And to any of my non-Christian brethren, they may have an agenda, but I think it skews far more to the "we wanna help people/have inclusive events" than the "convert people" side. Just saying. Check the website for the most up-to-date details as each semester may offer slightly different programs or hours. As of now, though, they are commonly known for: Veggie Lunch! 11-1pm (like i say, hours change, you should check the site), a free lunch (well, sorta, they accept donations) and you can talk to the random veggie-heads/ECM crew. probably going to meet someone who just got back from tanzania, someone leaving tomorrow for ecuador and someone who knows how to build a canoe with a sleeping bag and a tree branch. Human Sexuality Class offered by former prof. Dennis Dailey. The controversial Dailey is still going strong just off campus. This class is offered on a sliding scale, like most things ECM puts on. Alternative Breaks and Eco-Justice Field Trips-- for students who want to do something beside Cabo over the holiday A $5 International cooking class on Mondays?! (It's true. They just taught Irish food.) Also the current home of Solidarity's library--- (yeah? remember them? Anarchists and Christians!? I'm tellin' ya..)

There are tons of happenings here, everything from the young feminists weekly meeting to a weekly forum about social justice issues. First Christian Church is an open, down-to-earth, medium-sized, non-denominational church with a great staff and committed congregation. FCC has two services: traditional and contemporary at 9am and 11am, respectively, every Sunday. The first service has a robed choir that sings the more traditional hymns, while the second service has a full band that plays the more contemporary music you may hear on the radio. I attend the second service. The church has a solid youth group that meets Wednesday evenings, and even has daycare and bible study classes during the service for the little ones. FCC has various opportunities and activities for anyone wanting to serve, wanting to learn more about who God is, or wanting to participate in other areas of interest (such as grief counseling). FCC also has ties with the LINK community soup kitchen that serves meals four days a week, as well as with the Family Promise organization that helps homeless families get back on their feet. I have attended First Christian Church for three-and-a-half years now. Pastor David Rivers (note: who is NOT there any more) makes obsolete biblical concepts relevant to everyday life and even explains the historical background and translation of words from the current text. He has a great sense of humor and I have never left a service bored out of my mind. When I moved to Kansas City a few years ago from Lawrence, I attempted to look for a church I can grow with spiritually and gain wisdom to better serve God, and unfortunately after a couple weeks I was not able to find one that matched what I sought. Thus, I still commute all the way from Kansas City, because the church is THAT good! But don't take my word for it; check it out yourself!

I've attended a lot of churches throughout my life and this one is one that I visited when I first moved to the Lawrence area. They were the first church that I visited. The people were very nice and friendly however me growing up in the church of God in Christ, I guess I'm just used to a certain liveliness in the church. Choirs, worship and praise that usually leads to shouting and dancing before the Lord. Through the years I've come to learn that a lot of churches have their own way of addressing worship and praise. Some are very private about it while others are very open. So I don't judge that, nor do I question that. This church is located in a wonderful spot it faces Massachusetts which is a very popular roadway it is a tourist road and highly traveled. The signage on the building is a little disappointing because you can barely see it as you drive by because the wording is very small. The church is very clean and it's a decorated church and has a huge capacity very spacious. Their pulpit has a lot of room for a praise and worship team but also a choir if they have one and as far as I know they don't have one, just a praise and worship team. They are praise and worship team is a mixed cultural group. You have the young worshiping with the old, some are singers, others are guitarist and drummer's. What I love most about their praise and worship is that they do have a screen that puts the words of the music on it so that you can follow along. I have been to churches that you had to be quiet because you never heard the song and because there were no words you couldn't sing. The pastor Leo Barber sr, is a elderly man I'm assuming in his 80s but you wouldn't know it when you hear him preach. He preaches the word Of God and he seems very concerned about the people who attend. I was greeted very friendly the only thing that shocked me was that they prayed over the offering but they didn't take up any. This may be due to Covid, but I did leave my tithes with the church and they did take it. One thing that did concern me, and it may just be that due to Covid a lot of members haven't been attending church like they usually do, but I didn't see any children in this church and every church i have attended from the time I was a little girl has always had kids in it so it was just kind of strange to be there and see all these adults And see no kids. But for the most part if you're looking for a church that will make you feel at home make you feel welcome, I do recommend stopping into this church but leave your expectations at the door and just let God meet you and show you how much he loves you. Once you do that you get over what you expected, and you accept what you receive, and by that alone, you won't be disappointed.

They speak straight from the bible. Pastor is wiling to answer all questions with proof of the word and if he doesn't have the answer he will do his best to find it in the word of God and come back and share his findings. Our children love it as well! Sundays are our best days.
