It aims at a slightly hipper clientele than most, with plenty of colours and stylings. It never seems terribly busy, and does not insist on appointments for most days. Early in the week is best, since that has the most offers.

My hair is difficult. It never stays the way anyone puts it, it doesn't behave the way I want it,…read moreand many different hairdressers have had different ideas on how to deal with it. But, much like my hair, most hairdressers don't listen to what I want. Some hairdressers get so enamoured with my natural curls that I end up looking like Sandy at the end of Grease. I've come to know my delinquent mop quite well over the years, and what will work for its wild and curly ways... but often I find stylists don't listen, determined to tame the beast. Lucky for me, I have a lovely hairdressers across the street from my home who listen to my needs! I've been many times now, and my hair always looks great afterwards. On this occasion, I needed my hair chopped. Recently, my locks have been less than luscious - they have been unhealthy, lots of broken, wild flyaways, and generally requiring a bit of TLC. A rescue operation was needed, which meant I had to say farewell to my long tresses. It just so happened that I was also heading to a family get together for my aunt's birthday, so I needed my hair to look good and for the style to last. So I had a sit down to discuss my (extensive) needs to one of the ladies in SEI - I forget her name, sadly - and we agreed a shoulder-length style was best to allow for springiness... my hair can be very springy; it never stays straight, but will take a soft curl. The lady who worked on my hair listened to me, offered a couple of suggestions, and actually did what I asked! And magic happened! My hair looked classy, and almost vintage. It was a miracle! Stayed nice all night long, too. If you're in Shawlands and in need of some hair TLC, this is the place to go. And the banter's pretty good, too! :)

They have kept to the same hours opening from Sunday to Saturday. It used to be a no need for an appointment, which they have kept going as many clients still thought they were Supercuts (who ran the no appointments required system). I went into book my appointment as like many hadn't had a haircut in months due to the lockdown, to be honest, I think it was more a year and half for me. She remembered my hair, mainly as I have brightly coloured hair, which was great so she knew how I liked it. When I went along I signed in for the track & trace, hand sanitised and wore my mask at all times. The staff wore their PPE protection including a face shield. The seats and areas were kept super clean. It's weird seeing cleaning bottles where it used to be mainly hairsprays and mouses. Instead of the hairdresser cape to cover you it was a see through plastic cape and they used cotton type towels instead of normal towels. The latter is just gentler on your hair. The two staff were able to work and socially distance, due to the shop being quite spacious. It also has an open front due to being based in a shopping mall, so it was pretty airy. The other staff member could work on the opposite side as they have chairs and mirrors on both sides of the shop. So, there was another client having her hair done behind me. It felt a comfortable experience despite all the Covid restrictions and guidelines. The girl did another excellent job of my hair and I look forward to going back when it's safe again to do so.

While, my favourite hairdressers of all time remains Hair Design (a bit more of a walk away), I reckon Cortex will please the masses. It is a small, local hair dressers which is friendly and often fairly quiet so you don't always need to have made an appointment earlier (this suits me, due to my highly indecisive nature). The girls in here are really nice and if you want some advice on what they'd recommend they'll happily provide a few suggestions. I've always had a decent cut out of here and the prices are very reasonable. Though, I've never had my hair dyed in here, so I'm not sure what that aspect of the business is like. They also offer spray tans for only £10 a pop. Something I've yet to try in here but I've heard some very good reviews of it. So, may well take up this great deal once the summer starts to show itself.

So having moved to Dennistoun I searched around for somewhere close by to get the mop chopped. I used to visit a barber in the Merchant City because generally barbers can give you a bit of a hatchet job/ short back and sides and I wanted someone who could actually cut hair according to face shape and style required etc. At Hair Co Paul, the owner, is the sort of snipper that knows what sort of style will suit and how to create that. The sign above the door proclaims 'Colour Specialist' as this is predominantly a ladies joint. Paul's two white Scotties wriggle around under your legs as he cuts and chats away adding to the charm of the place. You can tell he loves his work and his dogs and you feel relaxed and safe in the knowledge that you're not about to be sheared like a sheep. Most of all, for me, it's just a great haircut for a very cheap £9. Bargain. Highly recommended.
