Pro/cons of Casa Tortuga:
Pros
* The four cenotes that one is allowed to swim in are are intrinsically nice and the water in those four seems to be clean (see note below on the mysterious fifth cenote, however).
* It isn't that far (30-40 minutes) from most anywhere you would be staying while in Tulum (and closer if you are at the Dreams resort)
* They are safety-conscious (life vests for all, tour guides who emphasize watching your head, not diving, etc.)
Cons
* It is a tourist trap. The overlay of cement walkways, zip-liners, plastic everything, tequila and hot dog vendors, absurdly priced digital photos and tour guides who don't really add anything by way of context or knowledge just makes the whole place look and feel cheap and sad.
* Nothing about the crowd (neither the patrons nor the employees/vendors) is exclusive, funky, or cool in any way -- or have any of that magical Tulum vibe. It is like a second- (or really third-) rate theme park.
* One of the cenotes (near the kayak area) is closed to swimming, for what looks and smells like sewage run-off -- uncomfortably close to the other cenotes and begging a lot of questions.
* There doesn't seem to be any quality control (our tour guide, Jesús, lost half of his 24-person group before the tour was over, because he would literally walk away unannounced). When asked about it, the manager, Tomás, seemed like he had heard the same complaint 5x that day, and could not care less.
Conclusion: Go to to one of the cenotes the locals go to, like Corazón, Kaan Luum or Sac Actún. Skip Casa Tortuga. read more
