We did Active Kids in Newport Beach and tried the YMCA after-school program and they were pretty terrible, so we were thrilled when we found Christ Church by the Sea. After just a week at this after-school program our son said he liked this one even better than After School All-Stars, which really surprised me. Their facilities are outstanding. They have a large playground, a lot of toys, bunny rabbits, a caring staff, and they keep the groups very small. They do homework with the child and when they do pickup they have informally asked the teacher about my child's progress, which is great. It shows how personalized the program is. They have a very structured program and it is great for my child. I was a little bit concerned at first since we aren't Methodist so let me address this here. In a nutshell, this program is for everyone and not just people who share methodist beliefs. They are warm and caring. We're Christian, and we wouldn't mind at all if they talked about God more, but they really don't push religion very much. They have two short sessions with a pastor every month which largely consists of singing faith-based songs to guitar music. I think this is probably a good thing since it won't make any of the kids feel ostracized if they aren't religious. My child asks questions about Jesus to the staff all the time--and they love it. They will answer his questions and get almost giddy when he asks questions about Jesus. So the religious aspect is there for the kids seeking it out, but I don't think anyone who doesn't share their religious beliefs feel a bit uncomfortable. Everyone we've seen--including the pastor--is female (for what its worth).

Recently my son always brings a basketball to school that way more children can play without fighting for what basketballs the school offers. Not long ago April 2022 son was absent & left his ball in his class bin so others could play with. Upon returning the following day his ball was gone. Giving the children the benefit of doubt not stealing, we assumed his ball was put in the wrong 5th grade class bin. School ends at 3pm & since we had basketball practice that evening, he/my son really wanted to located his ball. At 3:15pm we went to office and explained to Suzanne Sense that it was very important we try locating his basketball and explained to her we think another may have simply returned basketball to wrong 5th grade class bin and we would really appreciate if he could go look. Well him going back into school grounds only after school had been out for 15 minutes was a Big No No, not sure why. We then pleaded with her to please go check and was only 100ft away, she refused. Why not sure, but apparently school Was already over as of 15 minutes ago... My son then asked ask "please i have practice tonight" Suzanne Sense them started questioning my son trying to confuse him as if he was mistaking, completely inappropriate. Fast forward she did not help, did not care, yet Servant to the children and parents that pay her salary, ok fine. Upon locating his ball a few days later, another child tries saying it's his and not my sons. Funny thing is, my sons name is written on the ball. Now this child starts following my son around claiming this is his ball, even though his name is all over the ball. End of story, one child is sticking with his story trying to steal my sons ball & my son has to defend himself and his property. This could have w fed up being a fight between two school mates when it could have been avoid days later if this woman was not lazy & cared more for the children. She is a very understanding, patient, caring and kind teacher. I believe she is able to read my mind because she chooses songs that I listen to and enjoy, like songs from Studio Ghibli and still challenges me with other great pieces. I'm a college student and just started a little over a year ago, and I find myself playing the piano to relax (if I'm not sleeping that is). I still manage to be able to play songs from the great composers such as Bach, Chopin, and Mozart with what little time I can actually practice. So if I can do it, you can do it! :) If you wish to learn piano, now is the time and 10 River is the place to start; you can take piano lessons whether you are a complete novice or a gifted pianist. Just remember that piano is like life, what you get out of it is how much you put into it.

We had a teacher (Mrs. Ramos) yelling at my child after hearing a rumor (refugee) something that happened when she wasn't around. We saw this while we were in line to pick our child up. Our child has emotional autism and she was aware of that, but instead she choose to yell at him in front of the other kids and made him cry. We had to call the principal to no avail as she was just as useless (Mrs Deboom) as the teacher. This teacher has the nerve to ask us the next day if we spoke to the principal like it was her best friend. Their 1 week summer camp involves introducing kids to Spanish words, with no real teaching of fundamentals such as sounds of each alphabet letter. It's purely "rote memorizing" of words and the kids are asked to answer questions the next day regarding the new words they learned. I mean - honestly, how does anyone learn like that? This summer camp was a waste of money, and a total bore for all ages. The teacher at summer camp was Cecilia - unprofessional, and makes students feel uncomfortable because she stares at them for no reason. Would not recommend this language class to any students between the age of 5-10 years old, as you are better off enrolling your kids in some other summer camp that is fun, educational, and engaging -- all of which this place is not. I'd also like to add that there appears to be some age-discrimination from Cecilia, as she called my child "OLD" in class. Not sure why that was warranted, but the camp is for 5-12 year olds, and there were definitely other 10 year olds in the class, so that seems very off-putting. The teacher also kept telling my child to quiet down when everyone else in the classroom was rowdy, loud, and also talking. I'm not sure why she would want to "target" my child, but it's ridiculous, and unprofessional. Definitely would not recommend her or this program. Upon looking at the other reviews in this listing, it appears that this place has also received multiple 1-star reviews. I'm not surprised.
