My wife and I celebrated our elopement at Casa Escondida earlier this month and it was everything we could have hoped for and more! We live in the area and wanted a small, simple, and special ceremony in this beautiful landscape that we love. I'm so grateful to have stumbled upon Casa Escondida's elopement packages through some late night googling. Ernesto helped to plan the perfect celebration for us and our 3 guests. I especially appreciated how open and considerate Ernesto was of us as a queer couple in the planning of the event. He didn't make any assumptions when it came to pronouns, flowers, or the names we would call each other as a married couple. He made sure to ask first which was so thoughtful and made us feel even more at ease and sure of our choice. My friend found this super cute bed and breakfast in the Chimayo area and we were able to book Casita Escondido Suite which was a cozy, one-bedroom adobe suite right next to the main house complete with a kiva fireplace (my favorite part!!!) My friend took the queen bed in the main room while I slept on the comfortable day bed in the sitting room. Our room also had a kitchen area which we used to make some nighttime tea. In the morning we enjoyed breakfast in the main building. Coffee, juice, fruit bowl, and southwest quiche. It is no wonder Casa Escondida Bed & Breakfast is often rated the number one bed and breakfast in Northern New Mexico. Personally, my only 'complaint' was we called in advance to ensure we could be on property early AND that there was reliable wifi as my friend needed to log on Zoom for tutoring. Unfortunately, the wifi was not reliable at all and Zooming was not a possibility. Hopefully it has since been resolved. I'd give a negative 5. No wifi. We tried from various places. Husband fell on his back trying to turn off lights from ceiling with string...it got stuck. He fell against the tall armoire with glass. No wi fi to reach owner, Huber, or Emergency, if necessary. Tub was not fit for accessibility. Text messages came through when we finally got through more than an hour later to Huber. We left, and no response or concern from owner. They do not qualify to meet standards to be in BBB so can't put a complaint, but will contact Attorney General Office...Contacted credit card company for dispute of charges. This place is pure magic. Came here for a party last summer and I was so enamored, I came back in the winter. The energy is calm and relaxed, yet so welcoming, the staff will chat with you about whatever you want or need with helpful ideas about the area - or - they will let you be, if that's what you prefer. The food was exquisite both times; often there were fresh cookies or some other delicious thing coming out of the oven and handed around spontaneously. Each room has been put together with care and it shows - comfy beds, good water pressure, all the small things that make it or break it for me. We stayed here 4 nights, using it as a jumping off location to explore the region: the high road to Taos, Nambe badlands, Abiquiu, Ghost Ranch, Pueblos, etc. It's a great location, very quiet and dark - the stars jump out at you. And it's close to a great restaurant (5 min drive). Ernesto and Barbi were very welcoming and helpful, with lots of information. The breakfasts were fantastic, every morning a different experience. And more than we could eat. Our room was pretty small, but comfortable, with a good shower. But we spent most of our time in the main living room, where there was tea and coffee and a guest fridge where we could keep snacks and leftovers. WiFi was fine everywhere as was cell reception. We would definitely go back again. (I read the one bad review, by a "travel professional" and they couldn't have been more off-base.) read more

I travel for a living and have stayed in hundreds of hotels and B&Bs. This review is in light of comparison to others in the Arizona/New Mexico/Colorado area. This place changed hands in February 2022 and has gone straight to the dogs. HOSPITALITY IS TOTALLY ABSENT A. At Casa Escondida (CE) there is no cell service for email or phone calls. To make a call you have to go in the lobby and borrow their land line. THIS IS IMPORTANT FOR SAFETY AND NAVIGATION AND IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM THAT VISITORS SHOULD BE ALERTED TO BEFORE BOOKING. B. If you get here after dark, you will never find the place. There are NO lights on the road signs and none on their entrance way. The directions on their website are hopeless. After an hour of looking for it I nearly gave up, but stopped at a neighbor's house and they shared my frustration with kindness and gave better directions. Good luck finding it. C. No lights in the parking lot; feels totally unsafe. D. I finally arrived at 5:45 (they're supposed to be there until 6pm. They weren't there, and the doors were locked and you can't call them (no cell service in this area). I bashed on the windows and the doors and finally got another guest's attention in the back kitchen to let me in. In the morning, the owner told me, "well, the doors are supposed to be unlocked." Clearly they weren't, and even if they were - do you feel safe in a hotel where anyone could wander in? WHY WEREN'T THEY IN THEIR OFFICE AS POSTED UNTIL 6PM? E. I was in the "heart" of the facility, and it was dismal. It was cold and unwelcoming. At 11pm before I crashed for the night and already in my nightie, I went to take my meds, but guess what? THEY DON'T STOCK GLASSES OR CUPS IN THEIR ROOMS. I had to drink from my hands to get my meds down! The owners had a long line of excuses in the morning why they don't put glasses (or bottled water) in the rooms. Seriously?? They said "well you should have walked to the kitchen." Seriously?? In my nightgown??? F. Breakfast was nearly terrible, like it was cooked by a 12 year old. Hard, cold inedible brownie and a hard cold frittata. People who say their breakfasts at the CE are "yummy" do not get out a lot. It was inedible. G. For the price (low to mid $200's) you expect hospitality, warmth, good food, and basic needs met. This B&B fails on all counts. H. They do say there is a dog on the property, but they did NOT say it was a PITBULL. My BFF back in the 80's had a 4 year old daughter was killed when her face was chewed off by a neighbor's pitbull. The police shot it, but the neighbors faked being perplexed and said "but pitbulls are such sweet dogs." Had I known there was an unleashed pitbull roaming around I would not have booked here. Chimayo is a great little place to visit, but I strongly encourage travelers to make room reservations in Santa Fe. You'll save money, get a great breakfast somewhere and be able to drink a glass of water at night. read more

I stayed here during a work trip and found the place to be almost what I expected. The main house and the Uno Garden Room were comfortable and well decorated. The WiFi does not work in the room. The solution offered by the owner was that I could sit in the dining room to use the WiFi. It worked, but made the experience awkward. I feel like the issue probably could have been resolved if someone from the staff had been onsite when I arrived before 4pm our any time during the evening. The staff / owner were completely unhelpful with helping to resolve my issue. The situation got more awkward in the morning when the gal who works at the B & B confronted me about the challenges. She was pretty aggressive. I offered to leave so the conversation could end. I ended up hanging around for breakfast and it was pretty good. Definitely a step above a Continental breakfast at other spots. I'm not sure there was an opportunity to share dietary restrictions, though, and that would be helpful. The place was generally clean and we only had issues with the gritty floor and the left over can of dog food that my dog found under the sink. He enjoyed the treat... but you know. The bed was amazingly comfortable and the sheets were nice. Speaking of the nice sheets, everything in the B&B was for sale. I'm guessing it's because people jack their stuff all the time?? Bottom line: If you are looking to unplug and unwind this is probably a great place to do that. If you are looking to buckle down on your computer there are probably better options. read more

I decided to spring a last minute "spring break" trip for my family. While booking I noticed I didn't book my 2 children as guests.The mistake I probably made was not adding their names as guests. After reflecting on this point, I decided to call the number available to confirm the 2 children. I didn't get an answer so I decided to text message the "text" number explaining the situation. I didn't receive a response but assumed everything was all good (more on this later). We arrived around 3:45pm to a completely empty property, which was nice. Finding it wasn't hard, I did briefly see on the website saying not to use google maps and to use their directions. The main area was set up nice, the decorations were charming and I felt like I was welcomed even though there wasn't a person there. There was a nice living area with fireplace to hang out, a nice kitchen area with everything you could possibly need, and a large seating area for breakfast. There was a really nice courtyard, but my wife and I were wishing there was a hot tub. Would be very nice with snow on the ground. After looking around we found our check in instructions on the front little desk area. Check in time was posted from 4-6pm but I don't think there was a physical person there for check in. It would've been nice had we needed more towels or needed to make an adjustment to their reservation like we did. We booked the Sunroom because we were with our 10yr old and 7yr old and thought having the private entrance and patio would good so we didn't bother the other guests. The room was very charming, decorated in a southwest style that fit the surrounding area. Lots of windows in this room as well as French doors that opened to the private patio. The bathroom was a good size and was done in what I would call Spanish style. We pretty much just unloaded our stuff and then explored the property and found this really cool old Adobe structure on the property. I posted a pic of it as well. I couldn't help but think this amazing structure is being under utilized. I could imagine it as a venue space for parties or weddings that want a Adobe theme. The We then took off to go get dinner. When we returned it was dark out but the parking area was lit very well. When we got back into the room, we decided to go get an after dinner cup of tea from the kitchen. Like I said earlier, anything you could need is available to you. We started to relax for the evening and inspected the room. I hate to say it but the room could've been cleaned better. The property is a little rustic, but the room looked like it had gotten a once over rather than a good covid cleaning. The grout was missing from the tile in a lot of places. The bathroom sink needed some work, the grout was falling apart behind the faucet and the faucet felt like it was about to snap off. The water was seemed to be very hard water, there were stains on the glasses and in the morning the coffee had some stuff floating on top. I'm not sure if there was a water softener but there should be. There isn't a TV in the room, but there is WiFi and a laptop available for use in the living area. The property is SOOOOOO quiet at night. Amazingly quiet. The sunroom has an adjoining room, and those guests showed up around 9:30 pm and made a little noise. That was annoying but once they got settled it was serene. The sheets (which are available for sale) were amazing. We awoke in the morning around 6:30, just enough time to get freshened to grab coffee at 7am. The top of the coffee pot looked like it hadn't been cleaned in quite a while. The hard water doesn't help. The coffee did taste good, had a slight cinnamon taste. When I walked into the kitchen for breakfast, Belinda asked how many in my party. I said I had my wife and 2 kids and she replied "oh, I thought the reservation was for 2". I then explained the booking issue I had and I did feel like she was passively aggressively challenging me. I was apologetic to her and she said it was fine but my wife walked in right as we were having our discussion and must have picked up on something because then she started arguing with her. We eventually sat down and another couple with kids walked in and had THE EXACT SAME ISSUE. they booked just like I did and somehow the 2 kids were missed while booking. Belinda served us a fresh fruit cup to start with cantaloupe, grapes and kiwi. Shortly after she served a baked French toast with an orange glaze. Accompanying it was slices of honey glazed ham and orange juice. The atmosphere was nice, and talking to the other guests of breakfast was nice too. Very good breakfast and very filling. Overall Casa Escondida is a great place to spent a couple nights. The property is tucked away off the main road, is very charming and peaceful. You can tell Belinda cares about her guests and their experience. We would stay again and recommend to our friends and family. read more

Casa Escondida is now under new ownership, with Kim as the Innkeeper and Resident Local Guide. I would have loved to stay when Belinda had the place, as her reviews were exceptional, but Kim has carried on the tradition very, very well. Service, Style and open warm Friendship!!! We spent two nights in the Vista Room, with a huge deck off the room and it was all we hoped for. Plenty of space for all our bags - and we don't travel light! Peace and quiet!!! We used the Casa Escondida as a base from which to explore Taos, Santa Fa and the local area - including the fabulous Rancho de Chimaya! Frankly didn't need to eat away from the B&B, as the breakfasts were large and amazing. Aside from being a great innkeeper - Kin is a COOK! My only negative was that the price was a tad on the high side for what was provided. I could have claimed the discount offered on their webpage, but chose not to. read more

My wife and I stayed at Casa Escondida for two nights, and loved it. We wanted quiet and relaxation. We got it! The B&B is replete with New Mexican charm in its little private corner of the village of Chimayo. We spent a lot of time watching birds, and some welcome rain, from the covered patio outside our room. Chimayo is handy to the High Road to Taos for explorers. The highlights of the weekend were two marvelous home-cooked breakfasts that were truly exceptional. Casa Escondida seems to be in transition with new-ish owners and we expect there'll be some improvements ahead. It isn't swanky or exclusive, but is intimate, rustic, and comfortable. read more

Staying at Casa Escondida Bed & Breakfast was the BEST experience I have ever had in terms of hospitality, cleanliness, and being genuine in culture and feeling at home. My boyfriend and I have a regular problem with being treated as lesser because of our young age (22 & 24). When we arrived, the owner was more than accommodating in every aspect. She gave us a choice of room and let us know the price difference. I booked the room on Priceline, but she let me know next time to call and she'll give you a better rate! We chose are room which was decorated for the maximum "at home" feel. I was impressed by every corner I looked at. It was relaxing, yet fit the classic New Mexico vibe. The bed was very comfortable and clean! The shower, floors, and sink, were very clean as well. Now, for the bed and breakfast... BEST EVER! The owner greeted us in the morning and had us sit at a table of our choice with a great outdoor view surrounding us with a seasonal fruit cup and orange juice at our table. She also had lemon poppy seed bread at our side, which ended up being to die for!!! She brought out a breakfast soufflé and served us in very cute dishes. IT WAS AMAZING. The people surrounding us were very friendly and they said that they stay there every time they come to New Mexico (they are from Texas!). I have no doubt in my mind that I will return here. I would go to this area, just to stay here. It's that good! read more

We stayed in the casita for a few nights and found it clean with a comfortable bed and it had a nice little private deck. The floor plan was a little odd but only adds to the atmosphere. The air conditioning was not the greatest but had a ceiling fan and we were lucky enough to have a little cooler weather and slept without the air conditioning with the screen doors only , we felt safe and secure with the watch dogs Millhouse and Nelson, lol. Very relaxing/quiet B&B located in the remote hills of Chimayo... you won't find any TVs here and there's only 1 house phone (cell phones don't work up here). It was a little too remote for my family and I in the evening (there are ZERO street lights) but still Casa Escondida was very warm and friendly to us. We have stayed at Casa Escondida for the last 3 years (2017-2019) on our annual journey to Santa Fe and have loved it each time. It's out of the way of the bigger city feel of Santa Fe, so it's a great place to go after walking all day and just relax in the country. Be prepared that this B&B is a bit hard to find, and you will likely not be able to use your cell phone, and the wi-fi was spotty at best. I would have preferred a TV, but I got over it. Overall, the breakfast was good and the stay was nice. The walls between the rooms were a little too thin, to the point that the person snoring in the next room kept us up most of one of the nights. We are visiting from CA and we loved it! Sometimes life gets crazy and you need a break from it all. No cell reception. But they do offer their main room phone to make calls to anywhere. It was nice sitting and having coffee and watching the view. And their breakfast is so yummy! GLUTEN FREE too! If you let them know in advance, they will accommodate you. This is the cutest B&B I've ever seen, and I do quite a bit of travel. Clean and cozy, with a southwestern charm, but not so overbearing that a native New Mexican finds it corny. I did like this place though I see why people had a hard time finding the place. The directions were confusing and the staff was not that helpful in terms of helping to find it. Once I got there it was clean, quiet and the breakfast was nice. The only other downside was that the bathroom was not in the room like we expected but it was not a shared bathroom. i stayed here on a stop while driving across the country from san francisco to nyc, and while the stay was pleasant enough i'm docking 2 stars for: 1. being difficult to find-we kept turning around and driving on deserted roads! 2. telling me that they had a private casita available when they didn't. however, they did make a reservation for us at an amazing authentic restaurant in town (that was also a little confusing to find) and we relaxed in their lovely hot tubs right outside of our rooms! i think i have a hard time with b & b's in general...maybe it's the city girl thing? either way i would definitely recommend this to travelers, but maybe not return myself. read more

Looked for a B&B that was near Santa Fe and found this place Glad I did! stayed here for one night and it was everything that it was described on their website! It was a full house the night we stayed. But all the rest of the guests were also friendly and enjoyed getting to know some if them. Very friendly staff! One staff member named Rebecca was so sweet when we arrived! Very helpful showed us around the property. She even offered to take us to the nearby restaurant since we were unfamiliar to the area and wanted to have dinner! It was time for her to end her day of work and I'm sure she wanted to get home to her family but she offered to drive us to the restaurant so we wouldn't get lost. That was really nice of her. This place had lots of charm and warmth feeling about it. If you are in need of a place to go for relaxation, peace and solitude this is the place for you! Rooms are nice and clean. Breakfast was good and there was plenty. Cell service isn't great out there but they offer their land line phone if you need to make calls and they do have Wifi with a laptop available. My favorite part of this place was sitting outside on their poarch with a cup of hot chocolate watching the different birds nearby! So simple but well needed in times when our lives get too busy for us. Oh and their Biscochitos added a yummy touch to our room! read more

This is our second time visiting Casa Escondida and we love it! The staff have all been incredibly friendly. The rooms are cozy, comfortable, and wonderfully rustic. We enjoy being out in the country, a bit removed from the city. The breakfast has been consistently delicious as well. My wife Heather and I just spent our fifth wedding anniversary here and found it to be absolutely perfect! The location was ideal - quiet but close to Santa Fe and not too far from Taos, plus we found that Chimayo has a wonderful charm, especially at El Santuario de Chimayo. We stayed at the Vista Room and just loved being able to lay outside on our private balcony under a blanket enjoying champagne and chocolates while watching the shooting stars at night. Other than a very creaky floor, the room was just spectacular, beautifully decorated and very calming. The bed was very comfortable too. Breakfast was excellent too, very filling and tasty. We also enjoyed the use of the outside hot tub each evening. Everyone was extremely helpful and friendly. WiFi was handy too, for uploading photos of how much fun we were having onto Facebook! This place was not what I expected. First off the neighborhood is undisirable, run down houses and very sketchy. As we turned down the road that the bed and breakfast was on an Indian lady that appeared to be drunk started screaming at us for no apparent reason. We were shocked but had to continue down the road because it was 10 inches deep in snow and we were afraid are car would get stuck if we tried turning around. Upon arriving at the bed and breakfast nobody was there. Not a car or person in site. We sat in are car trying to contact the hotel with little to no cell phone service for approx an hour once we got a hold of Belinda the owner she said she wasn't there but it was unlocked and had a lot of cameras and we could go on inside. The house was gorgeous... room was nice although no tv it had 3 beds so each of my children and my husband and I had a bed. That didn't last long as soon as my son saw a spider in his bed he was done. There was no way him or his little sister were sleeping in those beds so we all slept in the queen size bed....4 of us with the lights on. Woke up in the morning still nobody there...left without ever getting a breakfast and then was charged an additional hidden fee of $20 per child when we had originally booked through a 3rd party and the bed and breakfast stated it slept 4. I would have been fine with paying the extra $20 per child if we had breakfast but thought it was rude of them to charge when they didn't even have to make breakfast. read more

My wife and I had an absolutely wonderful time at the Casa Encondida. The rooms were very well maintained, the breakfast was delicious, and the staff (Micheline and Belinda) were attentive to anything we requested. Belinda texted excellent directions to us, so it was easy to find, and Micheline prepared a tasty breakfast and great coffee and tea.
