As a gas station, the prices are fairly reasonable (for Belmont, at least). Nothing special. The smog-check portion of the gas station is only open until 5pm. I got there by 4 and they got my smog check done very quickly. With my ad-mail coupon, it was $40 out-the-door ($29.75 + $8.25certificate + $2transmit fee). Not bad at all. One downside is that they don't have any waiting room; you can either stand awkwardly inside the tiny convenience store, or sit on a bench outside. (or maybe walk across the street to Carlmont Shopping Center and get some ice cream or coffee). If they keep sending me good smog-check coupons, odds are good that I'll be coming back. read more

Wow this place is shady. They have done oil changes pretty quick at a decent price, but once they told me I needed a tune-up and to change the timing belt, and charged me 800 bucks. I trusted them that these repairs were needed, but last time I brought it in the guy didn't seem to remember me and asked me how many miles were on the car. Then he said I'll need a new timing belt soon! I reminded him that they replaced it a month and a half ago, and he kind of mumbled, "oh, yeah it looks like somebody opened it up". I know nothing about cars, but now I wonder if they did ANYTHING to it when they charged me that money. Either way, something seemed shady. Next, I took my car in to get a headlight changed, which cost 30 bucks, and the guy didn't wear a glove, so the headlight went out. What kind of mechanic doesn't know not to touch the bulb? I took it to Precision Tune AutoCare off El Camino (Redwood City) and they replaced the headlight for free, said it had finger grease on it. The guys who work here seem nice but I will never return because they clearly take advantage of their customers. If they would be honest I'd have brought my business back here for years. Their loss. Unless you know a lot about cars and are ready to call some seemingly nice guys on their BS, I'd go somewhere else more trustworthy. read more

Hasan and Nick seem like nice guys, but I don't like them as mechanics. Reasons: 1) They overcharge for the work they do. 2) Given the choice to properly diagnose a problem or randomly replace parts at the owner's expense, they would gladly encourage you to fix every random thing in a wild goose hunt. 3) When fixing/replacing things, they will not offer you the choice to ONLY fix the problematic components/systems. Yes, I have a 10 year old car, and I understand that many things are old. But, not everything that's old needs fixing! E.g., if you come in to replace the water pump, they could suggest that you replace the power steering pump. "And you know what... since we're here anyway, let's replace the whole steering rack too, maybe put in some new shocks, alternator, radiator, thermostat... And by the way when was the last time you changed your clutch? Ohhhhhh really? 60000 miles ago? Even if it's not slipping and you drive mostly on the freeway, you should replace that too, just in case. Oh it'll only be $3000 but you should do it for your peace of mind." Yes I'm exaggerating a little, but not that much. They'll push repairs any chance they get. 4) The quality of work is piss. Often, they have their subordinates work for them, and they may not be trustworthy. I got my car back after they changed the timing belt and it had all kinds of problems it didn't have before. When I popped the hood, there was a hose disconnected and saw Hasan looking confused about what it was and he just randomly jabbed it around in the engine bay, hoping it would stick to something. The gas here is always more expensive than the Chevron across the street too. There should be no reason to come here at all. read more

I frequently use Yelp to find good restaurants, etc. I just picked up my car from Carlmont Village Shell, and once again am very satisfied with their service. My sister and I have both taken our cars to them for many years. As girls, we are both wary of being taken advantage of in pricing and additional services. We have not experienced either of these things here (which we confirmed with our Uncle, a mechanic in another state). I would highly recommend Carlmont Village Shell to everyone. read more

I had my car towed to the shop, it wouldn't start. Turned out there wasn't anything wrong with it, may have been some loose thingies. They didn't charge me or even try to sell me on anything - completely different experience from other reviews. And honestly - I am an easy target. Calmont Village Shell gets 10 stars from me. I have been using them to service my cars for over 15 years and they do terrific work. They have serviced my Japanese, German and American cars and I have never had one problem with their work. They are responsive, priced fairly and offer the highest level of mechanical ability. I trust them completely with my cars and recommend them to everyone. Besides routine maintenance (which they do much less expensively than car dealers), they have replaced brakes, installed new tires and aligned them, fixed engine problems, replaced lights and sensors, and done a number of other tasks. Again, I heartily recommend them to anyone who needs a mechanic they can trust and who has their best interest in mind. read more

I brought my daughter's car once and the guy found $450 worth of problems with it. That seemed rather high but I was in a hurry: she was visiting for a few days only. Next time I brought in my own car for general inspection and the guy told me the car needs a new radiator: it has a leak. When I was leaving with the car to think about it, he ran after me to add the coolant. Nice! I was miffed because I always watch for spots under the car and I had not noticed leaks before that visit. Then I looked at the radiator and noticed that a plastic plug at the top side was partially unscrewed! Well, I screwed it on tight and I am never coming to this shop again. Really, is it worth losing a customer to do a thing like this? Even if the plug loosened by itself, which I highly doubt, wouldn't a good mechanic search for a root cause of the leak rather than stiffing the customer with a bill? read more

Wow, sad to see all the negative comments about these guys. Finding reputable auto mechanics can be like looking for a needle in a haystack. But, I have found I can trust these guys to do the work they say they will do and point out recommended services for me to consider. When they give me an estimate, it's right on and a competitive price. When they tell me my car will be ready, it typically is. My car is old, a 2000 BMW with over 180,000 miles and I'm sure the dealer would be charging me way more than these guys and telling me a myriad of things need to get done that probably don't need to get done. I just wrote my first Yelp review for another great experience with a service provider and was surprised when I took a look at some of the negative comments of Carlmont Shell so I thought I would put in my two cents. I've used Hasan and Nick for about 10 years, mostly German cars except for my Toyota minivan. I know enough about cars to know that while it may not appear that something needs to be replaced, getting the work done before it becomes a problem will end up saving you time and trouble in the end. They have both gone above and beyond the call of duty to help me out and I have never felt "taken" by any of their recommendations. They are, in my opinion, honest and have my best interests in mind. The thing about cars - they are sometimes about as easy to diagnose as it is to find that leak in your roof! I'm hoping that some of these negative reviews were examples of just that but I would recommend Hasan and Nick to anyone. read more

Wow! I am shocked to read anything negative about the folks at Carlmont Shell. I have brought our car(s) here for over 10 years and never been anything but happy with the service we have received. I have driven in with flat tires right before school field trips and they have given me their own cars to drive the kids. They have changed tires for me in between dropping one kid off and picking up another. They treat us like family and never make me feel like I know nothing about cars when they talk to me. I'm bummed that these guys have bad reviews. Hassan was wonderful to work with and really helped me out of a jam. I drive a 2003 Land Rover Discovery and had about EVERYTHING go wrong with it right before my wedding. I needed the head gasket, shuttle valve for the ABS/Traction Control system, and Oxygen Sensor fixed on it and the dealer quoted me $8500 for this service. We just paid for a wedding so it was not possible to spend that much. I remember going to Hassan for a simple smog test back in April and he told me that he works on LRs. So, I took my car to him to see what he could do. A week later and for half the cost the dealer quoted me, I had my baby back to normal. On top of the good service, he offered a pick up and drop off service. It's been over a month since it's been fixed and its still perfect and running great. read more

I've been going to Hassan and Nick for 11 years, with a Chrysler, a bug and a Mazda Tribute. Definitely echo other comments about going the extra distance to get me out of a fix when I've left it with one hour to go to get a smog test before I get fined, a rush to get a nuisance part to get the bug fixed fast, helping me save money on a 100,000 mile car to keep it running but not go overboard on fixing everything, saving a lot of money on my new Tribute service against the dealer price. Yes, they do point out work that they think you should keep an eye on, but I find that to be good practice, and it's not forced down my throat. I've used two other local garages and found this to compare very well against those. I was also happy with the price. read more

i brought my BMW 740iL here for my 100k service...it was %30 cheaper than bringing it to a BMW dealer...they even loaned me a car to run some errands while they did the work...now my car is at 190k and still running like a champ...Hassan and Nick do great work and I always recommend my friends and family to them... read more

Took my car there to replace clutch. Big mistake!. Two days after I got my car back the speedometer started to work erratically. Went back and asked Hasan to check if the wire connecting speed sensor in the transmission with speedometer wasn't damaged during transmission removal and installation (it happens sometimes when mechanic forgets to disconnect the wire before dropping the tranny). Without looking they wanted to replace speed sensor in the transmission right away. Agreed to to that even though the sensor was already replaced less than 2 month before (the sensor is cheap and requires only 1/2 hour work, so I decided to bite the bullet). Got the car back and speedometer failed again the same day. Went back and asked again to check continuity in the speedo wire. Instead they wanted to replace some mysterious "other sensor in the dash" which was "damaged because the new sensor in the transmission was giving to much voltage". Of course they refused to admit that replacement of the speed sensor was unnecessary and wanted to disassemble the whole dash to "replace the other sensor" which would mean lots and lots of billable hours. The only problem with that: according to Factory Service Manual for my car there is no "other sensor in the dash". Inspected the speedo wire myself and found that it was indeed broken during transmission removal and replacement. Soldered it and my speedometer started working again. Hasan refused to admit the mistake and reimburse me for unnecessary sensor replacement. But this is not the end of the horror story, this is just the beginning: less than 2K miles and 1 month after installation the new clutch failed. Got my car towed back to Carlmont Village Shell to exercise the explicit 12K/12month warranty stated on the work order. Hasan flat out refused to honor the warranty stating that the clutch has failed because I didn't know how to drive manual transmission. Well, if middle-aged guy who never owned an automatic and managed to get 120kmiles from factory clutch on this particular car "doesn't know how to drive stick" I don't know who does... Long story short: I needed the car to drive to work, so I paid for another clutch out of my pocket ($600) and to add insult to the injury they refused to accept my credit cards for payment and demanded cash only, threatening to use "mechanics lien" if I didn't pay right away. Guess what: In less than 3K miles the clutch failed again and I had to get rid of otherwise perfectly solid car. PS. Giving this shop 1 star only because yelp won't allow to give less. read more

I've been going to them for almost 12 years with what is now a very old car. (20 yrs) Used to live close by, but they are still worth the effort to go to as they always give great advice and are concerned with safety and have helped me not having to buy a new car. After reading posts below, I must say that each customer can always say "no" to a service proposed, but how great it is to have people that actually will "take care of you". To me, that is Service! Hassan and Nick are definately not high pressure salesmen. They charge fair market value, and I've never had any issue with something they've replaced or repaired. Communication is always key in every interaction today, and so if you have a budget limit, just let them know in advance and they will certainly do their best. There have been times when I had no clue what was wrong with my car, and they've had me out the door within a few minutes, sometimes at no charge depending on the problem. I can not believe I read a review where the same experience happened to me. I brought my car in for an oil change. The mechanic noticed my radiator had a slight leak. I knew the leak was present before bringing it in. I was going on a 700 mile drive so I decided to have them replace the radiator rather than break down on the 5 in the middle of nowhere. When I returned to pick up the car, the mechanic asked me how long it has been since I had a tune up. I was unsure and told him that. He told me the check engine light will probably come on while I am on my trip. The car has 60,000 miles on it and the check engine light has never come on before. I left the shop and drove up the hill to my house. The car barely made it. There was no power and (can you believe it) the check engine light was on. I took it right back to them and watched every move they made. After revving the engine for about 5 minutes, the problem went away. I still do not know what they did to make the car run so bad. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!!! read more
