This is for Sunday nights. They have a mature band that plays rock and blues music. The singer has…read moresuch passion, its like watching Joe Cockers' brother do his thing. Its a smaller wooden dive bar with reasonable beer prices. During the day, there are outdoor seats as well. I would not have stopped by here, but the music enticed me.

Dickens is a drink-to-get-plowed bar on the Stavanger waterfront…read more They sell beers that go down easy and don't taste like much so you will have thirty eight of them. They have sports on TV. The food is all globalized food like pizza. * * * Why am I bothering to review it at all? Because globalized food in Norway is not the same as the globalized food you get at home. The nachos they serve here are a definite eyebrow raiser. These are neither Texas nachos nor Mexican nachos. They take flat circular tortilla chips out of the supermarket bag and layer them on a pizza board. They cover these with cheese so that the concoction melts into a pancake. There are chips ON TOP of the pancake, and jalapenos on top of that. The top chips char which is okay. Your nachos now have a top. The whole thing is served with a bowl of room temperature salsa out of the jar that you dump on top. Note that Norwegians make pancakes and they make very good pancakes. So turning nachos into a pancake is a natural for them. I prefer Tex-Mex nachos, but these were an interesting change of pace.

Had the seafood chowder that was liquidy milky (not pudding type) and satisfying. It had shrimp, crab, clam and a bunch of herbs. The super soft bread and garlic ranch served with it matched. Lot of people were ordering the mussels and that would've been our next order but we had to meet friends elsewhere. Outside, it was festive and a little loud from the neighboring restaurant/club next door. I enjoyed it, but if you want more peace, go to the 2nd floor. Beautiful views. The large tourist ships stop right at front.

Skagen is the vegan friendly option for people wanting to eat on the waterfront in Stavanger…read more They have real food for non-vegans too. The real food people eat better than the vegans here. * * * The vegan options are heavy on soy meat substitutes. Pescatarian wife looked at all that soy substitute and went for fish with no sauce. Her fish with no sauce was pretty dull - and so was her vegan rhubarb dessert. She picked at her meal. * * * I was ready for a hardy Nordic feast. They offer "small" dishes and "large" dishes, but the "small" dishes are full size platters that will make you waddle home. I had the platter of gravad lax with rye bread, potato salad and mustard sauce on the side. Magnificent salmon. fine mustard sauce, rye bread to kill for and potatoes to provide contrast. Was the salmon better with or without the mustard sauce? I debated this question for hours. To assist me in my great ponderings was a magnificent glass of first rate aquavit. It was mild rather than forceful, and I like my spirits forceful. But things were eminently pleasant nonetheless. * * * We were in Stavanger the week after Summer Solstice. They aren't kidding when they talk about the land of the midnight sun. The sun never sets on the Stavanger waterfront. The golden light goes on for hours and hours and hours. The sun sets very slowly. With enough beer or aquavit in your system, you set very slowly. You watch the people walk up and down the docks. You comment on the state of humanity. You pick at the various juicy morsels still left on your plate. The sun hangs there golden and glorious. A fine way to spend an evening Assuming you are not trying to forget your soy sausage.
