Asking about my snoring with my doctor led me to do a home study and then eventually an official sleep study here at Carolina Sleep Services.
Located across the street in a business area from Atrium Pineville, the location has plenty of parking. The buildings are a bit clustered together so you do a little weaving to get to the location. Since the study occurs in the evening, parking is no issue. It is a bit weird showing up to a location when its dark, but it is, what it is.
Since its evening, you ring the door bell and get buzzed in. The night staff checks you in and you are assigned a "sleep tech" that takes care of you.
I only saw one other patient, but there are multiple rooms. Each room has their own restroom facilities, but basically set up with a bed, a recliner, a tv and then a couple of small tables. The bathroom had a shower in it but since my sleep study was just one night, I decided to forgo the shower and just go home.
Once you get to your room, you've got free time until you "want to go to bed" so you call the sleep tech using a buzzer and he or she gets you ready but placing all the monitoring equipment (electrodes on your scalp, body, and legs). There's a series of commands the sleep tech talks you through (through the intercom) while he is monitoring the equipment so that he can adjust as needed and you are off to dreamland.
An infrared camera is mounted on the ceiling to monitor you (which is weird) but make sense.
Overall I made it through the study. It's really not something I would want to do again, but the facilities and the staff were good enough. Didn't really get a good nights rest, but got enough data so that my sleep doctor can make a recommendation. read more
