I visited the Vanderbilt walk in clinic near my home on Sunday morning with a fever of 102.4 (I…read moreNEVER run fevers). I had a horrible headache & my throat felt like it was on fire! I also noticed an unusual sharp pain in my lower left abdomen that seemed to appear at the same time the other symptoms started. I knew something was wrong, hence the reason I chose Vandy walk-in-clinic. I have insurance & was charged $100.00 even though my Insurance card said "Co-Pay $25 Urgent Care" 1st Red Flag! The MA that took my vitals had a bad attitude & acted like I was a bother to her bc she had to work on a Sunday morning. They did a quick urinalysis. When the female PA entered the exam room, she had very little eye contact & asked the same questions the MA had just asked me! The PA had her face in her laptop, typing, for the majority of the appt. I explained that my throat hasn't hurt like this since I got my tonsils out as a young child & It prevented me from sleeping, hurt to eat, drink & even swallow. I mentioned my headache being pretty bad & thought maybe it was due to my unusual fever & BP being elevated from the pain. I purposely pointed out my lymph nodes near my throat felt swollen hoping she would check for infection. She quickly shined a light in my throat & checked my ears. She did NOT feel for swollen lymph nodes. She did however examine the pain in my lower left abdomen & asked if I had a recent colonoscopy! (Yes, I actually just had one 2 months ago!) The hands on, "physical exam" was very quick & very limited! She sat back down in front of her laptop & to my surprise said, if you hadn't just had a colonoscopy, I would suspect diverticulitis! Your urine was perfectly clean, no sign of a kidney infection etc. Even more disturbing.. she said she recommends me going directly to the ER & having a CT of my head done to rule out a possible Brain bleed!! (I chose a walk-in clinic so that I could avoid sitting in an ER for hours). She said she could have a blood test done there at the clinic BUT the results would take longer to come back & the ER would get them back immediately! I asked how MUCH longer for the results if I got the blood test done while I was right then & there? she said "oh, not until tomorrow & I'm not working tomorrow!!" (wait, WHAT? So, she's the ONLY medical professional at the Vandy clinic that can read a blood test result??). I left that office feeling less than impressed & surely didn't feel ANY relief as to why I was running a fever, throat on fire & a pounding headache! After thinking about it all evening, I called the Vandy clinic the next morning & expressed my frustration with the medical staff during my visit the prior morning & they suggested I come back in. When I checked in, the gentleman asked for my insurance card & without hesitation said, that will be $25. I explained I had just been charged $100 the morning before & he pointed to my card & said, no, it says right here.. "Urgent Care Co-pay $25" The individual at check in the day before just didn't take the time to READ! Infuriating! The MA & PA that I saw on Monday were 100% better & the PA immediately ran a Strep test & a Covid test & explained EVERYTHING to me. I waited the few minutes for the test results & he came back in with the results of my test that I did not have strep throat but indeed, did have the new strain of Covid "razor-blade strain", which explained my throat hurting so bad! This explained the fever, the headache etc. He was kind, professional & direct. I am so glad I called & went back in the following day & left with a diagnosis.

About 10 days ago I experienced the most intense throat and ear pain of my life…read more To save time, I walked in to the Little Clinic at Green Hills Kroger. Upon promptly collecting my co-pay and closely examining my ability to pay, the Nurse Practitioner Amy started her examination. She had a good idea that it was allergies as everyone has them right not, but she agreed to take a swab for Strep. After poking me very quickly somewhere in my mouth (defiantly not where my pain was). I was confused and specifically asked Amy, "Did you get that already?", to which she replied, "Oh yeah, that should work". Needless to say my preliminary test came out negative for Strep, but I was prescribed an anti-biotic and a bunch of allergy meds. Three days later, I stared feeling better. Then I got a phone call from Ali, another Nurse practitioner at the clinic. She said that my lab processed came back negative for Strep and it is most likely allergies and I need to stop taking my anti-biotic. I never heard of stopping of anti-biotic once it has been started, but I am not healthcare provider so I complied. Three days later after stopping my anti-biotic, I am once again faced with the most intense throat and ear pain on my life. Because I was desperate I went back to the same Little Clinic. Ali, the person who told me to stop the meds, was the nurse practitioner who was seeing patients that day. After once again promptly collecting my co-pay and closely examining my insurance we were back in the room. My symptoms and presentation, this time with a 101 something fever, got Amy to take a swab test on my throat. To her credit, she really got into in, as she screwed her swab across the very back most painful part of my throat. Five minutes later it was confirmed by the quick test that I had Strep. I am 100% confident that I have now had it for 8 days. Upon sharing my frustration with being misdiagnosed I asked what was the plan of action. Ali suggested another anti-biotic and some ear drops. I was so desperate I was going to take anything as my pain was so intense. I was very concern with not finishing my anti-biotic and strep bacteria becoming resistant to the antibiotic. I asked for Ali to see if there is a test to determine sensitivity or resistance. She did not know the answer, so she called her supervising physician. I am so glad she did. The supervising physician suggested a different family of the anti-biotic, as I am most likely was now resistant to penicillin based meds. Great. I am almost home free. Ali was very nice and put up with my complaints and frustration of having strep around my three children for 8 days, one is which is only 7 months old. I can't even begin to imagine the pain it would cause a little guy. Upon check out I reviewed my patients instructions. My new anti-biotic was not on the list. She prescribed Augmentin (penicillin based product) and no ear drops. She did not pay attention. She did not verify. I asked her why the list was not updated. She was flustered and said "I am sorry I made a mistake, can I have the list back?", I said, 'No, I want to have a record of your office continuous mistakes and incompetence". She updated my list with tears in her eyes based on what we discussed previously and went on my way. There were other example of incompetence, inaccurate information, inability to look at individuals vs making everyone an allergy patient. I used to be a big fan of nurse practitioners, but some of the programs must not deliver the caliber of people that need to be in medicine. It probably has to to with lack of training or poor hiring practices by the The Little Clinic. I am done venting.

He has been to CareNow before and they KNOW his history. He also has trouble providing samples on command, so he takes his sample at home, and brings it with him. This last time, the check in attendant didn't take the sample. label it, and put it in a fridge. By the time the physician got to him, it was worthless. Fine. He brought a fresh sample the following day. Receptionist said she would take it back immediately. No response from them. He called them TWICE on Monday. The second time, the staff told him it would take 5 to 7 days to get the results. What? Wrong! Every other urgent care center that both of us have been to has been able to confirm a UTI on the spot! UTIs can be deadly for immunocompromised individuals. They couldn't even bother to prescribe him a basic antibiotic. I get that you don't want antibiotic induced resistance, but, if you can't get a test back for a week, then you need to 1) prescribe an antibiotic, or 2) be honest and say you don't have the ability to test for a UTI so we can go elsewhere. This place is setting itself up for failure. It will most likely be sued into oblivion at some point.

The Doctor proceeds to tell me "We don't write presriciptions for antibiotics, We only give out antibiotics if you have Pneumonia, Brocnhitis or strep". Any idiot knows you're supposed to take antibiotics so you don't get the aforementioned. Big Surprise I would need to take X-Rays and series of other unnecessary expensive tests. This is my 3rd experience with Vanderbilt acting in an unethical money grabbing manner. I did get a second and third opinion as I had never heard anything so stupid. A proper reputable medical professional who gave me the prescriptions I needed was appalled at was a told by the clowns at Vanderbilt and confirmed they were just scamming me to spend money. Vanderbilt = Money over peoples health. I do have an onset of Pneumonia and Vanderbilt was not willing to help until I was sick rather than treating the infection I already have to prevent it from escalating. Unbelievable. I'm sure they will send my insurance company a $400.00 bill. I won't get into the details here, but I had the same experience attempting to secure a primary care provider at Vanderbilt. I went in healthy simply to meet the doctor and was coerced into spending money on tests I didn't need. I told them I had just had that panel of blood work done and knew I was not in any danger. After tests came up confirming this, they still tried to blow smoke up my rear end and convince me that I needed their help and monitoring. Everything they told me was out of alignment with the medical specialist I was seeing and in fact not scientifically sound. Stay away from these facilities . The most overrate name in medical! I'm sure government and Pharma funded judging by the amount of misinformation, fear mongering and bullying.
