confusion over whether our heavily-accented French was American or Belgian!
Charming place. Please note: no English spoken. read more
