When I think of home, I can't help but get wistfully nostalgic for Candyland. Going downtown to shop (and later work) at Dayton's, eating at Forum's, catching a movie at the Skyway and to top it off: Stopping at Candyland for some caramel corn and some almond bark. I was last back in 2008, and I couldn't believe that nothing much had changed In this tiny, narrow store that held such amazing rich goodies with an amalgam of aromas that could make you swoon. This is one memory of my beloved home town that still exists, and it makes me happy to see that it is as beloved today as it was 30 years ago. (How I wish Dayton's was still around!) Browsing in Downtown Minneapolis this is definitely a destination stop for anyone who's visiting or simply passing through the city. At first the popcorn in the window immediately caught my attention and to my surprise there was more then just your average cheese popcorn and your everyday candy. The gentleman who helped me out was very informative and descriptive with the candy selection I made along with sampling a few pieces. Interestingly enough leaving with more then what was anticipated, I was highly satisfied with the presentation of the establishment, friendly employees and display of sweets. The end result of my purchase was scrumptious, the Chicago Blend popcorn was very appetizing and the quality of their chocolate is phenomenal. Very good pricing for what you received, any products made fresh in the shop went a little up in value but worth every cent. Let your inner fat-self out and go bonkers in here! It's better than Disney World "where you can be a kid again" because at least this place doesn't charge you an arm and a leg so you can feel sick and throw up on a dirty sidewalk. I have literally reached my weekly intake of sugar in just one visit to this wonderful place, and really the only thing I can even compare this too would be Willy Wonka's chocolate factory minus about 400 Oompa Loompa's. I love the fact that you can get all of your favorite little candies all packaged together all in one place! It's so different than when I am craving gummies and go down to Billy and Marty's and have to buy a bag of the hard generic ones that leave me feeling kind of blech. If it's possible, the candy here tastes "fresh." A serious step up for all of the sugar loving Minneapolins... but a serious step down for those that battle the bulge! read more

I love this place. Every time we go downtown we try to stop here to pick up goodies. The cheese corn is outstanding, the best I have ever had. The cheese corn is great on its own or as part of the Chicago Mix. Also for some reason their Sour Cherry Balls at Candyland are better than I have found elsewhere. My wife loves their toffee popcorn, but they don't always have it. I recently attended a conference at the Radisson next door that set us loose on our own for a break around lunchtime. I had lots of options for lunch, but I could not resist stopping in Candyland for a lunch of cheese corn, sour cherry balls, and an Icee. Even though I spilled some of the Icee on my shirt and ended up with a faint red stain the rest of the day at the conference, I could not have been happier with my lunch choice. read more

Who doesn't like an old fashioned candy store? I've seen a gal in this place early in the mornings making something delightfully chocolate. Also, if you work nearby and need a snack for a meeting, you can get a bag of their mixed popcorn for a decent price. If you are looking for a place to get a treat, this is a good start. The smells that draw you into this place will have you drooling! Caramel corn, fudge and sweets are the best you'll find! Popcorn is popped in a huge copper kettle and real butter and sugar are used to make the caramel. Staff is friendly and fast! read more

Aesthetically, I love this place. It reminds me of the candy stores I knew as a child. My husband and I were downtown one night and as we passed by I realized I needed licorice string for a cookie project, and I haven't been able to find it anywhere. I didn't see any on display, but the clerk produced yards of it when I asked. Huge selection of sweets. The reason for my three star rating is based on some chocolates I purchased. They were simply...okay. Possibly they just weren't terribly fresh, I have no idea what the shelf life is on candy. Compared to Heggy's in my hometown that I've also reviewed here...no contest. "You Can't Miss With the Chicago Mix!" Just as it is NOT alright to like one child better than the other, it's not possible to prefer one of the Candyland stores to the other: they're different and I love them both the same! Candyland in Minneapolis is located in the heart of downtown, right outside of the Macy's shoe department. There is so much to choose from-popcorn, hard candy, fudge, caramel apples, traditional treats and fun gum ball machines. My mother visits from Michigan and loves the Chicago Mix popcorn. If you've never had it, the Chicago Mix is a delicious blend of plain, carmel and cheese popcorn--all freshly popped and bagged for your enjoyment. If you decide that you love it, and you don't live in the area, not to worry--you can purchase a tin or bring on back to someone back home. The fudge is also one of my very favorites, and I see many customers come in for their favorite roasted nuts. The St. Paul store is also near Macy's---but is more importantly located a stone's throw from the Minnesota Children's Museum. A great treat for you to top off a great visit to the Children's Museum with!! This store is a little smaller than the Minneapolis location, but every bit as friendly and has the same selection. read more

This place looks, feels and smells like an old-timey candy store in a Norman Rockwell painting. The aroma of freshly made, buttery caramel popcorn was nearly irresistible. I barely managed to resist it in favor of an 84-cent chocolate covered pretzel. It was incredible. No waxy, cheap chocolate here. In fact, their entire chocolate assortment looked fabulous - turtles, truffles, barks, chocolate-covered coffee beans/raisins/peanuts. You can also get a wide variety of roasted nuts and candies. My favorite were the sweet tart hard candies shaped like Legos in a variety of shapes and colors. (They fit together like actual Legos, too.) And after you load up on candy, they also sell cute tins to package it all up in. read more

You really can't escape the smell of Candyland when you are nearby. It is a stroke of evil genius! It may be the popcorn smell that lures you to the doorway, but the bins and bins of colorful candy are such a joy once you get there. This is my go-to for cinnamon bears, but I always seem to get tempted by another goodie (or two!). I will give big props to the popcorn for being the closest to Chicago's as I have found. I was so excited to see Candyland across the street from the hotel I was staying at! I love candy!! I was so excited, that I forgot my wallet in the store. I didn't notice till the next morning which was Easter Sunday and the store was closed. Trisha and the staff at Candyland are absolutely WONDERFUL!! My wallet had cash, credit/debit cards and drivers license and was mailed back to me safely and quickly. I am so thankful to them! The best and freshest popcorn mixes in town! I own a business and occasionally stop in and get a bag of goodies for my team. They love it! This week one of our customers brought us the biggest bag of Chicago Mix I've ever seen. The popcorn is soooo good; it melts in your mouth. You can definitely taste the difference between a fresh bag from Candyland and the popcorn mixes that come in the round tins for Christmas. This place is every chubby kid's fantasy! Seriously, as a child I used to dream of living in a real-life version of the Candy Land board game and this place would have fulfilled this dream. I love that I can buy a small bag of a dozen different types of candy (Swedish Fish and Sour Patch kids are my favorite), as well as some delicious popcorn, nuts, and chocolates. Everything is always fresh and the service rocks. I often wonder how the staff are able to add everything in their heads with ease...but that thought quickly passes as I dig into my first bag of Sour Patch Kids or Toffee Chocolate Almonds...yum! read more

The fact that you can smell the carmel-chocolaty-ooey-gooey-goodness of Candlyland from a block away is worth 5 stars in itself. When I was a little girl my dad would bring me home a popcorn ball or gummy worms or a piece of chocolate from Candyland if he had a work meeting downtown. We visited this weekend after a Twins game, the staff was very helpful but the candy was so old and stale the Jujubees were inedible. The pretzel stick was tasty but completely stale as well and pricy for the quality. read more

Service was quick and friendly, and the location is convenient to my company's downtown Minneapolis office and our preferred hotel. I just love going to Macy's, buying something super discounted (getting the parking validation) and going to Candyland. It's not the best candy store of all time; however, the buttered popcorn and milk chocolate peanut butter cups are to die for. I used to do this weekly bc the two items are so good. I have gone there many times-more so when I worked downtown. The last time I purchased popcorn, some candy, and a few chocolates, and a popcorn ball. The popcorn and chocolates were really good. The pop corn ball was very old and gross, and the ju ju bees I bought for my daughter were so old they weren't edible. I would recommend sticking with the fresh stuff. read more
