I had purchased a car about a year ago this month and had some engine trouble. I made an appointment at CarMax to troubleshoot and make repairs. A year ago I purchased the Max Care plan when I bought the car. It paid off today as all of the repairs were covered under the plan. The service was quick the had the parts the same day. Eli at the Brooklyn Park CarMax turned a near no-sale in to a successful transaction by having a "get it done" attitude and drive while maintain humorous interactions. Not only was Eli knowledgeable about everything he did on his end, but he knew exactly when and where to bring in extra team members who could assist in issues as they arose. At 2 previous dealerships the dragging on of the sale process led them to then sell the vehicle to another owner. I told this to Eli from the start as the sale on my Passport seemed to be heading down the same route, and in less than 48 hours from reaching out to him I was driving off the lot with the vehicle of my choice and had a full trade in completed. I was overall satisfied with my vehical purchase here. But beware: if you were like my wife and I and who had poor credit and were in a tight spot, then worked our butts of for a year to get in better credit standing, then have your bank request a payoff statement to reduce your apr by over 7%( overall saving us $5000). Then avoid this place at all costs. Hustle, grind, save up, take the bus, move in with family, find work within walking distance if you can, sell crack, sell your soul to the devil. But whatever you do avoid these criminals if you are in a tight financial situation. Our nations economy and the rich feed off the poor and make ridiculous amounts of money off people just trying to get by. Needless to say the financial office in Kennesaw GA is full of the most crooked staff who will do everything to test your limits.. It appears they have fun playing games with you and will do everything they can to lie and drag out any process.. It's tough because many car dealerships get bad reviews by people who are ignorant, and petty. So the best thing you can do when you are actually financially ready to purchase a vehicle: go to your bank to see what rates you can get financed at, and use this as your bargaining chip when purchasing a vehicle. I know it's hard and I know you want a Bently, Ferrari, supra, or a G wagon right now . But that takes time, saving, investing, and hard work. Be humble, be happy with what you have and can afford, don't worry about others they are just gonna hate no matter what, do you, keep your head up, keep focused, and continue your dreams, regroup when something fails, try again. Their online "offer" was higher than similar car dealers, so I made an appointment, took the car in, and within 45 minutes walked out with a check. When I was an employee at this location I purchased a Rav 4 and I purchased the extended service plan Maxcare. 2 years later the engine blew up on the Rav4. I took it to the local Toyota dealership. The only thing I was asked was to provide proof of the oil changes. New engine was put in! If you do buy a car from Carmax, buy Maxcare. (and keep records of the oil changes) The total repair bill was about 8 thousand dollars on a vehicle I still owned 4 thousand on. All I paid was $50. read more

I bought an older Honda Civic Crv from Brooklyn Center Minnesota. The sales process was easy, and my sales person was great. I chose a Crv from another state, called my local CarMax, and my sales person Kear Dahl, sp? found a similar car with less miles. After a week it arrived, I made an appointment and signed the papers. The car was freshly waxed, spotless, new tires, fresh oil! Clean! Most used car dealers just sell a car as is. CarMax goes through all thier cars before selling. CarMax is not the best price. However, I see great value in purchasing a used car from them! The cars are sold at a "fair" price. Then they will sell you an extended warranty on top of the price of the car. My warranty covers the car for four years or 40,000 additional miles. On top of that, there is a 90 day warranty included. read more

Don't get a loan through them, use someone else. i purchased a car here and am happy with it but when i changed my loan over to my bank and paid off Carmax they stopped reporting to the credit agencies. Now i am forced to go to all three agencies and contest this since they are all showing that i have two loans open on this car. Tried calling about a repair for a spindle repair from the warranty service they offer and said they couldn't help me because I quote "it's intentional" and it is not covered. Worst experience ever. I found the car I wanted and had it transferred in. Te car arrived on Wednesday. The sales person Steffen, asked when I would be available to come in and look at the car, and I told him on Monday, possibly Today which is Friday. He asked what time and I told him 2 pm. I got caught in a meeting at work, and of course he called and texted. I told him I was in a meeting and to please stop contacting me. He responded that he was sorry, but that he would have to release my car. I called and asked to speak with the sales manager, and asked my name, then what it was concerning. I told her I was a prospective customer, and I wanted to speak with the sales manager. She transferred me to another sales guy. We bought my wife's car from them a year ago, and had a great experience. I referred my sister to them as well, and she bought a car. Apparently, that kind of customer loyalty earns you nothing with these people. They treated me like a second class customer, and I still haven't heard from the sales manager. DO NOT SHOP HERE! Don't trust CarMax when selling your car. You're better off selling it on craigslist or to a Luther dealer instead. I went to see how much they would give me for my 2010 Acura TL SH-AWD that has a KBB of 20k. They came back with an offer of 10,000 stating that the car has been repainted, since the black didn't match the hood. I just bought this car a month ago as well. They kept saying that the car was probably been in an accident, but my Carfax was cleared. They kept saying they don't buy cars that are popular for their front lot and they would need to auction it off which is understandable, but they clearly don't know anything about car sales since it was a new car still. Long story short I took my car to another dealer to see if I can sell it, and they give me exactly what it was worth without the hassle of saying anything on my paint. All the tv ad about them is a waste of time and they employee people who clearly can't appraise a bike more than a car. read more

I've purchased from CarMax before (in ATL, GA to be exact). I visited this store with the intentions of test driving a vehicle that was in this store location. I was out of town in MN and only 20 mins away from this store so why not? My husband and I had been shopping around for a specific car and to our luck-- the car was here in Brooklyn Park. Anyway, long story short-- the sales guy seemed cool at first but when we talked about financing options and informed him that we lived out of state he seemed very uninterested suddenly. Obviously we weren't going to pay for taxes and fees etc and drive the car home and deal with that but the fact that he couldn't do much or tried to just get us out the door and told us he would HOLD it and sent us of the door was a bit messed up. He could have somewhat gotten some commission on his end, had he processed things properly and just held the car and transfer it to us. Instead he suggested we go to a local one back home and have them transfer it to us. And that was what! Sadly-- he didn't know we could get any car we wanted whenever we wanted... cash or financed. Easy sale for him but with his demeanor of trying to overlook us and just trash us... I gladly took my business elsewhere. Poor place to buy a car, if you ask me. These people are better off on unemployment than working a job they obviously have no passion for. read more

They bungled my paperwork when I sold them my vehicle, ultimately resulting in a Tollway company from North Carolina harassing me over a piddly $11 fine. I've wasted an hour trying to figure out how to prevent a company from NC from trashing my credit report over an $11 fine, an incident that only occurred because somebody at CarMax fumbled the ball. They have demonstrated zero consideration for my time. Zero empathy for my situation. They are accepting zero culpability. Sure, they'll take care of the $11. But they readily admit that this is a common occurrence when you sell your vehicle to them. Remember, its not the $11 fine that's the issue. The issue is that the car is rolling around the country, still in my name. And this is a "common" problem, for which they accept zero culpability. I've been hung up on twice trying to voice my concerns, both on conversations where I made them aware I was recording the call. I'll never be back. read more

We purchased a 2015 Chevy Equinox which was a poorly maintained fleet car. with the 2.4L DOHC engine. Right from the get go the car engine light came on they had to replace the engine. Which took some time to get the engine. Got the car back and just after the warranty ran out it blow a front engine seal. So they would NOT take care of it. Not Their problem! So I had Big O Tires replace the front engine seal and they put in a new belt. Then the car recently broke down, ha to be towed to Medi-Care which the belt broke due to another front seal blown. Replaced the belt to get it on the road. Called them because Medi-care said the reason the front seal is going bad is the engine burns oil. Called Carmax about the situation and they basically told to screw my self. I would not recommend CarMax for any used vehicle. They made the purchase easy but don't back their cars. This car has been a problem right from day one of purchasing it. read more

Just the opposite experience as the other review. I went to get a trade in price on my 2014 Subaru outback at both CarMax and the local (1 mile away) Subaru dealer. Dealer quoted me $23,200 and CarMax quoted me $23,000. I paid $24,000 for the car in December of 2013. I had super low mileage on the car, 4500 miles on an 18 month old car. I am moving to NYC so I don't need a car. Both places told me the quote was good for a week but if the mileage stayed under 10,000 and there was no damage to the vehicle, the price would still be held for a few weeks (until I was actually leaving town). Fast forward 3 weeks or so and 1,300 miles ... I chose to go to the dealer because who wouldn't take an extra $200 given the chance. They made me wait over an hour and then came back with a price of $20,000!!! Yes, the car lost $3,200 in value that fast according to them. So, I got on the phone, called CarMax and got Adam. He said he would be happy to have someone assist me as soon as I got there. I drove the mile to CarMax and true to his word, there was someone waiting to help me and even with the extra 1,300 miles on the car, they held to their word and gave me $23,000 for my car! This place is a ripoff disguising itself as a customer friendly place. I went there to sell my car. All of their advertising communicated they were experts and pay top dollar. I set an appointment online for 11AM. I got there 10 minutes before my appointment, even though they had me listed as an appointment they realized the "salesperson" assigned to my case called in sick. I had to wait 15 for them to find someone else (there was no less than 10 people in Carmax polos but only one customer). I finally met with Zach, who was pleasant but had no clue about cars or common courtesy (when he approached me, he only shook my hand and completely disregarded my wife until I introduced her) the appraisal process took 15 min or so but their valuation was $3650 less than offer I got via Trade In Marketplace (it took me 10 min to get that guaranteed valuation online without any time wasting). They make a big deal of their appraisal process but it's all a trick to buy a car for well below a market value, don't be fooled. My final price for my vehicle was $29,200 at Audi Maplewood. They were off by $5200, is it gross incompetence or deliberate attempt to steal? read more

Restored my faith in humanity (at least car dealerships and salespeople) We were looking to sell our 2009 BMW 335i and went to Motorwerks BMW to get an appraisal. Salespeople were hovering outside like hawks, and immediately asked us if we needed any help. I told one that we were looking to sell our car and he took us in, albeit begrudgingly. After about 5 minutes of checking on their computer and a 5 minute test drive, we sat down and he pointed out everything that was wrong with the car. How it would cost $4,000 to fix the damage from the minor damage from the couple of fender benders the car had been in. How it would cost $1,600 just to turn off the airbag light. For good measure, he added that he "does not make any commission when he buys a car", information he volunteered unasked. I own the car and am aware of what it's exact condition is. Finally, he offered us $8,000 which is fine if that's what you can pay for it, it is what it is. There was no need to both put both the car and us down. Disgusted, we left Motorwerks and were about to head home when we thought we should get a second opinion. Having driven past CarMax a couple of time and read about them in the news, we decided to make the 25 minute drive to give them a shot. After our previous experience, we weren't too optimistic. But we would have been willing to sell CarMax the car for a couple of hundred below $8,000 if it meant not having to deal with Motorwerks. We get to CarMax, and were greeted by a very pleasant Bobby. He got a couple of "senior appraisers" who seemed to know what they were doing and they inspected and test drove the car. Both extremely amiable and Minnesota nice. We then waited for them to figure out a number. It took a good 45 minutes, which was 40 minutes more than Motorwerks, but Bobby sat with us the whole time and we talked about what he did besides working there, and our impending roadtrip. It made the wait feel a lot shorter than it was. The appraisal finally came back and we held our breath as Bobby went through the findings before getting to what we actually wanted to know, what they were going to offer for it. We got to the end, and the offer was for $13,500. We were astounded. The Blue Book value was $11,500 and Motorwerks had only offered $8,000. As we left, we asked Bobby if we should come back at a specific time the following week to finalize everything so he could get a commission. He said it wasn't necessarily. Turns out, he had just graduated and received a job offer at an accounting firm, and it was his second last day on the job and so wouldn't be getting a commission on the sale. We congratulated him, genuinely happy for him and drove off with our faith in humanity restored. read more

I'm seriously disappointed in my experience with CarMax in Brooklyn Park, MN. I sold my leased vehicle to them on May 10th, it is now June 18th and they have not yet managed to pay off the lease. Leasing company is now threatening to ding my credit score, and CarMax's reply to me is gee, sorry about that, we haven't paid it off because we can't figure out where to send the check. Come on, this is your business and profession! It is Nissan Capital Leasing, not some unknown small company. I suggested that they just write a check to me for the modest amount that is currently overdue on the lease which I would use to get the payments caught up and which would reduce their ultimate payoff so no financial impact to them, but protect my credit, instant reply was nope, we can't do that. That is just terrible, terrible, terrible customer service. I'm going to end up eating the overdue payment (and who knows how much more) to protect my credit, completely unfairly. read more

I was in for an appraisal recently hoping they may be able to make me an offer on my 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee. After waiting about 40 minutes for them to do an appraisal (after being told it would be 25 minutes) they came in $2500 lower than the amount I said I was looking to get in the beginning of the appointment. The fact that they were not able to give me what I was looking for was not the issue. The issue was the fact that they had to know they would come in no where near my asking price in the beginning of the appraisal and should have let me know before wasting my time. The offer was also $2000-$2500 below NADA trade in value for the vehicle. Not impressed. The facility was clean and comfortable, and the staff were friendly and easy to work with., Unfortunately, that doesn't change the fact that I left very frustrated and will not likely do business with CarMax again. read more

Found a car I loved and was able to test drive it the next day. The car didn't get transferred to the store I wanted it at but my consultant was kind enough to meet me across town to test drive it and finish up the paperwork.
