I called and my brother called Suzanne separately after hurricane Gordon hit . She assured us that all was good and the media was blowing things out of proportion. Well, she lied . I think it was because she didn't want us to cancel our trip. She told us the chamber of commerce advised her not to give any information about the flooding. Really? Our lives are at stake! Even her street and driveway was flooded. We could not do several things we planned because of the flooding. Suzanne would not answer any of our questions with direct answers .to anything we asked her about anything. I asked her which restaurants were within walking distance and she said " I don't know" She is the owner! Really?! Breakfast was very sparse . She did not offer seconds. I left still hungry. She had a lot of rules like not being allowed in the kitchen and not being able to turn the cooling system up or down as much as we would like. She said it was a retirement community and we had to be quiet, and also the tv did not work. the rest of her guests that were suppose to come the next day never showed up (probably because of the flooding) We left 2 days early because of all this. Suzanne never offered to refund us even one night. BEWARE.

#1 STAY HERE! Stay here, stay here. Do it. Do it now…read more Coming through Whiteville looking for a place to stay? Look no further. Madison house is a gorgeous Victorian gem, decorated in appropriate era furniture and art, this house is lovely. It is a little worse for wear, but honestly I'd rather stay here than any of the chains. We stayed in the king room without our own tv. Most rooms are queen rooms, but all have 4 poster beds and lovely decorating. The pool and the porch. Wrap around porch was lovely place in the morning. The pool is delightful and surrounded by plants everywhere. Breakfast was simple and delicious. I asked for scrambed eggs, and they came fluffy with cheese. Perfectly crisp bacon, toast was lovely, and the banana nut muffin was quite good. The coffee is AWESOME! The proprietor is a lovely woman who is friendly and delightful.

Of course the kitchen is gourmet country chic, and the pool is a more modern touch, but the classic architecture and artwork that adorn the mini mansion coupled with the destination's crown jewel, Mrs. Yvonne, make it a wonderful place to relax, rest, and be at ease. Mrs. Yvonne is a classic southern woman with a welcoming "down-home" demeanor. She's a pleasure to chat with, if that's your thing, and a good cook to boot! It was nice to take a moment to talk to her and it did my heart good in the wake of losing my dad. We are sure to return to such a charming place!

The bathroom was very nice and clean although I was a bit confused where the toilet paper was at since there wasn't any holder for it. The room was very spacious and the bed was very comfortable. The only bad thing I could say is, much like another bed and breakfast I stayed in, we couldn't control the temperature or run a fan to make any noise. This was a ok for me, but just a word of caution. The temperature of our room was always good even when it was cold at night. The breakfast was a little different than I've had at B&Bs before as it was a buffet style with mostly cold items. There were some premade omelettes that could be microwaved, but I was good with a bagel and a big sized bowl of cereal. The small selection of pasteries was great! When I made a reservation, they recommended reserving a tram service which would take you and your bags from the ferry to the B&B. I skipped this part since it's not very far of a walk and I thought we could stretch our legs. The free good cart is definitely a HUGE plus. We were able to go across the island and back zig zagging some and making some stops. The free WiFi also kept us entertained while it was raining outside. If I could afford to come back another time, I would definitely stay here again.

It is decorated in a French theme and has a lot of charm throughout. We were lucky enough to stay in the room adjacent to the sitting room. It was very spacious and had a huge bathroom with a claw foot tub and pedestal sink. The locations of the French House is also great. It is in a historic part of Wilmington and taking a walk around the neighborhood shows how rich in history this part of town is. It is also walking distance (4 blocks) from the river and a quick 15 minute ride to Wilmington Beach. What makes The French House 5 stars is that it is run by a wonder hostess, Janice. She is kind and accommodating to her guests' needs. We arrived and found a fruit plate and mini refrigerator stocked with waters and soda. She gave us maps of downtown and recommendations of where to eat. She knew our names before we even introduced ourselves and always made us feel at home. When I burned my feet at the beach, she searched high and low for some aloe, even making phone calls to neighbors to find some. The breakfasts she provided always included some fresh berries, yogurts, homemade scones, and some sort of pastry (one day we had croissants, one day we had blueberry strudel). My only wish is that there were some kind of protein provided! We had a truly wonderful stay here at the French House. My only complaint was the other guest that was staying there at the same time as us...she had a guest stay late one night and rather than sitting on the front porch or in her room, she sat in the sitting room right in front of our room and kept us up for a good portion of the night. However, I will still give this place 5 stars because Janice and the house itself were excellent. We will be back :)

There is no official front desk, so we spoke with the people at the stand by the parking lot, and they were able to share information and assist bringing my parents' bags to their room, up a flight of stairs. There's a small sitting area on the balcony outside the rooms, and each room has its own unique decor. We love the eye for detail and design. Our room is The Hamptons, with two double beds and a separate room with TV and sitting area and desk (though it is open to the bedroom because no doors exist in the doorway; it would be cool if they had sliding doors to separate the spaces). The bar downstairs is lively and fun with amazing cocktails and a few small bite options, and it operates from the backyard yard of the Inn, so be prepared for a bit of noise from that and the street to filter into the room especially on weekends. This bar doubles as the Concord Espresso House that serves amazing espresso drinks and pastries in the morning. The indoor seating is low key elegant, a great spot to sit and start your morning.
