Oh my Lord, was this good. My son and I were in New England on vacation earlier this month, where we feasted on several rounds of lobster rolls. We started remembering how good they were earlier today, which led, of course, to cravings. I'd heard good things about the offerings at Caplinger's, and we were NOT disappointed. DELICIOUS. Pretzel buns (a nice alternative to the traditional buttered hot dog buns) absolutely stuffed with big chunky bites of lobster meat laced with celery and mayo. I scooped about half the filling out to save for lunch tomorrow and was still totally satisfied. My son's not really one for sauces and garnishes, but devoured every bite of his. And at a very reasonable $15 per roll, these were a few bucks cheaper than what we got in New Hampshire and every bit as good. I do the traditional Italian fish feast for Christmas eve so I scout out the best places to buy it. I had looked at Caplinger's last year but since everything is marked price varies I assumed it was overpriced. I was wrong the price may vary but not off the norm. I bought the scallops, dry, which means they aren't stored in a preserving liquid which I think gives them an off taste. They were wonderful. Sweet large firm just perfect. Last year we went to Maryland to purchase fish for Christmas. Yes, I'm that fussy and there is a wonderful Moroccan place in Delaware we love. So, we used to come to this place quite frequently because they have the best seafood in Indy. Still do in our opinion. Reason for the stars is the service. The service used to be very fast and you would receive your order within minutes after placing your order. Today it took well over 25 minutes to get our order and it was just for 3 sandwiches. The people that ordered after us were getting their "dinners" before we even received our order. When we did finally receive our food, it was cold. This is not normal for this location. I have never had cold food from here. I don't know what has changed since the last time we were here but it is definitely not for the better. Definitely disappointed at this visit and based on this visit alone, I am not really sure if I would recommend this place. Absolutely the best place to get seafood in the area, or any area that I've ever visited. Yesterday I ordered a lobster melt. It was glorious. Gobs of lobster meat. Huge. It was all I ate that day. I heard great things about this place from many people. However, it was not my cup of tea. The seafood was just mediocre to me, it's your typical fried seafood place. When I walked in the employees were standing around and chatting. The area designated for to go order pickup I stood at for about 2 minutes and was not helped. I went around the corner and the guy then gave me my food. This place is half sit down and half actual seafood market. The seafood did look fresh so I might return to buy seafood if I'm in the area. I wouldn't make the trek from downtown to this area for it though. I will say that the clam chowder was the best part of my meal because of the fresh clams. I needed to season it a bit more at home, but other than that it was good. For the price and from other customers I've talked to- I just expected more and was let down. I'm hoping that I just caught them on an off day and that it's not usually like this but I'm not 100% sure I'd go here again in the future. read more

Caplinger's Shadeland: Stopped in early 5:30 Thursday after work. Crowd was light but significantly increased as our visit progressed. Unfortunately they only had two copies of the menu available . The menu display on wall was just the sandwich menu, however there was a full menu taped to the counter where orders are placed! So.... sufficient to use. My DH had 6 blue points, corn on cob and baked beans which he proclaimed excellent! My red beans & rice were great! This place is a hidden gem and one I wish I had known about sooner. Part seafood counter part restaurant, this place is packed with deliciousness! It is in a little strip that you might miss if you weren't looking for it. The people there seemed like regulars, and the casual atmosphere reminded me of a little seafood store in New Orleans, where life seems to pass a little slower and where the locals all gather. I went to the Caplinger's on Pendleton Pike and was over charged for a pound of shrimp. Their menu listed the pound of shrimp for $23.99, I was charged $29 and some change so you might was well say $30. All of their prices are $1 more than the Shadeland location. They do not have any scales so I was told that I had to pay by the quarter pound. I was very upset and told the lady at the window that I felt as if I was being ripped off! I did not want to pay for the shrimp but my kids were hungry! I will never go back to the Pendleton location. No fresh fish or seafood. read more

Love the fish! It is fresh and they do a great job of preparing it. Yes - we let them cook it for is and it is well worth it. This trip - we got whiting (which was the best), catfish, and perch. We had them fry it: though you can get it blackened or baked with different types of seasonings. My only complaint was that the perch was teeny tiny. It was very convenient. I called in the order, as I headed there and it was ready in about 15 minutes. I signed up for points and on this trip, for $10 worth of products. Five years ago.. so I went again the fish was just as salty as it was 5 yrs ago. If it ain't broke I get it I'm only one person. You heard the saying where's the beef! well where's the freakin fish!! All bun and a thin cat fillet. It was a wet mess catfish on a pretzel bun ooowee 20 bucks later 2 sandwiches and a tip. I'm done. Probably about a 2 oz by volume portion. The whiting was AMAZING. very buttery and perfectly cooked. Okra was okay. Could have used ranch or some additional seasonings. But seemed fresh and cooked nicely. Clam strips were pretty underwhelming. Same with the dipping sauces. Worst tartar sauce ever. It was Sweet! We definitely won't be back. Edit to one star. So up on the north side and tried it. Oh boy was that fish sandwich good. You can get it fried or grilled with lettuce, tomato and red onion with sweet pickles and tartar sauce.
