I consider myself very lucky to have been able to attend Cannstatter Wasen. I had booked a detour flight to Stuttgart to visit a couple of friends and was originally disappointed that I had missed out on Oktoberfest. Lo and behold, all my dedicated service to the beer gods had finally paid off! It turns out Stuttgart was wrapping up their festival just as I was arriving!
Instead of blocking traffic with massive hoards of people, you actually go through a tunnel underneath the road. The other end opens up to a carnival filled with your typical pop-up rides and food vendors.
It was at one of the food vendors I got to enjoy my first German curry wurst. As an excited tourist, I might be a little biased, but I think German carnival food is a notch above their American counterpart. The curry wurst was sliced and topped with a BBQ sauce that I usually don't like. The curry added to it definitely kicked up the flavor. What I didn't get initially was that you get the roll on the side, but with the amount of sauce they put, I definitely understand now. You can also get a variety of tortelloni and other pastas with cheese sauces or a kraut and pasta mixture.
Enough about the food, let's talk about the massive beer halls/tents. I walked in to almost the entire crowd standing on the benches yelling along to the live rock band. Everybody was drinking and dancing and just having a good time. Random, drunken, friendly people just coming up to my friends and me as if we were pals back in college. 1 liter steins of bier or radler flowing for only 10 euro. Oh, and waitresses come around to bring the beer instead of a huge mob gathering around a bar waiting to get drinks.
I definitely think I have a lot to bring back to the states. read more
