Mike was a super nice bartender where he explained people who frequent are regulars. Got seated promptly by the host when full party arrived and when table reservations were ready. We shared the seafood skins which was amazing and my crab dish portion was huge that I had leftovers to bring home. Bread was served prior to our meal where it was nice and warm with individual butter for each person. Exceptional staff and service. Celebrated my birthday here on Friday night as a first-timer. We got seated right away, and service was consistent and prompt. Everything was amazing, from the cocktails to the appetizers, main course and desert. The servers were very polite and professional. I really loved the ambiance. It felt like we were dining in an old ship. The bar area was lively with the live music and regular patrons having a great time. We have to hang out longer next time to enjoy the music in the bar area. One of our favorites. We don't go too often, but do try to make it there once a quarter or so. Surf and turf is ALWAYS prepared perfectly for my taste. Ambiance is wonderful. The crab legs were delicious as always. I recommend upgrading your salad to a potato! (The salad is basic) whoever was grilling the steaks and meat that night was off their game. We ordered the meat medium rare and it came well done. We had to send the meat back and just opted to eat our crab legs as well as the bread and salad. There were a few other people around us (it's small where we were sitting) that had to send their meat back as well. They were accommodating and took the steak off our bill. We came here as walk-in. We were seated within 15mins as it was not as packed, although, I highly recommend making a reservation. We started with a couple of Blue Ocean drink (mild and delicious). We were then seated in a booth next to the window. The place is a bit dimly lit, vibey and comfortable. We ordered Appetizer: Crab Stuffed Mushroom( sooo good) and Crab Quesadillas (stuffed with a chunkful of crabs). Main Entree's: Prime Rib and Red King Crab. Went to Captain Jack's last night for our co-workers birthday dinner. We had several ladies attending to our drinks and they were really on target, never having to ask for refills. We brought several bottles of wine (corkage free Thursdays) so that made for an additional plus. Our main waiter Anthony was so funny and had a fabulous personality. Told some great stories of his experiences. Really made us feel special and was attentive to all of our requests. We weren't in any hurry and asked if he could space out the courses which he did. I hate getting the main course delivered when I'm only half way done with my salad and didn't have to worry about that with Anthony in charge. Timing of all food was perfect. I had the crab, my wife had the prime rib and both were cooked to perfection as we have become to expect from Captain Jack's. Our other friends had various dishes including lamb, halibut and chicken teriyaki. All enjoyed their entrees and agreed this was an absolutely fantastic dinner. The dude and I came to Captain Jacks in Huntington Beach on 10/02/21 after the Sam Hunt Concert. We arrived around 10pm maybe later and saw live music which was so pleasant to my ears! We should have sat at the bar. But we were seated away from the live music which was fine. Very intimate romantic setting which honestly wasn't in the mood for. It was long day for us and I just wanted to listen to calming music over drinks with my love. The staff was fantastic and friendly! They brought us out bread and butter along with the menu. I ended up getting the Pama-Tini which I rated it 5/10 it was too strong tasted like pure alcohol :( not the worse but not the best. The dude ended up getting the Spiked Palmer my rating was 3/10 I didn't like it at all but the dude loved it and rated it 7/10. I did finish my drink but it took a while sip after sip and I think the dude finished it as I couldn't. We were very indecisive about the menu as we didn't want a meal MEAL but something to hold us over to the morning by brunch. We agreed upon the Crab quesadilla which I rated it 7/10 and the dude 8.5/10. It was good quesadilla but not $26 dollars good. For me, it needed flavor. But then again for Captain Jacks it was alright. The dude who is not a fan of CRAB really enjoyed it and I'm not a fan of crab either but it needed more kick to make it memorable. We ended up getting dessert and the way they present it is horrible!!!! In a good way. They literally bring out a display of all their desserts and I can't say no and Captain Jack knows that too! So I ended up with the Strawberry Cheesecake 8/10 really good but could have been colder. It felt warm to me. Overall, we loved the vintage feel of Captain Jacks. Enjoyed the decor. Wish we tried more of their food but went the safe route. The drinks in my opinion need revamping or I just need to pick better drinks! Captain Jack's is a local favorite and always popular. Reservations recommended. My cousins and I meant to stop by a long time ago after our Duffy Boat outing nearby, but the wait was something crazy like 2-3 hours. Recently we had reasons for celebrations, and lessons learned, we were wise to make a reservation for dinner. When we arrived slightly early, we checked in with the hostess and was instructed to wait at the bar. We ordered a few drinks, and just FYI you'll have to close out before going to your table. They were unable to transfer it to our main check. Service was very nice and they work as a team to take care of the tables... however... due to the pandemic they seem incredibly understaffed. Not holding this against them since it seems to be an industry wide issue. But definitely don't come here if you're in a rush. Captain Jack's is known for their King Crab Legs, and secondly their Prime Rib, but they serve a variety of seafood items. All entrees include salad, rice, hot bread and butter, house salad and house made dressings. We shared some appetizers to start. We had the Shrimp Cocktail ($21.75) which came with only 4 shrimps, but they were jumbo huge shrimps. Perfect for our group to have one of each. We also had a half dozen of Oysters ($19.95) cause my cousin knows me so well and loves me. Unfortunately the oysters were of a subpar quality. For this price point, I expect better. I recommend Shucks Oyster Bar for any true oyster connoisseurs. For our entrees, my cousin's son had a New York Steak ($49.95). My cousins and I opted for their daily special which was 12 oz Prime Rib and King Crab Legs ($ Market Price, probably expensive). I asked for extra hot butter. The King Crab Legs were amazing and definitely worthy of all the hype. I can probably eat this stuff everyday if I afforded it. Very indulgent. The Prime Rib was cooked to a perfect medium rare, a bit fatty of a cut for us that night, and my cousins said not as good as it was on prior visit. I thought it was decent, but definitely not on 5 Crowns/Lawry's level. For dessert, we kept asking for a dessert menu. I think we asked at least 5 staff members and they all kept saying to give them a minute. It was probably another 30-60 minute before someone came by with a dessert tray. That's nice but I would have preferred for any one of those people to tell me what my options were instead of waiting that long. My cousin had the cheesecake and his wife and I shared the glorious Mud Pie. I love that they make it in house with Haagen Dazs' Coffee Ice Cream but the "crust" was so hard and thick we struggled to cut into it. Still delicious though. A very celebration worthy meal!! This was the second year that we came back to Captain Jack's and it won't be our last!! If we lived in CA this would be a place we would frequent often. It's perfectly decorated from nautical touches to lots of dark wood and fish tanks. My young nephew and niece love sitting next to the tanks. My family had the Lobster, Sea Bass, Halibut and I had the Seafood Scampi! ALL were incredible, but my 10 year old nephew said I ordered the BEST! The scallops were huge and delicious! An institution in Sunset Beach, I have been coming to Captain Jack's for birthdays and anniversaries, trying to stop in once a year for their Surf and Turf dinners. Yet living overseas, I haven't been able to make it in on my birthday since 2016, this year being the first time since then I'm around in early September. A memorable experience even before being seated, the staff are that fine balance of professional and personable, a perfect fit for the authenticity of this place, which has been keeping it real since 1965. There's no question on what to order, going with the Prime Rib and Crab Legs, a monstrous plate, but worth the effort. You can entertain an appetizer, but the main event is the Surf and Turf. Captain Jack's is quintessentially Southern California, and specifically Sunset Beach. There's an intangible vibe, like that smell of the bonfires at Bolsa Chica as you approach up the coast. We started with our usual drinks which did not come until our meal. We tried to tip off people and ask about our drinks, but people were just very busy on May 23rd. This is very unusual for Captain Jacks as their service is usually impeccable. Our main server was nowhere to be found which is very unusual. Even when our appetizer and salads were dropped off, we tried to ask about our drinks, but they dropped him off so fast. We didn't catch their attention. Then our entrée came, which was of course crab legs. I have always claimed that Captain Jacks has the world's best crab legs. In fact, I will not even order them other places because nobody compares to Captain Jacks. That is when I do order crab legs like an ocean ocean 48. I'm disappointed because I'm comparing them to Captain Jacks. The crab legs we got licked as though they had grill marks on the outside of the shell. This was new to us. These crab legs were so dry and you know that scene from Christmas vacation with Chevy Chase opens up the turkey that is so dry and it just there's nothing inside the turkey That is the experience that we had with the crab legs. I thought maybe we were getting punked! I was so surprised because we cracked open what appeared to be thick large crab legs and they were practically empty inside. Not our typical experience at Captain Jack's. I would have said something to our server, but our server was missing in action for most of the night.
