A friend of my wife is Brazilian and went to university in Floripa. The first recommendation she…read moremade was go to Ostradamus for the oysters. Of course we heeded her advice and went for an early (by Brazilian standards) Saturday dinner there. We definitely weren't disappointed, although at their prices, I would be more pissed if I didn't like it. We started off with a dozen locally-farmed oysters on the half shell. As an American, I am used to eating them with cocktail sauce and a lot of horseradish to give them a kick. The Brazilians down them with a little lemon and hot sauce, which was good enough for me. They were about as fresh as you can get, probably pulled right out of the bay just hours ago. For our main, we had the Brazilian version of paella: It had rice, octopus, oysters, and mushrooms. I can't remember the name but it tasted amazing. My wife, who is very finicky, loved it. We paired it off with a good bottle of Argentine Malbec. The wine list was diverse but I wouldn't call it particularly comprehensive. Ostradamus's decor was modern but still functional. I loved the way the dining room was surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows as if perched right on top of a dock (it was). This was an upscale restaurant, but not to the point where it is stifling. The ambiance still had a relaxed casualness to it, at least to the early dinner crowd around 8p. There was nothing pretentious about the restaurant, a nice break from similar restaurants back home in DC. Service was good but it could have been a bit more attentive. Overall I give Ostradamus a glowing 4.75 stars. The only places I knocked them down that quarter point was that the waitstaff could have been more responsive, and the restaurant is a hike from just about anywhere in Floripa. However, you'd be hard-pressed to beat the food and view anywhere on the island. Even if you're not hungry, I'd recommend stopping in just to try the oysters and a cocktail while watching the tide roll away (thanks, Otis Redding).

The staff was super helpful and a couple even attempted some English. I tried some fried shrimp with sauce and a tall beer, excellent. And then paired it with some smoked oysters with cheese, plenty of food and plenty of flavor. The standout honestly though for me was the fish broth they brought me to start. 10/10 will be back

Went here for lunch during the week and the place was empty. The prices are on the high side since the restaurant is located in a very expensive area of the island and also they have got a few awards by Veja. The food is not terrible but not worth the price tag. The shrimp with white sauce was just meh but the fried and grilled shrimp were delicious. The service was average. Servers were not too friendly and it took a long time for the food to come despite the place been empty.

The Toca de Jurere in the Centro was closed for renovations at the time and since I was in town, I needed to get my fix in. My fix being the paella and the Bacalhau de Toca. At this time of the year, we needed reservations but we were able to score some earlier in the evening. The main problem that I have with this location is that it's so far out of the way and it's really really hard to find. Seeing how we were staying in the center of Floripa, the cab ride was quite long and seeing how it was New Years, the ride back was even longer. The good thing was that the food was fantastic and completely filled me up. I need to take a small nap after my girlfriend and I destroyed the Bacalhau de Toca and a bottle of wine. However, we did make it out for New Years later in the evening. For my review on the food, it is pretty much the same as the one in the center so I won't re-hash it but you can read it at: http://www.yelp.com/biz/restaurante-toca-de-jurer%C3%AA-florian%C3%B3polis I'll give the brief synopsis here: 1) Bacalhau de Toca is my go to dish here as the fish is cooked in a broth in a clay pot. 2) Paella is my second go to dish here 3) Bolinhos de bacalhau are a very good appetizer 4) I come to Toca de Jurere every time I am in town 5) I have never been disappointed by the food

First of all. The location of this restaurant is a bit hard to find if you don't know the area…read more However, this is a place that you need to go to. I've eaten fish all over the world and this restaurant serves some of the best fish dishes. I only pretty much only get 2 plates here whenever I am in town. I either get the paella for 2 or the Bacalhau de Toca (cod dish) for 2. The bacalhau de Toca is always my first choice. They cook the cod in a tomato broth with onions, tomatoes, hard boiled eggs, potatoes and olives in a clay pot. The flavor is fantastic and the fish is tender and melts like butter when you bite into it. They give you a side plate of rice (the rice changes each time that I go but it's not white rice) to go with this. The mixture of everything together is unbelievable. The paella plate is gigantic and is enough dinner for like about 4 days. I've tried a lot of the main courses (prato principal) here but those two are my favorite and my go to dishes. For an appetizer, I suggest either the oysters or the bolinhos de bacalhau (Deep Fried balls of cod). They give you lime to go with the bolinhos de bacalhau and the breading they use is fresh and light. This restaurant is, in my opinion, the best in Florianopolis. They are not open for dinner on Sundays and not open on Mondays so schedule wisely. I will say that you will be paying quite a bit when you come here but it is one of the places to splurge.
