I visited Cárcamo de Dolores with my mom a week or so ago when we were in Mexico City on vacation…read more I'd wanted to visit for a while, but it's a little out of the way (located in the Second Section of Chapultepec), so I didn't make it until my third trip to Mexico City. Cárcamo de Dolores was built in 1951 as sump station (cárcamo translates to sump) for Mexico City's water system. When it was built, I guess they decided even a sump station should wow, so Diego Rivera painted a mural inside the building (it was originally an underwater mural, but the water has been drained so we can better see the mural) and designed a mosaic fountain statue outside the building. Cárcamo de Dolores now serves as small museum (and is part of the Museum of Natural History and Environmental Cultural). There's a nominal fee to visit, and you won't spend that much time here (it's very small and you just walk in and see the mural and read a couple of informational plaques and then head out to keep exploring what else Chalpultepec has to offer), but it's a cool stop if you're in the area (I walked over from Los Pinos, but it's also quite near some Barragán sites, too), if you're a big nerd for Rivera, and or if you've been to Mexico City a few times and are looking for something new or different from past trips. I got some great photographs, and I'm glad I was finally able to visit.
