Cardiff Law Centre is part of a national network of law centres that covers England, Wales and Northern Ireland. This network was established in 1978, adopting the name: Law Centres Federation. It is a charity and a company limited by guarantee. The LCF supports and promotes Law Centres® in most major cities within its remit.
The support offered by the LFC differs from centre to centre, but often includes funding and staffing as well as assistance with decision-making.
The Cardiff Law Centre is well positioned on Clifton Street, right in the heart of where it is most likely to be needed. They offer free specialist advice on issues such as Welfare Benefits, Housing Law and Employment Law.
Cardiff Law Centre essentially provides an independent legal advice and representation service. It employs solicitors and specialists in areas of 'social welfare' law to help individuals and communities, targeting people who may be marginalised in society or who are experiencing discrimination. Most of their clients are disadvantaged. Their aim is to "discover the underlying causes of problems and take an holistic approach to solving those problems for both the client and the community".
Law Centres are funded by the Legal Services Commission and Local Councils. Community Projects are often funded by Trusts and Charities such as the Big Lottery Fund.
A recent study by the New Economics Foundation found that for every pound spent on providing a case work service, the Law Centre generates in excess of £10 in benefits including savings to government.
