At the recommendation of my dentist, I went to Dr. Cary Miles/Dr. Stephen Gelfman's office for oral surgery. I've dodged getting my wisdom teeth removed for years because nearly every person I know has had some sort of bad experience with it, ranging from unpleasant to downright traumatizing. So I was a little nervous going into the appointment. But from the very beginning, the process was top notch. First of all, I had initially scheduled only a consultation. The office staff called me and asked if I wanted to go ahead and just book the extractions in the same appointment, so that I wouldn't have to come back a second time (and pay for a second visit). When I got to the office, the staff was kind and welcoming. I was given a detailed breakdown of what the cost would be, and told upfront that the x-rays I would be paying might potentially be covered by my insurance, and if that was the case, they would refund me. Dr. Gelfman did the extractions. His calm and matter-of-fact manner put me at ease, and patiently answered all of my questions. The extraction process was shockingly quick and painless. The most uncomfortable part is the novocaine, which is about the same as getting fillings done. The whole thing probably took only about 15 minutes from start to finish. I was given meds for pain, but I did not end up needing them. Had I known it would be like this, I would have gotten my wisdom teeth removed sooner. Also, I did end up getting refunded on the x-rays so even better. Would definitely recommend Dr. Gelfman. read more

I saw Dr. Miles last year and the experience has stuck with me so, although I'm not in the habit of leaving reviews, I'm going to leave one here. I'll start with the good stuff: the quality of care was good. Not stellar, but good - did the job. Which I appreciated. Sadly, the way money piece was, to use a word, problematic. Like many people, I don't have dental insurance and so went to great lengths with Dr. Miles' very helpful staff - and Dr. Miles - to get what I was led to believe was an accurate cost range for the work that was to be done. Imagine my surprise when, following my visit, the bill was four times the high end of the range I was given. It was at this point that the office staff suddenly got less helpful. As they had my credit card on file, I was powerless to stop them from charging me the full amount. So if you're got great dental insurance - or an unlimited supply of cash - you'll do OK here - they really are nice people and the care is fine. Otherwise, my advice is to steer clear. read more

After following my usual practice of delaying a tooth extraction for about five years, my regular dentist advised me "It's time to see Dr. Cary Miles again." Dr. Miles performed my last extraction in 2014, and as I Yelped at the time, it was a five-star amazingly pleasant experience. So I scheduled a consultation with Dr. Miles, and he agreed that my tooth (#19) had to be pulled. He also advised me on options to replace the tooth later, possibly by installing an implant depending upon the bone density in my lower left jaw. As usual, as I approached the date "to go under the pliers," I was a nervous wreck. But I made my way to his office located at MOSAIC on East 61st Street on extraction day, and turned myself over to Dr. Miles' skilled professionalism and pleasing "chair side manner." Aided by a very friendly assistant, Cindy, Dr. Miles prepared me for the operation with three needle pricks in my jaw beneath the problem tooth. As was my experience back in 2014, this was the only pain I felt during the entire extraction process. With classic rock and rhythm & blues playing softly in the background, he started poking around the problem tooth. While he worked -- and with a cotton wad in my mouth and a rubber plug jammed between my upper and lower jaws to comfortably keep my mouth open -- we began to debate whether Curtis Mayfield had sung with an R&B group before going solo with "Super Fly." Before we could figure out that Curtis Mayfield had performed as lead singer with The Impressions, I heard two distinct soft clicks, and my tooth was out. Dr. Miles proceeded to clean out my lower jaw where the tooth had resided for nearly 60 years and installed a bone graft to hopefully prepare my jaw for a future implant to replace the lost tooth in a few months. The procedure was complete, and after a celebratory "elbow bump," I asked Dr. Miles where my pulled tooth was. One of the technicians said it had already been thrown out, so we immediately headed over to the "toxic waste" container and retrieved it for a souvenir of my latest visit to Dr. Miles... and he graciously autographed the plastic sleeve into which my tooth was slipped for safe-keeping. I can't recommend Dr. Miles, his dental technicians and entire office staff more highly for - dare I say? - a very enjoyable, satisfying and painless afternoon experience. I was able to see Dr Miles very quickly, and he could not have been more professional or helpful. He is excellent at what he does. Beware ! After a visit with Dr. Miles for a root canal I was left with an infection that I had to have treated by another dentist after not being able to get an appointment to see him. Came a few weeks ago for 4 wisdom tooth extractions and a frenulum clip and my pressure was too high. I paid the fee for the IV sedation and left. Now my pressure is lower and I'm able to come back for the procedure and they wanna charge me again and call it co-insurance. HELLO, you did nothing but take vitals and stuck a needle in my hand. You do realize I coulda brought in my own needles and even my own pressure cuff. That wasn't worth $200 and I should not have to pay again. With this address, charging me again will NOT help pay for the paint, nor a door knob in here. I completely understand that you must make money, but is this really the way? Perhaps many of their clients pay outta pocket. The staff is great and Cary is a fine doctor, but they've gotta do better with their billing. They take your health and dental insurance info, then tell you that medical won't cover the sedation. If you know that, why do you need all of this information? I read the positive reviews and wondered if I was the only one who was not happy with dr miiles. after reading the negative ones I see I am correct. he is passive aggresive. 4 epicoectomies failed. then he gets to pull them out and do implants. he did a successful implant for me. but was not forthcoming with a lot of imformation and charged me for things without explantion. when I asked for an explanation he got extremely defensive. my last bad experience with him. he told me I was going to have an uncovering of my front tooth and that the screw would extend out a little. but in the end it did not extend out and I knew from common sense that here was a reason for that although I did not inquire. already having many negative experiences with him, I inquired why the screw didn't stick out and he got very defensive and screamed at me. of course the reason was he didn't have the right length available. guess he doesn't care enough to make sure he has the right equipment for his patients even though we pay a mint for his services. luckily my dentist was able to replace with the correct length. I worried the entire time which was a full year about my situation as he never once told me things would turn out well. so I figured things must be not going well. in the end it was 100 percent successful but I would never ever go to him again. don't you think it would be appropriate for an oral surgeon to tell their patients "not to worry, you will look just fine". after my last visit, he did not even tell me that he wants to know how the crown came out. (the final step) this is done by the dentist. basically he just couldn't care less. don't think I will be going back!! read more

Dr. Miles was highly unprofessional and condescending. When I asked him to explain the details of a procedure, he lost his temper and even swore at me. He was vague about his decision-making and would not explain any evidence-based rationale. Some quotes include "I will not change my philosophy for YOU, I am the doctor" and "it's a f*****g tooth." It felt as though he was rushed, which may be due to the fact that my appointment was at 5 PM. I went home with a numb face and without having my procedure done due to how uncomfortable he made me. Fifteen years ago I needed a wisdom tooth extracted, and the removal experience by my regular dentist was extremely unpleasant and excruciating. So when my new dentist advised that I needed to have another wisdom tooth removed in 2012, I avoided the procedure for two years. After experiencing increasing discomfort over the past six months, I finally decided to comply with my dentist's instructions and get my tooth extracted. Based on a recommendation from my dentist, I reluctantly made an appointment with Dr. Cary Miles at MOSAIC (Manhattan Oral Surgery and Implant Center). I set-up my appointment over the phone with Julie, who was very capable and patient in answering my questions about the procedure, insurance coverage and possible after-effects of the extraction, and generally did her best to calm my fears about my impending dental adventure. Two days before my scheduled appointment I received a confirmation call from Sonia at MOSAIC, who likewise tried her best to allay my concerns. When I arrived at the office on the day of the event, I was impressed with the attentive staff who guided me through the mandatory form-filling-out and insurance verification process. Once completed, I was introduced to a high-tech "panoramic" x-ray camera device that moved around my head to take a wide-angle picture of all of my teeth and root structure. The technician took a few minutes to review the x-ray with me, explaining the position of my tooth requiring extraction as well as its root structure. I was next guided into an attractive, spotless and modern-looking operating room simply furnished with "movable" chair that could be positioned flat for the surgery. The attending dental technician (sorry... I forgot to ask her name in my high anxiety state) provided an overview of how the process would be performed, which again helped alleviate my fears and relax me to a certain extent. Shortly after that Dr. Miles entered the room. Sensing my anxiety, he combined humor with professionalism to outline how he would approach the extraction, advising that the most discomfort I would endure would be the four pinpricks to anesthetize my upper jaw and pallet prior to the extraction. Despite his answer to my first question that he received his dental surgery credentials at "Bugs Bunny University" (which he later expanded to include New York University with a BA from Brandeis), he displayed an efficient, friendly and understanding "chairside manner." Once the novocaine kicked-in, Dr. Miles began his work. Other than a very slight crunching noise as he wiggled my tooth, there was absolutely no discomfort or pain as he quickly and efficiently performed the extraction. His periodic humming during the procedure helped reassure me that this was a man who enjoyed what he was doing, further alleviating my fear. The entire procedure was completed in what seemed like 15 minutes (although it was probably a little longer), and before I left, both Dr. Miles and the front office staff briefed me on post-extraction precautions I should take and alerted me to possible discomfort I could experience once the novocaine wore off. I was given a prescription for Oxycodone... just in case I experienced any pain. Overall, the entire experience was very positive, and dare I say, "pleasant." I walked the 11 blocks back to my home, but not before stopping at my local Walgreens to have my prescription filled, "just in case." I was feeling so good about my dental extraction experience that I even stopped off at my barber for a haircut before returning home. It's been nearly 24 hours since I went "under the pliers," and so far, I haven't experienced any post-operative pain or discomfort. I also had a very good night's sleep. I'm very grateful that my regular dentist recommended Dr. Miles and MOSAIC, and I'm extremely pleased with the professionalism of MOSAIC's office staff and the skills demonstrated by Dr. Miles. I absolutely highly recommend both Dr. Miles and MOSAIC if anyone needs a tooth extracted. Who knew that Bugs Bunny U. could produce such a capable dental surgeon! read more

A couple of weeks back, I had a dental check up at Slim Dental and was informed that I have 2 impacted wisdom teeth which need removal. They recommended that I go see Cary Miles but noted that since my insurance does not require a referral, I could go anywhere. A week or so later, I was in intense pain and called the offices of Dr. Miles to schedule the nearest appointment. Unfortunately, that wasn't until 2 weeks later. I kindly requested that the receptionist check the schedule of his partner, Dr. Gelfman (who ALSO takes my insurance), but she outright REFUSED because Slim Dental sent me there for Dr. Carey. I pleaded with her that I cannot wait 2 weeks and that my insurance doesn't require referrals but she still refused, telling me that different dentists have different agreements with the dentists that refer patients. WHAT THE HELL DOES THAT EVEN MEAN?!?!? My insurance doesn't require a referral and I'm telling you I'm in intense pain. So in short, this is a practice that prioritizes kickbacks and favors ($$$) over a patients' well being. Very UNETHICAL. At the end, maybe it's all for the best as some of these reviews regarding wisdom teeth extraction indicate that...well...they aren't the smoothest of operators. read more

Dr. Miles has ethical issues. I went to him to have a tooth pulled. I was in the chair no more than 5 minutes. When I checked his billing, I saw that he had billed not only for tooth pulling, but for a sinus surgery! My co-pay was an extra $65 for his alleged surgery. No surgery was performed. When I confronted Dr. Miles, he agreed to remove the $65 for the surgery. But he billed it to the insurance!! Then, this year, when I tried to go there for another procedure, I was told by the dentist that he would not allow me back to his office. I called my insurance company, and yes, he did bill over $1000 to them for surgery, which they paid. I filed a financial complaint with the insurance company against Dr. Miles. He is now being investigated. If you go here, CHECK YOUR BILL CAREFULLY. But, I suggest you go elsewhere. read more

As a dentist with many dental problems in my mouth over the years, I have had lots of dentistry including oral surgery and Cary is incredible -- as a very skilled oral and maxillofacial surgeon and a very kind gentleman. He and his partner (Stephen Gelfman) are the oral surgeons I have referred my patients to for over 20 years. Dr Miles has taken out my son's four impacted wisdom teeth and Dr Gelfman has taken out teeth on my two daughters. No Need to Say More. This review is for Dr. Gelfman: I had 3 impacted wisdom teeth, and after a while the top and bottom ones on the left side started giving me some trouble. I went to see Dr. Gelfman at the suggestion of my regular dentist, and had a really positive experience. I initially scheduled a consultation with him, which included panoramic x-rays. During the consultation, Dr. Gelfman took his time to explain the x-rays and the pros and cons of the extraction process for my specific case. He was extremely patient and answered all of my questions honestly. He very thoroughly detailed all of my options so that I was well informed and knew exactly what to expect. I decided to go through with the extraction and scheduled another appointment. The week leading up to my appointment, I was extremely anxious. When I arrived for the procedure, I was shaking. His assistant guided me into the room, and was so pleasant that I immediately began to calm down. Dr. Gelfman was incredibly warm and friendly, and talked me through the entire process. He even made me laugh a few times. The extractions were done painlessly and super fast! Since I opted for novocaine only (laughing gas would have cost me $135.00 according to my insurance plan), I was shocked and relieved at how seamless and easy the entire process was. At the end of my visit, I was given an after-care package with instructions, and my prescriptions were called in immediately so they were ready for me to pick up within 10 minutes after leaving the office. Overall, I would 100% recommend Dr. Gelfman to others. Not even a little bit worried about getting the last one removed now. read more

I had to get a wisdom tooth extracted, and Dr. Miles did this for me in an expedient, yet informative, relatively pain-free, and caring way. I had 2 other wisdom teeth removed by a different oral surgery practice a while back, and they failed to notice a serious issue with my 4th wisdom tooth that Dr. Miles picked up on immediately and explained thoroughly after closely examining my x-rays. Due to his care and discernment, I avoided getting my 4th wisdom tooth removed unnecessarily. The tooth is not causing harm where it is, but removing it would seriously harm the molar next to it, and my sinuses on that side of my head. Yesterday I had my tooth pulled my Dr. Miles. It was the best tooth experience I ever had. I usually cry and cannot sit still during any of my dental visits. This was the best experience ever. I even cried for some x rays the other day someplace else. I hope I do not need any more teeth pulled but if I do I would come back in a heartbeat. I also may go back because I need some implants. If you'd like a painless extraction experience, you might want to go elsewhere. Went to this guy a while back to have a wisdom tooth pulled. I notified him that I often require really large amounts of local anesthetic to fully numb the surrounding tissue. As he gave me successive doses of whichever -caine he was using, I could still feel pain in the area he was attempting to numb. I told him this and he replied that he can't use any more b/c of the epinephrine added, which is ridiculous, b/c he could have easily and safely switched to another agent w/o epi. But what happened next made that seem positively sane. As he was poking around and I continued to have sensation surrounding the tooth, he ignored my protests about needing more to fully numb the area, and incredibly, said to me, "Well, if it doesn't get numb in a few minutes, we're just gonna have to go with the level we're at," and then walked out of the room. I had no idea what he meant, until he returned, verified that I was still feeling pain in the area, and then before I knew what was happening, STARTED YANKING MY TOOTH FROM MY MOUTH W/O ENSURING IT WAS PROPERLY NUMBED. As I howled and writhed in pain, he condescendingly dismissed my protests and disbelief by telling me that I need to just suck it up b/c it will be over soon, and when he was a kid, he never had anesthesia to have cavities filled! That's great buddy, except that we're in the 21st century now, and you were tearing a tooth from my gums, not drilling and filling. Stay away. read more

I didn't opt for general anesthesia because it's a huge phobia of mine so I just got laughing gas and local anesthesia. I recently went in for a wisdom tooth extraction at this office at the referral of my regular dentist whom I love. I was a little off-put by the administrative staff when I arrived, but tried to brush it off as a bad day. When I actually got in to see the Dr., everything was fine and the procedure went well. The problems started for me a couple weeks later when i realized that they sent the claims into both my dental insurance and my health insurance as well as charging me for the visit. I was overcharged by the office. When I called to ask about it, I was told that my refund check was already in the mail. Two weeks later ( I live in Queens so it shouldn't take more than a few days), when I still hadn't received the refund check, I called again and was told that I needed to wait another week before they would stop that check and issue me a new one. I told them this wasn't acceptable and that I had waited long enough and that a refund check should be issued today. The girl I was speaking to ran me in circles until I asked to speak to the doctor. She sent me to the office manager who was completely unreasonable and when I got upset about the situation proceeded to tell me that I must have a huge problem if I get this upset over a little bit of money. I am still waiting for a check and will never go to this office again. read more

I went to see Dr. Gelfman to get my wisdom teeth extracted. I found him through my health care website. I was really glad that I went here to get it done. The receptionist staff was quite helpful and efficient. I had a 3:30 appointment and waited about 10-15 minutes to be seen. Dr. Gelfman provided me with my options and was great at explaining everything to me. I was actually pretty scared but I felt at ease with the Dr and his assistant-and I didn't use laughing gas. The assistant was super friendly too as she kept asking how I was--I think I was humming and clenching my fists and closed my eyes tight during the extraction. The procedure itself was quick and Dr. Gelfman was super nice. He answered questions and provided me with lots of resources for taking care of my teeth. read more

DR Miles is excellent!!! I have the biggest anxiety attacks when it comes to going to the dentist but he puts you at ease. He's pulled out all of my wisdom teeth and each time I didn't even know that he was done!!! He is quick, professional and the visit is painless!!! Dr. Miles was very impatient and rude with me. I do not know how well he completes surgery because we never got that far. I told him that it had been my experience with 2 other dentists that my lower back teeth were difficult to numb. This was also the case with Dr. Miles. He attempted to begin work on my teeth without giving the additional injection time to work. He was not at all concerned with my comfort and somehow blamed me because of this problem. He took no responsibility that it was his job to make sure I would not feel pain. He also complained that my insurance payment that he contracted for was not enough and tried to over bill me directly for procedures that were covered by my insurance. Beware!!! read more

Having put off extracting a molar for years, an infection set in and my dentist insisted it had to come out ASAP. I came upon Dr. Gelfman via my insurance and Yelp. Believe the hype - he's friendly, the office is clean and modern, and you don't feel like your questions/concerns are rushed. He even told me to never let anyone touch my bottom wisdom teeth, because on me it would be tough and not recommended. I appreciated that Dr. Gelfman wasn't trying to make another buck or $1000 off me as most dentists are, when it is suddenly "recommended" that you need a ton of things done. I opted for the laughing gas but Dr. Gelfman was so kind and funny that I probably didn't really need it. 24 hours post op now and I'm feeling very relieved. Find someone else. This "physician" advised me to use a prescription written by ANOTHER DOCTOR for ANOTHER PURPOSE to treat a wound that he himself had created when he dug out one of my molars. So I went back for a checkup because I was worried about the severe pain I was experiencing day 7. I saw Dr. Miles and he was much nicer to me and explained everything in detail as to what was happening to me. I think that he just likes to joke around and use sarcasm as a way to make his patients feel better. Perhaps I wasn't up for that before. Or maybe it's because I mentioned to the ladies that work there how unhappy I was, and he was trying to make amends with me. Whatever the case, I can't particularly say I would recommend him or go back, but my follow-up wasn't bad. I wish he would've explained everything in detail before my procedure, or after. I went in for a tooth extraction (fractured tooth). The assistant and Dr. Miles did not allow the numbing injections to take hold. Believe it or not, I felt EVERY tug and pull. Dr. Miles had the unmitigated gull to ask why was I screaming. To top it off, my full tooth was not extracted. Half of my tooth is still lodged in to my gum. Dr. Miles did not extract the tooth fully. That experience was beyond traumatic. I am too often duped that offices located in next neighborhoods are better equipped and have top notch professionals - not at this location. Please call your dentist and instruct him/her to removed Dr. Miles and his practice from the list of recommendations. For the recored, Dr. Miles does not have his MD, he only hold his DDS. read more

I was sent to Cary Miles DDS by my usual dentist after I got a massive infection from a routine cleaning that was far too rough. Miles put me on an antibiotic and told me to come back in a week. It did not work and I had another week with another antibiotic. He claimed that I needed a root canal so I went to another specialist, who said that my tooth still was alive since I could feel cold and hot. Sent me to a periodontist who sent me back for the root canal. I ended up going to yet another specialist to have my tooth pulled. He said, "You are lucky that you are still alive." Miles billed my insurance as if he was Dr. Gelfman in his same office. I never saw Gelfman. He sent me a refund check after I complained to the insurance company. I'd pay him never to have seen me. What an incompetent. He cost me thousands of dollars of future dental work. He appears to lack ethics as someone else posted on Yelp. I certainly agree. Avoid at all costs! read more
