They're always rotating so you get an amazing mixture of everything-- spirituality, history, economics, politics, religion... I think that's kind of the theme of that area. That's my favorite. They also have several different sort of resource centers. The most amazing thing is the upstairs, it's like a museum. It has art all over the ceilings that transport you to Europe. It's a nice place to study, there's huge rooms to do so, one with a view outside to the art museum. You can usually have an entire huge table to yourself! I stopped by to pick up some books to take with me to a community health fair I was attending. The volunteers were very helpful in getting me to the children's section, so that, I could pick out age appropriate materials. They had a wide selection and all in very good shape. The Conely Branch of the Detroit Public Library system is one of the most beautiful structures in…read morethe collection. The design of the building harkens back to the early 20th century. It is a large, redbrick building that exudes strength and confidence. The large study room in the rear is surrounded by windows. The whole place is topped off with a beautiful roof. Some of the trees have been left on the site so the general area is given a parklike air. One difficulty with the place is that parklike expanse. Most of it has been fenced in. I realize that there may be difficulties in the neighborhood but to turn one of the few trustworthy areas where children may play or sit outside and read in peace into a fenced in space that they can only look at but never enter is not nice. The library has a great variety of materials. The staff is knowledgeable and hardworking. As Detroit grows I am sure this library will continue to be appreciated and enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. "The Conely Branch Library located at 4600 Martin Street on Detroit's Southwest side, just a short distance from Chadsey High School, is one of many legacy libraries that Andrew Carnegie bequeathed to towns all across America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Named for Edwin Conely, a prominent local attorney and a member of the Library Commission, the branch library opened on September 15, 1913, in a part of Detroit that at the time was a rural area. Over the course of the next 13 years, the area grew so much that it was necessary to add a large room to the rear of the original library building, thus ensuring that the library could best serve the community for decades to come. By March of 2000, the years of constant use had affected the building to the point that it required extensive restoration. A portion of the capital improvement funds made available by Detroit voters was used to restore this wonderful old building to its former glory and to bring it into the new century. Today, Detroit can be proud of this Carnegie Library. Not only is it one of an ever-diminishing number of Carnegie libraries still in operation, but it is also one of the few that have been completely restored. The flavor of the period is alive for all to see.
