For example, a specific white Hard Rock Cafe shirt features the Parque de Bombas design on the back. I was quite surprised to learn that it was built in 1882 as a pavilion for an exhibition and later became Puerto Rico's first-ever fire station. For once, it looks nothing like a traditional fire station, and it didn't look that aged, so i suspect the city of Ponce ensures it is well maintained. It is free, but there is a donation pot just after the entrance. So, it doesnt hurt to give a few dollars to such a fine exhibit of firefighting history. On a side note, I parallel-parked on the street for free, as did a few locals. It was around the corner from Jalapeno's restaurant on a one-way street.

A Must-Visit for History Buffs!…read more For all the history buffs out there, I highly recommend visiting Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristóbal in San Juan, Puerto Rico! The history behind these fortresses is fascinating, the views are magnificent, and the park rangers are incredibly friendly, especially Javier. Javier is a fantastic storyteller who brings the history to life. And most importantly, he appreciates Pink Floyd! My husband was wearing a Pink Floyd T-shirt, which caught Javier's attention and gave us a fun little connection. What made our visit even more amazing was that we explored the two fortresses on different days, yet somehow, Javier happened to be working at each castle on two consecutive days. Talk about a coincidence! Even better, for just $20, you can visit both castles within 24 hours of purchasing your ticket, making it a great value for anyone interested in history, architecture, and breathtaking views. If you're visiting San Juan, don't skip these historic fortresses. Come for the history and the views, and you might just leave with a memorable story of your own!

Great visit to Castillo San Felipe del Morro on a Sunday morning…read more Arrived when they opened up at 9am and there was no wait to get in. Spectacular views of the castle itself as well the surrounding areas. Lots of history about the castle displayed through some great exhibits. Lots of walking, hills and some stairs throughout...so be sure to wear comfortable shoes. Great gift shop. Friendly and helpful staff throughout. Admission fee is $10, but grants access to Castillo San Felipe del Morro as well as the nearby Castillo San Cristobal up until the following day...so be sure to take advantage and visit both within that period. There is a reasonably-priced nearby parking garage (Ballaja Parking Garage) just a short walk to the entrance. There is also free street parking along Bulevar del Valle in the early morning hours.

There are several rooms to explore what is some really old furniture and information on the architectural features. You can also walk outside and enjoy sea vistas, but the outdoor air is not very well maintained. We were told it was the type of bed used during the times of Spanish Conquistadors. After all, the house was originally built (a wooden structure) for Juan Ponce de Leon. Although, he never got to live in it. His descendents lived in the rebuilt stone structure for 250 years until they sold it to the Spanish government. It was then transitioned to the US Military after the Treaty of Paris (1898). It became a museum in 1974. Today, it's also an event space for weddings and celebrations. I have to be honest. I was a little disappointed during this last visit. The garden and pathways are not being maintained regularly. I wanted to step down into the area overlooking the ocean, but there wasn't a clear enough pathway due to overgrown shrubs. I was fully prepared to pay the $5 admission fee to go inside, but decided not to after seeing the condition of the public garden in the front and back of the house. We visited on a Saturday, so it's not like it was some off day for lawn services. It's a highly anticipated touristy day. Looking back at it, we probably should have paid the fee and given an extra donation for a clearer path to the ocean view. I've read that the money is needed for restorations of this historical safe haven. Don't let this review discourage you. Just pick a day to visit before or after a wedding or garden event. Then you'll be sure to see it at its best. Because... why would you have your wedding here otherwise?

This is considered one of the most important archeological sites in the Antilles, and it's 10000%…read moreworth the visit! Admission is just $5 for adults and $3 for kids and seniors (65+). If you speak Spanish, you can start your visit by watching the 50-minute documentary. The film is from 1993 and feels long, but it is helpful to gain background on what they've found during the various excavations and research. I especially enjoyed hearing more information on the different petroglyphs we'd soon see. After that, check out the small museum, which features air conditioning as well as bilingual signage, to see some of the artifacts they've uncovered as well as learn some background. And finally, you can walk right where the Taínos once participated in games and ceremonies among the 10 stone-lined plazas and 21 petroglyphs. The grounds are beautifully maintained, and you can get up close to the stones (just don't touch them!). You'll also see the mountain that the Taínos viewed as sacred because it looks like a cemí. When we went, we pretty much had the place to ourselves, and it was a peaceful and fascinating experience for the approximately 1.5 hours we spent at the park. If you're Puerto Rican, interested in indigenous cultures, or just want to see some amazing petroglyphs, make sure to check out el Parque Ceremonial Indígena de Caguana during your next PR road trip!

The area where the umbrellas were has a high police presence because it is right in front of the governor's mansion. There was a huge Christmas tree up while I was there in mid January as well. Even though the umbrellas are long gone, it is still worth a peak. And it is right around the corner from the pigeon park.
