Lobster Roll Sandwich, Hushpuppies and Pepsi
    Brenda J.

Today I felt like a treat, so I ordered the lobster roll and a side of hush puppies! Yum YUm and YUM! Everything about how they season the lobster roll appeals to me. The hush puppies are cooked just right for me.-crunchy outside & filled with delicious are a pleasant change from french fries or onion rings. Service was quick! I arrived before their evening rush that begins about 5:30 pm on weekdays. The ambiance is pleasant and friendly with an efficient "take out" vibe. Although, there are 5 tables in a separate section along with tables in the ordering area. It is also a fish market and sells seafood items in their refrigerated cases.

Caplinger's is both a fish market and a restaurant. For the restaurant, you order at the counter and they bring your food to the table. It is a very casual dining experience. We ordered the Caplinger Dinner. The menu indicates it's their number one seller. The dinner is served with two pieces of Basa fish, two sides, two hush puppies and tartar sauce. The cost is $18.89. The dinner was enough for us to split. It came with two large pieces of fried fish. For sides we got the fried okra and waffle fries. Both were very good. We really like the tartar sauce. It is very different than normal tartar sauce. It has a very creamy and smooth texture. More on a sweeter side. The dinners are a little pricey. However, as mentioned above, one dinner is enough for two individuals to split. We really like Caplinger's and will return.

Fish N' Chips, fries and hush puppies

I carried out from Caplinger's Fresh Catch last night. Being land locked in Indiana, it's hard to find fresh fish. Caplinger's is the exception. In addition to having a full menu of seafood, they also offer a well stocked inventory of fish in their market. I got the Fish N' Chips - 5 pieces of haddock filets battered and fried served with fries, 2 hush puppies and a side ( I chose red beans and rice). The meal satisfied my fish craving. All of the staff in the restaurant were friendly and helpful. We'll be back soon.

We got there at a not so busy time. Staff gave us plenty of time to review the menu. I picked out the grouper dinner with fried okra and waffle chips. Service was very friendly and great as we ordered at the counter. In about 10 minutes we dinner was served to my wife and I. The grouper I was tasting was awesome! So flaky and lightly buttered. The tartar sauce was also good which I used lightly on each piece. Just FYI malt vinegar packets are also available along with ketchup packets. Highly recommend this place for some of the best fish in town. One of the best things about this location is that it has plenty of seating and I would also recommend eating it there while it's fresh.

You go up to the counter order your food and pay - so everything is cooked to order and fresh, went with the 1lb order of fried oysters and they were big seasoned very well almost like they add a hot sauce to the batter it had a lil bit of a kick but nothing crazy it was just there and i really enjoyed it. In the past i have ordered the fried fish sandwich, fish and chips, and alligator bites (a few years ago when they first opened I didn't look to check if they still had) and have been pleased with everything. There isnt servers here you order and pay at the counter and grab your food when it is called ,, the staff working and taking your orders both at the restaurant/food side as well as the fresh uncooked seafood side are super friendly and attentive. The variety of fresh seafood in the cases looked very good and clean will definitely be back to try other things on the menu

After a morning of craft/hobby browsing at Lawrence Central High School, I had worked up a little appetite. I didn't want to go anywhere that would take too long, but my options between Lawrence Central and my house were kind of slim. Suddenly, I was driving up Shadeland Ave and I remembered Caplinger's Fresh Catch. My mind told me I'd be having a fried grouper sandwich. However, once my tastebuds sampled the smoked tuna salad, plans changed. I know it might not sound good, but I'm thinking a tub of it with some buttery crackers would be an excellent way to start your Thanksgiving FEASTivities! I still WILL have that fried grouper sandwich. Some day. #Getlostindiana

Crab cakes, Mac and cheese, red beans rice

Good: We were greeted with friendly staff and felt welcomed. The menu is easy to navigate and the staff at the front offered help if we needed it. Bad: I ordered a crab cake dinner. With 2 sides. I was given catfish with 2 sides. I told the young lady I ordered crabcakes. She goes oh you wanted a crabcake that's a different price you'll have to come pay the difference. I feel like I was treated like I changed my mind and wanted something different and I didn't. Maybe she misheard what I said when I ordered. When I went to the front to pay the difference the man asked me if I didn't hear her when she repeated the order to me. The order was never repeated. Eventually, the man at the front did not make me pay the difference which was nice, but my experience was already ruined. Food: The crab cakes were okay. I didn't expect them to come with 3. So it was a very nice serving. I did not like the Mac and cheese or the red beans and rice. My husband had a side of fried okra! So good! 10/10. Well seasoned! Delicious! Ambiance: it was extremely hot on the side of the restaurant where you place your order. We went and sat on the opposite side of the restaurant and it was so much better.

Friendly knowledgeable staff, swift service, quiet atmosphere yet well lit and open, tho dining area is small and may not serve well for a large party, is a great place to dine in and have a working lunch or call ahead to carry out! The food was so hot, I had so sit on my hand before digging in and it was well worth the wait!

Incredible seafood! The oyster po boy, crab cakes, and clam chowder were all perfect fresh, flavorful, and perfectly served. Amazing market and top notch service!"

I really can't believe I just made my way to Caplingers. I pass by there a million times and just never stopped. A coupon came in the mail and to be honest that is what prompted my visit. Upon pulling up, the parking lot is busy but I was able to find a spot right in front which is good. I went on a Friday around 3:30 and it was busy, seemed like people were coming out with to go orders. When I went inside, I had no idea there is actually seating inside. I don't know why I thought it was just to go orders. When you walk in there is a cabinet of fresh fish that you can buy, or you can have it prepared for you. I ordered a Grouper Sandwich, and a side of fries. Fries do NOT come with the sandwich so just beware of that. You order and then they will bring the food to your table when it is ready should you decide to dine in. The food was really good, I mean really good. It tasted very fresh and not greasy like some fish places. It was clean inside and the staff were very nice. Now that I know I can go and get seafood and not just any seafood but good seafood I'll be back for sure. Oh and pricing is reasonable, the Grouper sandwich I think was about $16.

Ask the Community - Caplinger's Fresh Catch

Are your greens cooked with any form of pork?

It does not contain pork. We use smoked turkey as the meat in them.

How come you guys abruptly stopped excepting the coupons that were from the charity books? The bogo

We actually accepted them for a full year when we had already requested to be removed from the book. After we realized that it was printed again for the secind year that is when we stopped which was last August.

    Are there any gluten-free options?

Most any of our grilled options are gluten free and we have some sides such as, green beans, corn, slaw and collard greens that should wok for you.

Where is the seafood from? It says fresh seafood delivered daily....from where? Thanks?

Our products come from all over the world. Much of it is domestic caught but here are a number other countries we bring in top quality seafood from New Zealand, Scotland, Mexico, Canada, Iceland, Vietnam, Greece, Spain and many more.

Is there another phone number? The one listed here automatically hangs up.

There is only one line and it gets very busy. If you can't get through you can order online by visiting our website at caplingersfreshcatch.com Sorry for the inconvenience.

Is this like a seafood boil place ? What are the options to choose from if so.

Not quite. Think of an actual fresh fish market. They have all types of fish that you can order cooked anyway or raw to prepare at home, shrimp, lobster rolls, frog legs, oysters, and much more.

    Is Caplinger's BYOB?

It is a very gray area on that question. I would have to say no but if we are not aware and you are outside then ignorance is bliss. Sorry to be vague but I have to be careful on those types of questions.

Now, to be entirely candid, the building itself looks a touch weathered at first glance but once you step inside, the décor is absolutely flawless. Being from Orange County, I have been on an absolute crusade to find genuinely authentic, coastal-caliber seafood since arriving here, and let me tell you, the search is officially over! The arrival was completely seamless, thanks to a sweet little dedicated parking lot, and the exterior of the venue is just as cute as a button. The moment I crossed the threshold, the lovely cashier greeted me with the warmest energy and elegantly walked me through the day's catch. What truly blew me away and frankly, brought a little tear to my eye was the sheer depth of knowledge and passion they share about their sourcing. They explained exactly where the fish came from and how it was caught with such beautiful, undivided commitment. That level of bespoke service is precisely what turns a first-time guest into a lifelong devotee. I opted for a Fish Taco prepared with a brilliantly unsalted catch, and it was an absolute revelation. The fish was incredibly soft, delicate, and practically melted in my mouthnot a hint of chewiness in sight. It was simply bursting with that clean, ocean-fresh flavor. A flawless, five-star experience across the board for the taste, the charm, and the beautiful soul of this place. I shall most certainly be making this a regular stop on my lunch rounds!

We ordered the lobster hoagie and hush puppies. Both were... fine. Not bad, but nothing that wowed us or justified the anticipation. The flavors were there in a basic sense, but it all felt a little underwhelming for a spot that's billing itself as a seafood destination. What really got me was the market side of things. The seafood on display just looked sad not fresh, not vibrant, not the kind of stuff that makes you want to throw something in a bag and take it home to cook. I fully understand we're landlocked in Indiana and truly fresh seafood is a challenge, but if that's your entire concept, the product has to be able to hold its own. Left feeling more disappointed than anything. I so wanted to love this place and will be rooting for them to level up but for now, this Florida girl will keep searching.

The lobster roll was soggy and honestly? Too much. I prefer a classic lobster roll - warm, lobster, bread that still has a little crunch to it (just the tiniest bit), butter - but not too much. This was soggy and the celery situation took away from the essence of a lobster roll for me. I've never liked the lobster salad rolls, and I did make sure there would be no mayo - but I think this was a bit much. Too much butter. Too many toppings. The flavor wasn't amazing. My dad really liked the perch. So much that he didn't let me try it. Lol but it looked good! The fried okra was solid. Kinda hard to mess that up, so no complaints there. Same thing with the fish tacos as the lobster roll. They're very busy. I like tasting my food - not piling the toppings on so things get lost. So, I scraped pretty much everything off. The fish was good! I got my mom the fried oysters. No complaints. Her meal came with two sides, so I got greens and Mac and cheese. I didnt try the Mac, but they said the greens were top tier. They had a nice flavor, but they're spicy - so avoid them if you can't deal with a lot of spice - probably red pepper. They threw in a crab cake for free and I thought that was really sweet of them. I didn't like the way it looked on the inside, so I only nibbled at it. Definitely not what this Maryland girl is used to... the winner is still Commisson Row on crab cakes in Indy so far. Anyway! Cute little tucked away spot, small parking lot, but spacious inside. Quite a few tables and chairs and fresh seafood in the cases. I'd go again and try some different things based on other reviews.

Main dining space has a combination of booths and tables of larger and smaller sizes. There is a fish tank behind the bar and maybe in the main room as well. Our table was between the bar and a small booth as well as near the entrance to the kitchen & bathrooms, so there was a decent bit of traffic through our congested area. Our server, Darrell, was AWESOME. He was personable, professional, and knowledgeable of the restaurant's history and menu. I used the information he shared to guide my order and was grateful for doing so. Wife ordered the special shrimp bowl ($21), which was packed with flavor. I chose the Ono ($32), which was a firm, meaty fish with a parmesan crust and chose the clam chowder and sweet potato fries for my sides. I really enjoyed the fish, which was huge and I brought half of it home. The chowder was excellent and the fries were crispy (uncommon for sweet potato fries) but not overdone. All of our food arrived promptly. They also provided a fresh loaf of sourdough bread to go with our meals, which was tasty. Would return based on service and flavor. Would probably prefer a booth to not be constantly walked around. Price point will probably prohibit our ability to return with any frequency.
