The Variety Plate w pork pupusa
Victoria B.

Our first experience with Salvadoran food, and we loved it! We arrived in Huntsville State Park after a long drive and a struggle to put up the tent. Grateful that they were open on a national holiday AND on a Monday. Carbonero does a brisk takeout business as well. Recommended for the friendly employees and a distinctive menu. We especially recommend the plantains and the roasted chicken, but everything we tried was first rate.

Pupusas

It is all about the pupusas! These are some of the best I've ever had. My favorite is the mushroom ones but the cheese ones come in a close second. Be sure to put the cabbage slaw on top.

Chips and queso

Why 4 stars? Because that's where it comes out on the curve. --- --- --- I graduated 17 years ago from Sam Houston and have very fond memories of Huntsville. But I also had the eating habits of a typical college student. My monthly budget for food was about $12, so I didn't have many go-to restaurants. And when I come back to visit as a 38 year old with a big boy salary, it's pretty obvious that I'm not going to find the city to be a foodie paradise. Everything is operated by college kids. When I was in college, I was not exactly hyper concerned on delivering 5-star experiences for the customers of the business paying me minimum wage. It's a tough life for these small biz owners. So ultimately, I would rate Carbonero an overall 4, but a Huntsville 5. The tie breaker for me is that the final bill did not exactly represent Huntsville prices. But I thought it was a really solid experience overall. Chips and queso = 3 stars. My friend requested we get this and it didn't leave the greatest first impression. It was just okay at best. Combo Platter #2 = 4 stars. Steak, chicken, mashed potato pancake and the chaufa rice. Everything was solid. Nothing bad, nothing spectacular. The potato concoction was unique and delicious. I've never seen it on a menu before, but I'm not sure why because it's a great idea. Tres Leches = 4 stars. I finished with this and had mixed thoughts. It was really enjoyable, but it was served super cold and almost seemed like it had been sitting in a fridge for a while. But the taste could not be denied. It was very rich and heavy, so I'd recommend sharing. I get why this is pretty much the best restaurant in Huntsville according to Yelp and I'm glad I was able to finally experience it.

Flan and tres leches cake

Husband and I stopped here for lunch after a yelp search on our way from DFW to Galveston. Don't let the strip mall location or older interior fool you, this place has some good food. We shared a combo plate that had a steak, shrimp, pupusas, etc. The steak was delicious as were the shrimp. We also had guacamole and chips, the guacamole was so good and fresh and seasoned with lime. Since we shared a plate we each got a dessert, tres leches and flan. Both good, not great. The cake was a bit dry for me, I like a more wet tres leches. The flan was the better of the two imo. Service was good, very sweet ladies with good suggestions about the menu. I would definitely stop again when in the area. The steak and shrimp are worth it alone!

Shrimp ceviche

I came here 3 days ago and it's alr. The service was great. I love the flan, it's perfect. With the ceviche, I think cuz I'm more familiar with Mexican flavour so I need a little bit more sour and sweet. But it's good for me though.

But once I discovered this restaurant on Yelp, I knew I wanted to try it. It was hard to find the time because the hours listed on Yelp said it was only open on weekends, but it turns out, they recently changed their hours and are now open Wednesday-Sunday. Out of everything I ate, the pupusas were, by far, the best. All of them were great: the steak, chicken and pork. We also ordered the carne asada, which is listed as #6 on the menu. It was basically a skirt steak with rice, beans and a salad. The steak was okay -- a little tough and too done, but overall it hit the spot. The salad had no dressing to my knowledge, which was weird. The rice and beans were fine. Lastly, we finished with some banana bread, which was nice, but definitely not very sweet. I should probably eat more desserts like this that are less sugary, but I'm kind of addict at this point, so I do wish this had a little more of a sweet bite to it. Overall, this was a cool experience and I see why the ratings are so strong.

The papusa plate comes with 3 and also comes with a traditional cabbage salad and hot sauce. They offer multiple flavors. Regardless which flavor, they come very large and cheesy compared to most papusas I've tried. Very large portions. You get what you pay for here. Also the flavor is pretty good also. A bit bland, but comes with toppings and sauces that fill in what ever bit of spice or tang your taste buds desire. As I was waitinwaiting i saw others get their food and i could tell it was also delicious. Especially since every one destroyed their food with serious haste. So did we. Customer service was pretty slow i cant lie, but not too slow. I think the server was helpi g make food in he back so she would onOK.come out from time to time... until a nother worker showed up to help. Then we got a bit most service. The interior wasnt fancy, but it was clean. No bugs. Alao they didnt offer water, we had to order it. I feel like a lot of hispanic restaraunts ive been to have been like this. Im not a fan. Prices are darn cheap tho so they get a pass. I recommend this place and woold come back. Nothing special here so i wouldnt say come for a special date night. But to some plan old good and cheap food for dinner or lunch, this is a great spot. Parking is OK. The lot was pretty full when I arrived but the restaruant was only 1/3 full. I'm guessing the other establishments in this mini strip mall had customers also.

The food is delicious. The pupusas are huge and a very good value for the money. You might want to…read morecall in your order and pick them up. It takes a little bit of time to make good food.

The hostess stand was warm and welcoming, and we were seated immediately. It was just me and my daughter enjoying a little day together after her appointment nearby, and I'm so glad we decided to stop by. I've always loved this location -- the aesthetics are beautiful, and the greenery throughout the restaurant creates such a refreshing and inviting atmosphere. We started with the cheese pupusas, and they were amazing! My daughter (who's in culinary at school) had actually made pupusas in her kitchen lab that same day, so she convinced me we had to try them -- and she was right. They were absolutely delicious and the perfect appetizer to share. For our entrées, she ordered the chicken enchiladas with rice and beans and said they were really good. I had the garden green salad topped with grilled shrimp and grilled chicken -- so flavorful! The sauce on the salad was amazing, and I also ordered chimichurri on the side, which made it even better. The service truly stood out. Our waiter was welcoming and attentive, and we even had two managers stop by to check on us, which made us feel valued. It was such an enjoyable experience from start to finish. This visit was definitely better than our last one several months ago -- it felt superb this time. We will absolutely be back!

There were seven of us that showed up at 4 PM on Saturday. They weren't busy but took a while to get the table. My two children were with me and after asking a fourth time, I finally got a highchair, but they still didn't bring the booster seat for my son. I ordered the enchiladas and a mango margarita. The enchiladas à la Gloria were barely warm and the tortilla was tough and dry. My mango margarita was not good. I took four sips and that was it. My mother-in-law ordered the seafood soup, and it was scalding hot. She couldn't even eat it until the rest of us were already done. We ordered two orders of fried plantains (the chips) and just did not feel it was good value for the cost.

My wife and I each got two, and I would have ordered more if my wallet wasn't screaming, "No more, please!" I'll definitely be coming back just for pupusas to go. Those things might be my new food obsession. The plates we got were okay but nothing amazing. My wife got three loaded chicken tacos, and I had the fried chicken with plantains. The chicken was a bit dry, but the plantains were really good. The waitress was super nice and explained some of the menu since it's mostly in Spanish. Without her, we would have been totally lost. Also, the menu is huge, so we took a while to decide. The place itself is small and crowded with tiny tables, but that is exactly the kind of vibe you get at an authentic Salvadoran restaurant. The chef (and owner?) checked on us a couple of times, and you could tell he really cared about us liking the place. That kind of attention is rare. It's a bit pricey, especially for lunch. So like I said earlier, your best bet is to get a bunch of pupusas at $3.49 each. Honestly, three or four of those would have been filling enough and cheaper than the big plates. Bottom line: Pupusas are the real stars here!
