This is a cool barbecue spot located at Bing's Landing. There is boat access behind the restaurant if you want to come via water and ample parking if you're traveling via car. When we walked in, we were greeted by friendly employees and they let us know to review the menu, order at the counter, and snag an available table (seating is first come, first serve). There were a couple of open tables when we arrived so we chose one on the covered, screened in patio. There's a nice view of the water and boats coming in there so it made for perfect ambience. There are speakers outside to announce your name when your order is ready. Pick up your trays, hit up the sauce station, and dig in to your food! I ordered the slider trio so I could taste multiple meats. There is one turkey, one brisket, and one pulled pork slider. My boyfriend ordered the pulled pork plate and we also ordered two smoked St. Louis ribs ala carte to try. For sides I chose mac and cheese and collard greens and he chose Mac and cheese and baked beans. They swapped the baked beans and collard greens on our plates, but it wasn't a big deal since we always taste each other's food anyway. The ribs were really tasty and fall off the bone tender. The brisket was tender and flavorful, and the pulled pork was also delicious. I tried some sweet sauce, gold sauce, and hot bbq sauce and all are nice accompaniments, though they don't appear to be made in house, at least not the sweet and gold. My boyfriend enjoyed his pulled pork and liked the ribs and taste of my brisket. The turkey impressed me since sometimes barbecue spots don't focus on it as much, but this one was just as good as the beef and pork. The baked beans are uniquely flavored and full of meat. The collards were tasty and had a nice little kick. The mac and cheese was just average in my opinion, but even average Mac and cheese is good in my book. Portion sizes are large and prices are very reasonable. Overall, this is a good bbq joint at a cool location. It wasn't the best barbecue I've ever had, but I'd still return since it was tasty, the people were friendly, and the atmosphere is great. After lunch, we walked around the park and checked out a neat archaeological site they have that shows some remnants of old plantations that used to stand there and explored some trails near the water. Came here first on a recommendation of a local and pretty late in the day (about an hour before closing) the place was packed. Not quite every table packed but all tables outdoors were packed. Ordered Brisket Dinner and Burnt Ends, got both (but I didn't realize how much I had lucked out), Chicken and a Burger (yeah not everyone's a BBQ fan, go figure) everything was amazing, we didn't eat it... We inhaled it! And prices are more then reasonable, so we decided to try it again but 2 days we had tried no Burnt Ends an hour before the closing (popular items made daily!) so the last night we stayed in the are we just decided to order about 2 hours before and lucked out on Burnt Ends. Plenty of outdoor seating, and you can get your food to go and eat in the park-like area next to it, with a nice view of the water. Awesome if there is a good sunset. Such a great spot to check out after you've been on the boat all morning. We stopped in for lunch after our boat rental & were super impressed with the food. We had a group of 11 and had no problem finding seating during prime hours. You order at the counter insider & they call names over a loud speaker that projects outside so you can find seating and enjoy watching the boats come in and out of the dock while you wait. Our food came out super quick. I had the pulled pork plate with coleslaw and collards. The pork & slaw were SO good!!! I would definitely recommend them to anyone! The collards were unfortunately bland and I would opt for the green beans next time. We will for sure be back!! Only con is parking and the boat ramp can get super backed up and busy. The staff was very accommodating placing a phone order. I was specifically wanting to order a meat bundle, but they only do ala carte meat orders. I highly suggest offering a meat bundle on carry out orders. We didn't need sides, as we had salads and such at home. The Carolina vinegar and hot sauces were my favorite. You actually didn't even need them for the ribs. The ribs were the best IVE HAD! We also loved the smoked turkey! If you're craving ribs these are awesome! Tender and NOT soaked in sauce! While in the area we wanted some BBQ but didn't mind a bit of a drive from St Augustine for some place with good food and venue. We got a trifecta because they brought out great service with the food. We were a group of 6 and had no problems getting in, our food and a table on the deck overlooking the marina and sunset. It's not like this place needs another review, but I feel compelled to share our experience. We were headed on A1A to Ormond Beach and stumbled upon Captains. It was mid afternoon on Saturday and we were starved. Ordered pulled pork sandwiches with coleslaw and baked beans for sides. Sandwiches came on a nice big roll and were loaded, I mean loaded, with pulled pork. Sides were very good, baked beans were excellent. Left very satisfied with a pledge to return. Second Visit ....Mid Week Ordered pulled pork sandwich again, the Trio Combo and a side of ribs. Trio had pulled pork, brisket and chicken. All three were generous helpings. Pork was superb, brisket was dry but tasty and chicken flavorful. Sides again were coleslaw and baked beans. Ribs while meaty were a little fatty for our tastes - they needed to be rendered more. Front end of the place was clean and organized. Back end was a beautiful screened in porch with plenty of seating over looking a river. Very scenic any time of day. The middle section of the place, where you pick up food and choose sauces needs some work. It wouldn't take a lot of effort to clean up that area and keep monitored. Probably needs a women's touch to take it from "fraternity" look to a more appealing presentation. Quality of food was good to excellent. Value was good, prices were fair for quantity of food provided. Counter staff were friendly but could be more engaging. I recommend Captains without reservation, but suggest you go there hungry. read more

The main reason why I'm giving this place two stars only is the temperature of the food - it's cold . I ordered pulled pork tacos and I was very excited about it. Cutting it short I have to send it back twice because it was cold. The tortillas were (I think ) straight from the fridge because even after two times putting tacos in "warmer" they were still cold. I was assuming that after the second time I've sent it back I would receive steaming hot plate - wrong I was. The meet inside was warm but cheese was cold and not melted at all and tortillas still simply cold. Overall not a good experience. The food would've been tasty otherwise but the temperature of it made it not a good experience at all. Stopped for bbq. Have had some of best pork bbq in SC and brisket in KC and Texas. This place was good. Staff very nice and professional. Location large and nice views of water. Smell of smoke in pking lot always good sign. Had pulled pork and easy ok. Good quality but little tough, could use more smoke. Ribs we good with nice smoke. Beef good. Had coleslaw which we liked. Potato salad excellent. Beans were very good. Brunswick stew excellent probably our favorite item. Nice place good quality food just could use bit more smoke. I'm not sure how this place gets so many great reviews. Maybe we came on an off night? Ordered take our and ate on the picnic tables by the water outside the restaurant last night. We had brisket, pulled pork, buttered corn, cornbread, baked beans and mac and cheese. The only thing even somewhat enjoyable was the brisket. It was nicely cooked. Otherwise this BBQ food was sub-mediocre :(. The pulled pork was greasy and mushy, the corn was inedible and had zero flavor, the Mac and cheese was very soft/mushy but had a nice cheesy flavor at least, the baked beans were OK and the corn bread was blah. Either it was an off night or this is just what "good" Florida barbecue is. I'm from Jersey/NYC area and we have phenomenal BBQ joints so this was not comparable. They do give very nice portions for a great price and the online ordering was a breeze. read more

We ordered the Grand slam combo with two sides and cornbread for $21.99. this platter is enough to share for two people. Choose three different meats pork beef, chicken, and kielbasa sausage. After a morning of beach cleanup at Marineland, we were hungry and happened upon Captain's BBQ as a nearby option. It was rated well, so we decided to take a chance. Nestled in some trees, next to Bing's Landing, the rustic building offers inside and outside seating with views of the water. The menu offered all the BBQ joint staples (pulled pork, smoked turkey and chicken, ribs and kielbasa, as well as a selection of specialty burgers and some other sandwiches and meals. Sides include the traditional (cole slaw, beans, collard greens) and the slightly unusual (beet and feta salad, cucumber salad). There was a small line but the employee was happy to answer questions and make recommendations. I asked if i should choose the cucumber salad or the Mac and cheese, and was informed that the Mac was not homemade, so I took a pass on that. Desserts were also available at the counter, and we will have to make another visit for some of those. My pulled pork was probably among the best I've had. Moist and not at all fatty with great flavor. I used a little (unmarked) sauce to give some sweet and tangy complement but it wasn't even needed. The cole slaw was fresh and crunchy and the cucumber salad was creamy with a surprising hint of dill. My mom's 1/4 chicken was piping hot and her order of beet and feta salad was divine. Other orders at our table included a plain cheese burger and the Cuban sandwich, both seemed very good. (My son had the Mac and cheese as his side and it was just ok, which would be my only disappointment). We will definitely be back, especially since we are loving the beaches near Marineland and plan to spend more time in the area. read more

The St Louis ribs were great, fall off the bone, yumminess. My husband got the burnt ends sandwich. One bite into the sandwich and he opted to not eat the bun, it was a bit stale. The burnt ends were good, but nothing spectacular. The baked beans were unique and flavorful, Mac-n-cheese not so much. Waited about 15 minutes to order, staff were nice, checked on us a few times. We stumbled upon this place driving around St. Augustine and Palm Coast. The setting is absolutely breathtaking, located at Brink's Landing under live oaks graced with mounds of Spanish moss. The restaurant is not fancy, adopting the rustic BBQ restaurant look, and plays good ol' blues softly in the background. You order at a counter, then wait for your name to be called so you can pick up your meal. I ordered the lunch portion of ribs, which had just enough chew and delicious flavor that didn't need BBQ sauce, but I tried a few anyway. There's a small air conditioned inside with expansive screened outside sporting beautiful views of the intercoastal. They're sort of embedded within a park with a launch. Lunch launch lol. Anyway, ribs were pretty good. Tender and actually smoked, which is slowly becoming unusual. Rub was sort of sugary to me but that's a subjective thing, really. Not bad. Slaw was nice seemed home made. Beans were fair to me, too much meat ratio but I bet most people wouldn't complain about that. Wasn't keen on the flavor either, but again, bbq's so terribly subjective. Overall, very good. Definitely come back. Hostess was quirky and fun and helpful; even made time for small talk. I'd return because I liked some of the food and it's in a nice park. You order in the front. Behind that there's some seating and they call your name when your order is ready. Then you can go to the screened porch in the back. To your left will be the utensils, sauces, and a basin to wash your hands. We tried 2 meats, 4 sides, and the cornbread. I much preferred the ribs to the brisket, so I'd get the former next time. I was surprised that there was no barbecue sauce with the meats. I might have enjoyed them, at least the brisket, more with it. I only discovered later that it was self serve. A staffer recommended the sweet and tangy sauces. My favorite side was the tasty baked beans. You need some vegetables with your meat, and I preferred the green beans to the cole slaw. Neither of us much like the mac and cheese. There was also an optional piece of cornbread, but we didn't much like it. They had desserts too, but we didn't try them. I enjoyed the meal, and the best items would make for a fine meal, so I'll probably return 3-4 stars. One of the nicest things about this place, on a nice day, is that it's in Bing's Landing. They have a dock, were it's fun to watch the boaters come and go. On the south side there's a nice area to walk in and some water birds perched on a tree.
