I have a lot of pro's to list about this hotel, but my experience with the owner over the weekend was so off-putting that I felt a strong inclination to share this experience with the appropriate outlets.
First off - the hotel is fairly cleanly kept. We had two rooms and, aside from mold growing in the wood of one of the rooms, we were happy with the cleanliness, design and upkeep of the rooms. The lodge has stunning hanging flower baskets and the landscape is neatly trimmed and properly kept. We visited the weekend of May 26th, during the Clinton Rodeo, so the lodge was at full occupancy. This is the second time I have stayed at the Cariboo Lodge, and my previous experience there was satisfactory.
Now for the bad. When we checked in, the five of us in our group requested to split up the room charges evenly. After three of us had paid, the woman (owner) at the front desk became suddenly agitated and said that this was taking up too much of her time. Never before upon check-in (or any other time, for that matter) have I been told by a hotel staff that I am 'wasting' their time. Nevertheless, she spitefully finished the checked in process, and our group had a nice evening on the lawn in front of our room, where there was a great patio table set up.
The following afternoon we had a blanket from our room on the grass, enjoying the sunshine. The owner walked by muttering to herself, and when she had reached beyond us we thought we heard her say 'ask for a blanket next time.' Realizing that perhaps she didn't want us to have the room blanket outside, we took it in immediately, though we acted on assumption given that she didn't speak to us directly about it.
The next morning we sat down for breakfast in the lodge restaurant, and the owner was the only service staff on the patio. We waited patiently but she seemingly ignored us for a few minutes before finally bringing menus. When we asked for drinks, she informed us that 'it will take a really long time for you.' We said we understood the restaurant was busy and that that was fine, we would happily wait. Many minutes later another waitress came out to take our drink order, and when we relayed that we had already put one through, it was understood that our order had in fact not been put through. We were perplexed, wondering what we had done to offend this woman.
The rest of our meal with our waitress was pleasant, the food was timely and very good, and the drinks (once our waitress actually rang them through) came right away. When I went into the desk to pay, I was rung through by the owner. I paid my bill and tipped 25%. At this point she told me, point blank, that she was the one that had been so 'short' with us on the patio. I said I was aware of that. She then went on to say that she was angry that we had taken the room blanket outside and that's why she didn't want to serve us - I said, that's no problem, we didn't think it was a big deal but we're happy to come ask for a blanket from the front desk next time.
I walked away without any confrontation, but during the remainder of our stay I was very upset that the owner of a place could be so unnecessarily rude and passive-aggressive. As the face of her business, I was surprised that she had such a disdain for her own customers. On other occasions we saw her publicly berate her staff, without any consideration for privacy or putting the 'best' face of the hotel forward. It was embarrassing to watch. I visited the Cariboo Lodge with a small group of friendly, respectful individuals. Despite our mistreatment we remained friendly - overly-so, in fact, to try to right whatever wrongs we might have been perceived to have committed. Our cordiality made no difference in the eyes of the owner.
On our final morning we agreed we did not want to risk another visit to the restaurant and went elsewhere. Upon check-out, the owner snarkily told me 'thanks for coming,' with very obvious contempt in her voice. I politely said 'thank you for everything, but after our experience this weekend we will not be coming back.' She yelled "good!" after me as I walked out the door - in front of other guests and the patrons inside the restaurant.
I have been traveling through the Cariboo region for many years and was just very disappointed that such a great hotel is being run by someone with such an attitude. It is with a lot of regret and sadness that I say I will never spend a night at the Cariboo Lodge again. Our experience with the rest of the staff was great, they all did a wonderful job - but it's a shame they have to work for such a person.
I hope this feedback might help in possibly preventing anyone else having a similar experience in the future. If you steer clear of the owner, you will probably have a very nice stay at the Cariboo Lodge!
